Space was held by Cynthia Erivo while accepting Out’s Out100 Icon Award on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The “Wicked” star paid homage to her and Ariana Grande’s viral “holding space” interview with the magazine’s Tracy E. Gilchrist.
“According to queer media, I have been all over your social media,” Erivo said to the crowd, adding, “I don’t want you to grow too tired of me. There’s a [‘Wicked’] part two on the way, and we really need to hold space for that and feel the power in that.”
Before leaving the stage, as her “Defying Gravity” from the “Wicked” soundtrack boomed through the speakers, Erivo grabbed the mic and sang along for a snippet. You can watch that here.
Erivo then reunited with Gilchrist to watch drag queen Pattie Gonia’s lip sync performance of – what else? – “Defying Gravity.”

On Friday night, amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, hosted its first-ever gala in Las Vegas — with the hopes that in the city where winning big is the goal, the nonprofit would hit the jackpot in fundraising for AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education and advocacy.
Held during Formula 1 race weekend in the garden of the Wynn Las Vegas, the night was made possible by Paramount Global, Roberto Cavalli, 101 Studios, the Wynn Las Vegas, Sazerac and Rm Sotheby’s. AmfAR raised over $3 million at the event, and the foundation will receive close to $11 million from Rm Sotheby’s in a live auction of rare luxury cars. Sylvester Stallone and wife Jennifer were the evening’s big honorees, receiving amfAR’s Award of Inspiration.
Jay Leno kept his hosting duties after news broke that he fell down a large hill over the weekend, leaving him with an eye patch and a large bruise.

[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of English Teacher.]
In the second episode of FX’s English Teacher, Stephanie Koenig’s Gwen Sanders — a peppy history teacher with perhaps too much faith in her students — takes it upon herself to teach the school’s cheerleading team self defense.
Koenig, who also wrote the episode, got the idea from TikTok. She recalls one creator in particular who provides intricately detailed escape how-tos, should one ever find herself being strangled with a seatbelt in the backseat of a car.
“She’s like, ‘One! Two! Fingers up, one thumb out,'” Koenig tells The Hollywood Reporter as she reenacts the comically detailed instructions. “Move them here, wrap around and twist. Now you’ve got that — you can turn your head left!”
Koenig starts giggling as she marvels at the dissonance between the woman’s good nature in posting the video and the ridiculous complexity of achieving the escape. Koenig’s character,...

The English language is a powerful tool. To wit, the phrase “high school” can evoke a myriad of responses depending upon who reads them. For actual young adults, it’s the recognition pressures — social, societal, educational — of their current reality. For the teachers, it’s an understanding they’re helping to shape young minds at a critical stage. For parents, it’s a desire to have some level of control and influence before their kids go off to define themselves. For those in their 30s, it’s a time from long ago that we’re likely not keen to return to or think about in any capacity. In short, it’s a rich text full of contradictions to explore in a television show.

Last year, United Talent Agency was one of the first agencies in Hollywood to achieve the Human Rights Campaign Equality 100 award as leaders in the LGBTQ workspace inclusion. Not only is it a positive environment for its queer agents, but those agents also have the autonomy in who they want to represent. “We’ve built a really great business in representing overall LGBTQ+ talent, specifically within that niche, representation for drag artists,” said agent Pranav Mandavia.
Mandavia recalled when the company signed its first drag artist a few years ago. “There were no phone calls from the leader saying, ‘Why did you sign this person? What’s the business proposition?’” Rather, the response was accepting that the agents were passionate and were told “build a business.”
Since then, UTA has become a trailblazing leader in representing drag artists including Monét X Change, Violet Chachki, Bob the Drag Queen, Trixie Mattel,...

