Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rugaard and Til Schweiger lead the international cast of “Desperate Journey,” a newly-announced thriller set in the burlesque world of 1940s Paris.

The film — which has now wrapped production — comes from Emblem Pictures, and was written by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Radford (best known for directing 1994 global sensation “Il Postino”) and directed by Emmy winner Annabel Jankel (“Tell It to the Bees”).

Produced by Warren Derosa and Zsófia Kende, “Desperate Journey” is based on the true story of Freddie Knoller (played by Tønnesen), a young man forced to flee Vienna as Nazi hysteria takes hold. Knoller’s captivating story has been widely recognized around the world and he was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth.

Joe Cornish (writer and director) started his career, doing silly skits with Star Wars figures, back when that was cutting-edge comedy. He went on to make Attack the Block, the interesting sci-fi action film, about an inner-city housing estate being attacked by extra-terrestrial monsters. It was dripping with both alien blood and social commentary.

Apple TV+ and Disney+ were the major gainers in the U.K. subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) market, a survey from Barb, the country’s television audience measurement currency, has found. Barb’s establishment survey for the first quarter of the year reports that the number of U.K. households with access to a streaming service reached 19.57 million U.K. homes (68.5 of households), in the first quarter of the year, an increase of almost 500,000 homes since the fourth quarter of 2021. Of these, 1.57 million homes had access to Apple TV+, up 27 from 1.24 million the previous quarter and 6.53 million homes had access to Disney+, a quarterly increase of 19 from 5.49 million in Q4 2021.

Joe Cornish’s sophomore feature The Kid Who Would Be King opens in UK cinemas this weekend, with Warner Bros’ sequel The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part currently holding the number one spot.

Cornish previously directed 2011 inner city sci-fi Attack The Block starring Screen Star of Tomorrow 2011 John Boyega. The film opened to £1.1m in May 2011 with a £3,221 screen average, going on to hit £2.5m in the UK.

Based on the story of the sword in the stone, The Kid Who Would Be King marks the first directorial endeavour for Attack the Block helmer Joe Cornish. To celebrate its release, we sat down with the filmmaker himself, as well as all of the leading cast-members form this adventurous British production.

We met the four leading kids – such as Louis Ashbourne Serkis, , as well as Merlin himself, Angus Imrie, and the wonderful Rebecca Ferguson, who plays the film’s primary antagonist Morgana.

Synopsis

Old-school magic meets the modern world when young Alex stumbles upon the mythical sword Excalibur. He soon unites his friends and enemies, and they become knights who join forces with the legendary wizard Merlin. Together, they must save mankind from the wicked enchantress Morgana and her army of supernatural warriors.

The Kid Who Would Be King is released on February 15th.

In a weekend dominated by holdovers, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” will likely top the box office again in its second frame with an estimated $16 million.

The third part in a trilogy that includes “Unbreakable” and “Split” has earned $59 million domestically and nearly $54 million internationally since its debut despite generally unfavorable reviews. If estimates hold, its weekend two haul would mark a 60% decline from its $40 million debut.

One of two wide releases for the weekend, “The Kid Who Would Be King” is opening at 3,521 North American sites and drew $1.7 million on Friday. It should take in about $6.8 million through Sunday. The fantasy film hails from “Attack the Block” director Joe Cornish, who also wrote the script.

Chicago – The marketing of this film keeps mentioning the 1980s cult film ‘The Goonies,’ but this British based “school mates” adventure is rooted more in King Arthur and “The Sword in the Stone.” A boy’s grand adventure plays out with themes of what is at stake in a delightful “The Kid Who Would Be King.”

Rating: 3.5/5.0

The film is well written, well cast and executed with heart and excitement. It’s a pity that the inevitable overindulgence in computer generated images had to be present, but for once it was balanced with some decent storytelling and “analog” wizardry. It’s like “The Goonies” only in the sense that it’s a kid’s quest, with nary an adult involved. But the mythology associated with the quest is pure British, expanding upon the King Arthur legend and lessening the Disney effect by creating its own tale of kings and knights.

The second weekend of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” will handily repeat as the winner of a mild North American weekend box office with about $16 million at 3,844 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

Despite mostly negative reviews, “Glass” has racked up $54 million in its first week. It’s a sequel to both “Unbreakable” and “Split” with Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and James McAvoy reprising their roles in the offbeat thriller.

The third weekend of the Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston dramedy “The Upside” is projected to lead the rest of the pack with about $10 million, followed by the opening of Fox’s fantasy-comedy “The Kid Who Would Be King” in the $8 million to $9 million range at 3,521 locations. “The Kid” stars Louis Ashbourne Serkis (son of Andy Serkis) as an adolescent who finds King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. This week the multiplex presents another retelling of a familiar, romantic legend. You may be wondering whether we’re going to endure another revival of Robin Hood since the stench of that abomination from two months ago has finally cleared from theatres (last week it garnered several well-earned Razzie nominations). No we’re not going to that exact time frame, for this new film starts a bit before, then jumps (leaps and bounds really) to the present day. Like many directorial debuts, Attack the Block was an ideal venture for writer-director Joe Cornish to exercise his pet obsessions. The cult-film-in-the-making was the product of Cornish’s longstanding cinephilia, inspired by a childhood filled with horror films and Fangoria magazines, and parodic, deconstructive impulses honed on his Channel 4 sketch series co-hosted with his comedy partner Adam Buxton. Attack the Block was generally acclaimed for its genre-bending/mixing and sharp humor, but retrospectively, its sociopolitical filter sets it apart from its contemporaries. Cornish’s not-so-subtle political subtext lends his debut some much-needed weight, especially its final scene: a whole neighborhood cheering for a black teen who’s unlawfully arrested for saving mankind. Strip away the monster-movie elements and Attack the Block falls squarely into the social realism playbook; “marginalized teens living in a council estate forced to defend a neighborhood that rejects them as hoodlums” could conceivably be the...

