2024 hasn’t been that great of a year for Prime Video, as the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power failed to make up for its abysmal first season and continued its streak of huge disappointment. That doesn’t mean there were no great shows on Prime Video this year. So, we compiled a list comprising the 10 best original prime video shows of 2024.

Broadway Rallies For Kamala, a special livestream event on Monday, October 14, to support the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz presidential ticket, will feature performances and appearances by a raft of Broadway and Hollywood talent including Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Porter, J. Harrison Ghee and Kelli O’Hara.

The event, to take place at 7:30 p.m. Et in front of an invited audience in New York City and livestreamed nationally for free via BroadwayWorld.com, will be paired with a daytime virtual “Kamala Dial-A-Thon” phone bank staffed by volunteers alongside Broadway and Hollywood talent, in partnership with Swifties for Kamala, Women for Harris, White Dudes for Harris, Musicians for Harris, Queers for Kamala and others.

Organized by Broadway For Harris and produced by James Wesley Jackson, Seth Rudetsky, Bruce Cohen, Robb Nanus and Jeff Metzler, the Broadway Rallies evening event will be directed by Schele Williams with music direction by Rudetsky, the co-creator and co-host with Wesley Jackson of Stars in the House. The evening will include musical performances and “energizing calls-to-action” by celebrities, Broadway leaders and other surrogates.

In addition to the above-named talent, the roster so far also includes Ana Gasteyer, Anne Hathaway, Arielle Jacobs, Chasten Buttigieg, Erika Henningsen, Isabelle McCalla, Judy Kuhn, Lilli Cooper, Rosie Perez, Shaina Taub and Wilson Cruz.

Broadway for Harris is a volunteer, grassroots coalition of industry professionals and theater enthusiasts united to elect Harris, Walz and down-ballot Democratic candidates this November. Its mission is to “increase voter participation in key swing districts, produce fundraising events featuring the talents of the Broadway community and work together toward a brighter, more hopeful, more equitable future for the country under the historic leadership of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.”

With an initial organizing committee of more than 80 industry leaders, including current and former Broadway performers, producers, writers, musicians, directors, choreographers, marketing specialists, artists, stage managers, crew and other professionals from within the Broadway community, Broadway for Harris works to activate the theater community and fans for volunteer activities including phone banking, canvassing, social media outreach and special fundraising events.

To date, Broadway for Harris has rallied hundreds of volunteers and made more than 150,000 calls and knocked on more than 11,000 doors in Pennsylvania swing districts.

Additional organizing events will be announced in the coming weeks.

Broadway is raising its curtains for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Broadway Rallies for Kamala will take place in New York City on Oct. 14 and features stars of the stage and screen.

The event will include appearances and performances by Whoopi Goldberg, Anne Hathaway, Kelli O’Hara, Kristin Chenoweth, Ana Gasteyer, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, Wilson Cruz, Arielle Jacobs, Erika Henningsen, Isabelle McCalla, J. Harrison Ghee, Judy Kuhn, Lilli Cooper, Rosie Perez and Shaina Taub.

“Kamala Harris couldn’t have come to a better place than Broadway,” Goldberg told Variety on Wednesday morning. “The people of Broadway are a microcosm of every slice of life in America — so we get who you are and where you need to be.”

The program will take place before a live audience and will be streamed via Broadway World at 7:30 p.m. Et.

The former co-stars are set to lead the upcoming series, which will see Fey teaming up with longtime collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield to write the comedy. The film — which was written and directed by Alan Alda and stars Alda, Carol Burnett, and Rita Moreno — follows three couples who vacation together every season but whose worlds are upended when one of them divorces.

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series, which is produced by Universal Television and will begin filming later in 2024.

After the success of the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel in 2019, Vivienne Medrano showed the potential that an adult animated musical series could offer. A potential that saw A24 joining into the animation space, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment as producer, leading to an eight episode season on Prime Video and a renewal for season 2. Joining Medrano on the project are songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg, who used multiple styles of music to give the series a more musical feeling than the pilot episode.

Erika Henningsen is re-teaming with Tina Fey on the latter’s upcoming Netflix series “The Four Seasons,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Henningsen and Fey previously worked together on the Broadway musical version of “Mean Girls,” for which Fey wrote the book based on the movie of the same name she also wrote. Henningsen originated the role of Cady Heron in the original Broadway production. Henningsen also recurred in “Girls5Eva,” the Peacock series that recently moved to Netflix, on which Fey is an executive producer.

Henningsen will star opposite Fey in the series as well as Steve Carell and Colman Domingo. The show is based on the 1981 film of the same name that was directed by and starred Alan Alda with Carol Burnett, Rita Moreno, Sandy Dennis, and Len Cariou also among the cast members. The series was first announced in January with an eight-episode order and is slated to begin production later this year.

At the end of 2022, I was given the Goliath task of explaining to our readers (and much of our staff) why the internet had gone completely feral over the animated design of the Devil Daddy himself, Lucifer Morningstar, on "Hazbin Hotel." Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano debuted the animated musical pilot for "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube in 2019, funded entirely by Medrano's Patreon followers and brought to life completely by freelance animators. It quickly went viral and generated a diehard fanbase, one that exists on the fringes of fandom circles and well outside of four-quadrant entertainment.

It's adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons." It's as raunchy as "South Park," but caters to a queerer audience base. “On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. Stephanie Beatriz, Keith David and Alex Brightman are set to star in Prime Video’s upcoming adult animated dark comedy Hazbin Hotel.

The full voice cast — along with a teaser of an original song — were revealed during New York Comic Con on Saturday. Erika Henningsen, Kimiko Glenn, Blake Roman and Amir Talai were also announced as series regulars during the event, with Christian Borle and Joel Perez rounding out the voice ensemble as the notable demons of Hell, Vox and Valentino, respectively.

Henningsen, known for her role as Cady Heron in Broadway’s Mean Girls musical, will voice Charlie, the estranged daughter of Lucifer who wants to find a way to redeem sinners into Heaven through rehabilitation in the Hazbin Hotel. Beatriz is set to play Vaggie, her very protective girlfriend and a skilled combatant with a heart of gold.

Alan Eisenberg, the former longtime executive director of Actors’ Equity, died Oct. 7 in Rhinebeck, New York. He was 88.

Eisenberg oversaw the union for actors and stage managers from 1981 to 2006, during which time he grew membership numbers, dealt with controversies such as the Miss Saigon casting and guided membership through the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. His death was announced by the union Monday. No cause of death was disclosed.

Eisenberg was raised in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and attended the University of Michigan as an English major. He later attended and graduated from New York University Law School and took jobs in labor law, initially representing the employers and then later turning to representing unions, first as a staff attorney for the National Labor Relations Board and then as a senior partner at Spelman, Eisenberg, Paul and Wagner.

The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.

The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

ABC has assembled the lead cast opposite Anthony Anderson of ABC’s single camera comedy pilot Public Defenders. A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.

With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.

“Girls5eva” has been renewed for Season 3, but the comedy series will be moving to Netflix from Peacock for its next outing.

Variety has learned that Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home for Season 3, while sharing Seasons 1 and 2 with Peacock. The show, which follows the surviving members of a one-hit wonder girls group from the 1990s as they reunite in the present, aired its second season finale on Peacock beginning in June.

The move marks a homecoming of sorts for “Girls5eva” creator Meredith Scardino and executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and Jeff Richmond. Netflix previously aired the series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which was co-created by Fey and Carlock, with Scardino serving as a writer and eventually co-executive producer and Richmond serving as composer and executive producer.
