For a high octane action film starring Vin Diesel as an extreme athlete version of James Bond, "XXX3: Return of Xander Cage" is much more entertaining than it has any right to be. With "Fast X" quickly approaching to help kick-off the summer season, it's clear Diesel has learned that, sometimes, there is safety in numbers. Having a huge cast around you helps take the pressure off of the actor at the top of the call sheet, and Diesel embraced the idea of having a team of some of the best action stars in the world come on board for the third adventure of Xander Cage.
Directed by DJ Caruso, the culmination of one of the most ridiculously entertaining action franchises in recent memory featured a stacked cast that included Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Samuel L. Jackson, Kris Wu, Toni Collette, and Thai boxer extraordinaire Tony Jaa as a bleach blonde villain named Talon.

A Chinese court on Friday sentenced Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu to 13 years in prison on charges including rape.
Beijing’s Chaoyang District Court said Wu was given 11 years and 6 months for a 2020 rape, and 1 year and 10 months for the “crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity” in a 2018 event in which he and others allegedly assaulted two women they had gotten drunk.
The court said the three victims in the rape case had also been drunk and were unable to consent.
It said a combined 13-year sentence was agreed on and Wu would be immediately deported after serving his time.
“According to the facts … the nature, circumstances and harmful consequences of the crime, the court made the above judgment,” the court said in an online statement.

Canadian singer Kris Wu was sentenced by a Beijing court today to 13 years in jail after being convicted on rape and other related charges.
Wu, also known as Wu Yifan, was arrested a year ago in China, where he embarked on a solo career in 2014 after leaving the K-pop group Exo. Following a criminal investigation in the district of Chaoyang, Wu was accused of raping three women.
According to Reuters, one of the accusers was an 18-year-old Chinese student who said that Wu plied her with alcohol when she was 17 to induce her, and other girls younger than 18, into having sex with him.
“Wu Yifan took advantage of three drunken women … at his home,” the court found, according to Reuters.
The Canadian embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Come back to cinema, Wkw! Tencent Pictures is China has debuted yet another new promo trailer for a web series + feature film project called Blossoms Shanghai, also known as only Blossoms (繁花) for China. This has been in the works for years and years. We featured a different trailer for this last year already, but it still hasn't been released yet. It's all rather vague. This is an adaptation of a 2012 novel of the same name from Jin Yucheng, telling the story of a young entrepreneur named Mr. Bao as he seeks wealth, status and romance set against a backdrop of China's 1990s economic boom. The story of a "self-made millionaire" in Shanghai during the 1990s, a young opportunist with a troubled past. Wong has said it is a "deeply personal venture as a return to his hometown of Shanghai," and he has been working on its script and development for five years.

A 2022 NBC reboot of “Quantum Leap” was never going to be in that first category. From an expectation-setting/self-preservation standpoint, Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) is in the machine and leaping into the past before Minute 5 of the pilot is over. The episode opens with a nod to Scott Bakula’s Sam Beckett, the role that Lee is mirroring. The audience doesn’t necessarily need to know how or why Ben is hopping his way through the past. Whatever audience this show gets will be brought in by the hook: the chance to see the show’s main character pop up in a different time,...

Following a string of celebrity scandals, Chinese officials have told young filmmakers entering China’s top film school that their foremost task is to develop the “moral cultivation” necessary to further China’s rise in the world.
The Beijing Film Academy, cradle of the country’s top filmmaking talent, last week opened a major new campus in the capital’s northern Huairou district, an hour’s drive outside the urban center. At an outdoor opening ceremony, more than 1,000 new students sat in socially distanced rows to hear speeches from local government officials, administrators and notable alumni.
The school, which last year celebrated its 70th anniversary with a splashy party, has a deserved reputation for selecting and honing some of China’s foremost directing, performing and craft talent. Past alumni include Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Jia Zhangke, Huang Xiaoming, Zhou Dongyu, Zhao Wei and Ai Weiwei.

Major China #MeToo Case Involving CCTV Anchor Rules Against Plaintiff Due to ‘Insufficient’ Evidence
A Chinese court ruled late Tuesday against the plaintiff in one of China’s most prominent #MeToo cases on the grounds that there was “insufficient” evidence to support her claims.
The ruling is a clear setback to China’s still-fledgling #MeToo movement, despite new developments recently that seemed to indicate it was picking up steam.
In 2018, Zhou Xiaoxuan, 28, accused prominent CCTV anchor Zhu Jun of groping and kissing her against her will four years prior while she was working for him as an intern — a case that went viral after she sued him for damages. Zhu has denied the charges.
Zhou has since become one of the most prominent voices pushing #MeToo awareness in China.
After years in limbo, the first hearing was finally held last December, but was closed to the public. The second hearing took place Tuesday.

The recent explosive accusations of sexual misconduct against superstar actor and rapper Kris Wu were in fact the result of three different elaborate schemes to malign and fraud him, an investigation by the Chinese police concluded late Thursday evening local time.
The police in Beijing’s Chaoyang district responsible for handling the case arrived at the results with unusual speed, issuing them just days after the most condemnatory of the allegations against Wu emerged.

