Charlo Johnson wanted to be a filmmaker from a very young age and even printed his own business cards at the early age of 9. It wasn't until more than a decade later that he returned to his passion and has since written, directed and produced a number of successful short films with Zimmerhands Films.
Charlo's first short film Positive Discrimination was selected to play at more than 20 film festivals in 2015. It won on a number of occasions in the US and was nominated for numerous other awards before securing a worldwide TV deal with London based Shorts.tv.
Gone Viral premiered at Galway Film Fleadh in July 2016 and critics labelled it "A Must Watch". It subsequently featured at festivals in the US, Canada, Ireland and the UK including Tacoma Film Festival, Edmonton Film Festival and DocUtah Film Festival. In October 2016, Zimmerhands Films secured a distribution deal which brought Gone Viral to Irish theaters nationwide before each showing of Mark Wahlberg's action blockbuster Deepwater Horizon. It's the first short film in the digital era to achieve a mainstream theatrical release in Ireland.
Sober Minds had its World Premiere at the Oscar and BAFTA qualifying Rhode Island International Film Festival. The Irish Premiere took place on the same weekend at Fingal Film Festival with an outdoor screening at Swords Castle. Following screenings at DocUtah Film Festival and Tacoma Film Festival, Sober Minds was nominated for Best Short Documentary at the prestigious Kinsale Shark Awards before winning Best Short Documentary at Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival.
Charlo is currently in development with his first feature film.