Joe Cornish’s long-awaited and largely delightful follow-up to “Attack the Block” is a unicorn of a children’s fantasy movie: It’s imaginative, it’s heartfelt, and it never feels like it’s trying to sell you anything more than a measure of hope for the future. Cornish may bite off a bit more than he can chew by trying to reinvent Arthurian legend as an epic, ultra-contemporary adventure for the kids of Brexit-era Britain, but the guy hasn’t been able to direct anything in more than eight years, so it’s hard to fault him for an excess of pent-up ambition (especially not when the least effective parts of his movie involve a crazed Patrick Stewart running around in a Led Zeppelin t-shirt).

I am super excited for The Kid Who Would Be King. I am a huge fan of Attack the Block, so I can’t wait to see what Joe Cornish has pulled out of his hat this time, and the previews have been giving me a 90s kids movie vibe, which is pretty much the highest praise I could give a kids movie. I am also a sucker for any retelling of the Arthurian legend (I didn’t even hate that terrible Guy Ritchie version a couple years ago). So basically, Joe Cornish + 90s-vibe kids movie + King Arthur = I’m in. Plus, it is too cold to go to the park and this will keep my kid entertained for a couple of hours on a Saturday.

Director Joe Cornish’s new film The Kid Who Would Be King looks like it’s going to be a super fun fantasy adventure film, and we’ve got a great new trailer to share with you today filled with some cool footage.

I really like the tone and vibe of this film and the fact that it’s filled with extremely fun imagination, adventure, action. The movie comes from the same director who previously brought us Attack The Block, so if you enjoyed that, there’s a good chance that you’ll enjoy this movie.

After retrieving the sacred weapon, Alex soon learns that he is destined to become the hero who will defeat the medieval villain Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) and prevent her plan to take over the world.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Disney didn’t just release a “live-action” remake of its 1967 “The Jungle Book” two years ago. In a world without such competition, “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” might have seemed like a good idea: a darker, decidedly non-Disney approach to Rudyard Kipling’s collection of stories about a boy raised by wild animals deep in the Indian forest. It may even have excited some people to know that performance-capture prodigy Andy Serkis was tackling the project as his directorial debut — one complicated enough that his second feature, “Breathe,” actually beat it to screens.

But Disney did release “The Jungle Book,” and that movie was a big, big hit, followed by the seemingly inevitable announcement of a sequel. Andy Serkis, king of the performance capture kingdom, goes up against Disney’s The Jungle Book with his adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic story Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Serkis directs the new film with the voices of Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Freida Pinto, Naomie Harris, Peter Muilan, Jack Reynor, Eddie Marsan, Tom Hollander and Matthew Rhys.

Those attending the special screening of the film at the Curzon Mayfair in London this evening along with Serkis were the boy wonder himself Rohan Chand, Eddie Marsan, Naomie Harris, Louis Ashbourne Serkis, composer Nitin Sawhney and producer Jonathan Cavendish. We spoke to them about their new take on Kipling’s much loved tale.

The film arrives on Netflix on the 7th of December, 2018. Scott Davis and David Sztypuljak were on the red carpet and conducted these interviews.

Andy Serkis has given life to many unreal and unnatural characters over the course of his career. But the man behind the motion-captured face of Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” series and Caesar in various “Planet of the Apes” films may have finally met his technical match. In “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” his adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved story collection “The Jungle Book,” director and co-star Serkis throws in too many new elements and, in the process, derails the plot’s familiarity and some of its charms.

As in many other versions of Kipling’s tale, Mowgli (Rohan Chand, “Bad Words”) is an orphaned boy, adopted and raised by a pack of wolves in an Indian jungle. As he grows up, Mowgli is trained by cockney-accented bear Baloo (voiced by Serkis) and pragmatic panther Bagheera (Christian Bale) to fit in among the wolves and to learn to survive.

After arriving on the scene back in 2011 with his mightly impressive directorial debut Attack the Block (along with a writing credit on The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), it’s been a long wait to see what Joe Cornish would do next. He was attached to a number of projects and even rumored for some high-profile gigs such as Die Hard and Star Trek films. Well, he’s now finally back with The Kid Who Would Be King.

Founded by Studio Ghibli veterans Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura and employing the majority of the animators from Studio Ghibli when it announced it was ceasing feature production, Studio Ponoc’s first feature is Mary and The Witch’s Flower featuring the same lush and evocative animation Studio Ghibli was so legendary for, carrying the torch forward into another generation.

Like some of the favourite Studio Ghibli films, Mary is based on an English Children’s novel – The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart, and tells a story of a young girl called Mary who finds a mysterious flower that can give her the power to become a witch, transporting her to a school for witchcraft and wizardry that harbours a dark secret.
