When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.

Sports Illustrated Studios & 101 Studios has partnered with future Hall of Famer Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media to produce a narrative film and a documentary about the All Star Café. The projects will be based on Jon Wertheim’s 2020 Sports Illustrated article.
The All Star Café opened in New York City on December 18, 1995, with much fanfare as the themed eatery set up to be for sports what the Hard Rock Cafe is for music. It opened with a flurry of paparazzi, red carpet and a slew of A-list celebrities and athletes, but the final buzzer sounded on September 23, 2007, when it shuttered under the cloud of bankruptcy. That final chapter included the largest sports memorabilia heist in history cooked up by a group of knuckleheaded kitchen staffers, in what has been hailed as a Coen Brothers Fargo-esque criminal event.

Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media is coming on board a harrowing new documentary from director Brian Tetsuro Ivie, titled “Cancer Alley.”
Grappling with themes of racial and environmental justice, the film tells the story of a small working-class community living in the shadow of an estimated 150 petrochemical facilities in Southern Louisiana. The area, known to locals as “cancer alley,” contains seven of the 10 most carcinogen-ridden census tracts in America and has been called a “modern-day plantation” by activists. The nickname “cancer alley” has also been disputed by some corporate leaders as a misnomer, citing below-average cancer rates in many districts. The feature will explore this controversy in depth.
“I heard about the story through a friend and then literally jumped on a plane because I had to see it for myself,” director Ivie said. “I had never seen so much death and so much life together in the same place.

On June 17, 2015, a stranger walked into Emanuel Ame church and found a Bible study in progress. They invited him to join them, but instead, Dylann Roof opened fire, killing nine Black parishioners in the process. Written and directed by Brian Ivie, the documentary “Emanuel” revisits that terrible day with the families of those who were taken so soon, so violently.
The film introduces the audience to Nadine as she’s preparing a sweet-potato pie and reminiscing about her mother, who was one of the nine members of the church not to return home that night. Next is Anthony, a pastor whose wife was also killed in the massacre. Chris, a baseball player on the rise, remembers his mother. More faces, more stories roll in, and the enormity of the losses feel bigger and bigger. It wasn’t just the victims and their immediate families who were affected, but their entire community as well.

Mass shootings continue to be a shameful stain on contemporary American history. They strike at such a frequent rate that the way they occupy news cycles before losing the public’s short-spanned attention has become appallingly routine. With his somber documentary “Emanuel,” released by Fathom Events in theaters for two nights only (June 17 and 19), director Brian Ivie (“The Drop Box”) aspires to focus on something rare and enduring that unfolded in the aftermath of one such unspeakable tragedy. It was a collective act of defiance that aimed to heal a wounded community.
That community includes a congregation in Charleston’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, who lost nine — all black lives that vastly mattered — to a gun massacre in their holy house of worship exactly four years ago. Executive produced by Viola Davis and Stephen Curry among others, “Emanuel” turns the nation’s eye on the victims’ loved ones,...

"Racism is as American as apple pie. And that's why I don't understand why so many people are shocked." The first official trailer has been unveiled for a powerful documentary titled Emanuel, made by filmmaker Brian Ivie. The doc film profiles the horrible tragedy and aftermath of the shooting at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina back in 2015, when nine innocent people were murdered by a white supremacist. Producers Viola Davis and Julius Tennon explain why they helped make this: “We, along with the country, grieved each family's loss. Yet, miraculously, from this devastation we witnessed tremendous benchmarks of humanity. The survivors found courage to love in the face of hate." The doc focuses less on the shooter, more on the victims and the neighborhood, showing "how faith, hope and forgiveness healed a community after the church shooting." What a stunning, moving trailer - that song makes all the difference.