Kris Wu’s Career in Jeopardy as China State Media Call for Investigation of Sexual Misconduct Claims
The scandal over sexual misconduct allegations against multi-hyphenate superstar Kris Wu has grown beyond the scope of mere celebrity gossip to become a significant incident with public-interest implications, Chinese state media declared Tuesday.
The rebukes from the country’s top official news outlets, whose stances align with that of the ruling Communist Party, likely indicate trouble ahead for Wu, who has strongly denied the allegations leveled against him. In China, politicians and entertainment industry associations have championed the idea that artists deemed to be “immoral” should be banned for life.
Earlier this month, 19-year-old student Du Meizhu began writing social media posts alleging that Wu, 30, had date-raped her when she was 17, and lured numerous other young girls to his bed through unscrupulous means. She spoke in greater detail about her claims in a Sunday interview, sparking a frenzy of attention and commentary.

Major brands are dumping their partnerships with Kris Wu, a former member of the K-pop group Exo and one of China’s most influential celebrities, after he was accused of predatory behavior toward women.
The allegations have created a nationwide scandal and set the Chinese internet on fire. It’s been quite a year for Wong Kar-wai. The legendary Hong Kong auteur’s masterpieces were restored after a years-long process and arrived in a stunning Criterion box set. He’s also been hard at work on his next project, the long-gestating Blossoms Shanghai. First produced as a TV series with production beginning last July and recently ending, plus a movie version also in the works, we got Blossoms Shanghai“>our first look last year and now a gorgeous debut trailer has arrived.
Based on Jin Yucheng’s novel, the story of Blossoms follows three Shanghai residents from the early ’60s, at the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, and through the ’90s. “Blossoms would be the third part of In the Mood for Love and 2046,” the director previously said. Starring Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Kris Wu, and Xin Zhilei, the project was written by award-winning Shanghainese screenwriter Qin Wen,...

Back in the noughties, Jingle Man delivered the Tony Leung Chu-wai starring “Tokyo Raiders” (2000) which combined a then fashionable Latino enthused soundtrack with a genuine sense of fun. It was then followed up in 2006 with “Seoul Raiders” that added Shu Qi to the mix. Whilst entertaining, the law of diminishing returns was setting in swiftly. So fast forward to 2018 and the belated third in the series came out in “Europe Raiders”. It kind of passed me by back then but ever the optimist thought I’d give it the once over.
One Christmas Lam (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and the rest of the “Four Bounty Hunters” rescue the children of a kidnapped It programmer (George Lam) whist simultaneously freeing him. As promised, Wong Kar-wai has now embarked on his long-awaited project Blossoms, which was initially delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak. With the production to continue for nine months, through spring of next year in Shanghai, we now have our first look in the form of promotional posters with the full-title reveal of Blossoms Shanghai.
Based on Jin Yucheng’s novel, the story of Blossoms follows three Shanghai residents from the early ’60s, at the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, and through the ’90s. “Blossoms would be the third part of In the Mood for Love and 2046,” the director said last year.
Starring Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Kris Wu, and reportedly Xin Zhilei, the project will take two forms: a series (with the pilot directed by Wong Kar-wai), then a feature film directed by Wong Kar-wai, which the production company Jet Tone Films confirms is still in development.

Jhené Aiko has recruited 21 Savage and Summer Walker for the official remix of her single “Triggered (Freestyle).” The song is Aiko’s only new single this year (with her on lead), following up her 2017 LP Trip.
The remix of “Triggered” remains faithful to the construction of the original; it has the same sleepy tempo. 21 Savage and Walker add new lyrics that reflect on awful break-ups. 21 Savage’s verse in particular laments how is ex-girlfriend is with a “lame dude” now. China’s government quietly ordered top Chinese talent back to the mainland from abroad this past weekend to attend a Beijing ceremony for its highest film industry honors, the loosely bi-annual Huabiao Awards. The move came just weeks after it directed mainland film executives and talent to snub after-parties and return home as quickly as possible from the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei in the wake of one winner’s controversial pro-Taiwanese independence acceptance speech.
Director Chen Kaige (“Farewell My Concubine”), the jury president at this year’s International Film Festival and Awards Macao, which began Saturday, was summoned back to China for the Huabiao Awards and missed Macao’s opening festivities. Actress Yao Chen, known for her roles in Chinese hits “Monster Hunt” and last year’s “Journey to the West 2,” was also called back to Beijing for Saturday’s festivities, but managed to return to Macao the very next day.

Nobody in the crowd at 88rising’s early October show in New York City, an unapologetic riot on the brand-new open-air rooftop at Pier 17, is confused about where they are and what they’re doing there — except the security staff, who wander around most of the night in abject confusion. A few of them watch the whole concert from the edges, looking lost; one, when I ask for directions to the elevator, asks me in return to fill him in about what’s going on.
The audience suffers no such bewilderment.

Ariana's "Thank U, Next" was then released but it was No. 4 ... behind 3 of Kris' tracks. Accusations started flying around that bots helped...

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.
