In a nutshell, that was the just completed ceremony of the Games of the Xxxiii Olympiad.

It was Tom Cruise leaping off the rim of the Stade de France to take the Olympic flag from LA Mayor Karen Bass and Simone Biles. As the guitar riffs of H.E.R. filled the air, Cruise then exited on a motorbike to deliver the flag to a sunny West Coast. It was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish and Olympic fixture Snoop Dogg getting into the pre-recorded groove down in Long Beach.

It wasn’t telling of the full scope of Los Angeles and no mention was made of Snoop’s supposed flight from Paris to LA, but it was pure Hollywood.

It was over the top and cliche filled – – as if anything less would have sufficed.

Like the Opening Ceremony, the Closing Ceremony has a lineup of celebrities set to perform and a pair of athletes to serve as flagbearers for the United States in the Parade of Athletes. Sporting events that will take place on Sunday include the women’s modern pentathlon, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s water polo, women’s weightlifting, wrestling, cycling and the women’s marathon.

The selection of the Grammy- and Oscar-winning R&b singer was announced during last night’s NBC coverage of the games when special correspondent and Olympics enthusiast Snoop Dogg dropped the news. “Can I announce who’s gonna be…? Well, I’m a fan of H.E.R., and I would love for H.E.R. to perform the national anthem.” He then confirmed that H.E.R. will be performing the anthem.

The announcement by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (Usopc) comes amid growing excitement around Sunday’s ceremony, which will see the city of Paris hand over the summer games baton to L.A., host city in 2028.

A raft of Hollywood stars is expected to participate in this segment of the ceremony, led by Tom Cruise, who is believed to have pre-recorded material in Paris this spring and is also rumored to be preparing a skydiving stunt into the Stade de France venue.