Film/TV actor and longtime star of the online queer comedy world Brian Jordan Alvarez stands accused of serious misbehavior by a former collaborator ahead of the release of his FX comedy series English Teacher.
Alvarez, who played recurring roles in TV shows such as Jane the Virgin, Will & Grace and Get Shorty, rose to the top of the internet humor A-list in 2016 after creating, writing, directing and starring in the critically acclaimed five-part web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallor. On Alvarez’ absurdist queer comedy series, actor Jon Ebeling played Billy, one of the six central characters in Caleb Gallo. On Wednesday, just weeks before FX will debut Alvarez’ biggest project to date as his self-created, self-starred education comedy series English Teacher eyes a two-part premiere on September 2nd, Ebeling has come forward with unsettling allegations against his former director and co-star in an Instagram...

There was a lot of buzz that John Mulaney was expected to gatecrash the late-night Emmy race but it was not to be.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel Live! will fight it out in the Outstanding Talk Series category.
These four competed last year alongside The Problem with Jon Stewart, although the host of the latter is now one of the hosts of The Daily Show after his Apple series was canceled.
John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA did not make the cut.
This comes after the category nabbed four nomination spots in June, a surprise to many in the late-night world after 14 shows were submitted. Last year, there were five nominations.
Hot Ones, the online chicken talk show hosted by Sean Evans, was one of the other outside bets for a nomination. The show, which was created by Chris Schonberger,...

In the making since 2019, Page Hurwitz’s new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, taps a throng of queer notables — from Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell and Lily Tomlin to Joel Kim Booster, Fortune Feimster and Bob the Drag Queen — to show how LGBTQ funny people have left their mark and challenged others’ perceptions for more than a century.
“None of these comedians set out to change the world. They set out to make people laugh,” Hurwitz said at the film’s Tribeca Festival premiere ahead of its June 18 streaming debut. “And along the way, they did change the culture and, I think, they changed the world.”
Featuring an intergenerational and diverse cast, the documentary — set against the backdrop of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration show in 2022 — unpacks what has fueled the cycle of progress and regression that has surrounded the queer comedy community for decades.

This means that the category has only lost one nomination slot from last year, as opposed to two, which was the worry before voting opened.
Last year, The Daily Show, then hosted by Trevor Noah, won the Talk Emmy, beating out Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Problem with Jon Stewart.
Emmy rules suggest that because there were 14 submissions, this is divided by four and rounded up so 3.5 turns into four nominations. Had there been one fewer submission, it would have only been three.

Since 2011, YouTube has been one of Coachella‘s biggest hype guys. Every time the annual desert festival rolls around, YouTube–as Coachella’s exclusive streaming partner through at least 2026–fills its social channels with livestreams of headliner acts, behind-the-scenes interviews with artists, and peeks at what attending content creators are up to.
This year, much of that content was made by one man and his team.
Hunter Ellenbarger was Creative Lead for YouTube’s Instagram account from 2018 to 2022, and in that time grew the account to more than 15 million followers. When he left YouTube in 2022, it was to launch his own creative studio and consultancy, Star Quality–and in April, he and Star Quality’s team of designers, producers, and editors were responsible for 100+ pieces of YouTube x Coachella promotional content.
“I got to come up with the concept and direct the talent,” Ellenbarger tells Tubefilter. “I worked with a...

For the fourth year in a row, the Ambie Awards celebrated the brightest creators in the world of podcasting. On March 26, drag queen Trixie Mattel hosted a lively ceremony that honored the best audio shows across 27 categories.
The Ambies are overseen and voted on by the Podcast Academy, a group that was established just a few months before the inaugural Ambies in 2020. The show has added a handful of new categories since then and has kept pace with a podcasting industry that has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. “You all look so gorgeous which is why you excel in a medium where no one can see you,” said Mattel, a former Streamy Awards co-host, at the start of the 2024 Ambies.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Trixie Mattel recaps the latest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 alongside a guest host. Following Friday’s eighth episode, reigning champion and Mother of season 15 Sasha Colby makes her recap debut to break down this season’s “Snatch Game” performances. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.
