Bit by the "entertainment bug" as a small child growing up, Ms. Sugar used to always practice mimicking sounds from music artists that her mother used to have in daily rotation on the family's record player such as, award-winning gospel recording group The Clark Sisters, iconic singer Whitney Houston, vocal powerhouse Pattie LaBelle, legendary gospel recording artist Reverend Rance Allen, husband and wife duo Ashford and Simpson, famed singer Luther Vandross, gospel recording divas Vanessa Bell-Armstrong and Tramaine Hawkins, R&B crooner Freddie Jackson, and more. Gaining enough confidence to share her voice with the world, she sang in her first school production at the age of seven.
Ms. Sugar grew up in a Christian household so, attending church every Sunday was a must. It was there that she perfected her singing, leading songs in her church's choir. She later learned to play the alto saxophone while attending junior high - a skill that she used to audition for and ultimately get accepted in to her high school marching band. Upon entering senior high school, she also enrolled in Drama class. Ms. Sugar continued to sing throughout her school years and during the summer of sophomore year in high school she was accepted into the Coconut Grove Playhouse "Young Actors Workshop" and performed on the very stage that legendary Hollywood A-Listers such as Bea Arthur, Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, and Liza Minnelli once did.
While still in high school Ms. Sugar competed in the NAACP's Act-So competition for both Drama and Vocal Performance, winning 2nd Runner-up in Drama. Ms. Sugar continued to sing solos at numerous events and in several singing groups including Joy, a gospel ensemble group founded by local radio personality Lydia Goodin, and Christian Image, a small girl group founded by best friend and author Lakeisha Conyers-Stevenson. Christian Image consisted of six teenage girls - all of whom were best friends. Ms. Sugar has sang background for such notable music recording artists as Case, Bobby Valentino, Dorothy Norwood, Reverend Milton Biggham, Suai, Kindred the Family Soul, Rick Astley and more. She appeared on BET's "Bobby Jones Gospel" during her stint of singing with national recording choir Marc Cooper & Friends. Ms. Sugar was also a member of Miami Mass Choir.
Ms. Sugar worked in corporate America for a number of years as a Sales Associate for telecommunications giant Bellsouth. Having the skill to both listen and identify the needs of her customers and the natural gift of persuasion, she quickly became one the company's top sales performers. To Ms. Sugar making what was [then] considered great money and receiving commendations was not as fulfilling as it seemed. The entertainment world kept calling her name. And, it wasn't long before she answered its call. At the insistence of her extremely supportive mother she made the decision to do that which she had a passion for. Hearing her mother's words ring loud in her ear, "you can profit from your passion," has made Ms. Sugar a firm believer ever since. She left her corporate job shortly thereafter.
