A native of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, he went to the UK to pursue a comedy career and ended up joining the British Royal Marines. He lost his right leg below the knee in Afghanistan in 2011. In 2013, he was the face of the Royal British Legion's poppy campaign.
The reality is that braving a smile and talking about it [combat trauma] is really the best way to treat it ... because then you end up like me; you just end up trying to make as many jokes about it and you wear your injuries like armour and you get on with it.
