This dark comedy isn’t quite as clever or funny as it thinks it is, but it’s great fun watching Moreno clearly having a blast as the baddie

Nerdy swot Ben (Connor Kalopsis) and dropout-in-the-making Tanner (Ramona Young) are high school seniors and best friends. That seems mildly implausible given their wildly different life goals: he wants to get into the same top university his recently deceased father attended, while Tanner just wants to chill and play games until climate change kills everyone off. But their friendship is the least implausible component in this dark comedy which has fun piling twists and unlikely turns of events on top of one another until the whole Jenga pile of silliness topples over in the last act.

Exclusive: Iconic Events has taken domestic rights to The Prank, a dark comedy starring Egot winner Rita Moreno (West Side Story), Connor Kalopsis (Outmatched) and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), from Xrm Media and Sneak Preview Entertainment.

Directed by Maureen Bharoocha (Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin), the SXSW 2022 crowd pleaser will hit approximately 200 screens on March 15. Myriad Pictures is selling international rights at EFM.

Everyone has that one teacher they absolutely loathe. The kind who inspires ridiculous yet horrible rumors because kids just want to justify their illogical anger with a darker truth. It’s set during the senior year of Ben (Connor Kalopsis), the kind of obsessive-compulsive overachiever who prints out several backup copies of his homework assignments, and Tanner (Ramona Young), a hacker, high on energy drinks, who’s his equally brainy but less responsible best friend. These two exist in their own unpopular cloistered geek space. But then fate throws a curveball at the striving-to-be-perfect Ben.

His AP physics class is run by the most infamous teacher at West Greenview High: a veteran instructor named Mrs. Wheeler — played, in a performance of must-see deviousness and passive-aggressive glee, by Rita Moreno. Mrs. Wheeler, with great pride, presents herself as the ultimate stern taskmaster, a kind of knowingly formidable teacher-as-drill-sergeant. She’s not just explaining the intricacies of physics (which she’s actually quite good at); she’s “training young minds” to be ready for everything the world will throw at them.

If you go to see this, The Prank’s on you.

Unspeakably lame in every department—writing, directing, acting and intent—this immature little goof on a high school murder mystery is notable only for the presence of Rita Moreno, looking and sounding some twenty years younger than her actual 90 as a sinister school teacher who should have retired and abandoned her wicked ways while she was still ahead. Absurdly plotted and handicapped by two massively unappealing lead teen characters, this is a very unlikely entry in any film festival, but it nonetheless did debut at South by Southwest.

None of Maureen Bharoocha’s three previous films over the past seven years—Fatal Flip, I Am Watching You and the decently reviewed Golden Arm—has served to put her firmly on the map, and matters are not bound to change due to the dim-witted plot, lame dialogue and thoroughly obnoxious...

Despite releasing a retrospective documentary about her astounding eight-decade career, Rita Moreno shows no signs of slowing down. The 90-year-old Egot winner has reinvented herself many times over the years, but she dons yet another beguiling disguise as a psychopathic physics teacher in the dark teen comedy “The Prank.” Her sleek black Cadillac may be an obvious nod to Cruella de Vil, but Moreno’s severe Mrs. Wheeler looks more like a Bond villain in her precise grey bob and black leather gloves.

Most of “The Prank” revolves around two squeaky-voiced teenagers: floppy-haired overachiever Ben (Connor Kalopsis) and ditzy-but-brilliant slacker Tanner (Ramona Young), broadly sketched types we’ve seen a million times. The outsized caricatures work when it comes to Mrs. Wheeler, whose slight stature collides playfully with the outsized fear she instills in her students. But the tired Gen Z tropes and cheesy one liners suck the life out...

Fox has officially canceled Outmatched.

The series follows a blue-collar couple in Atlantic City trying to get by and raise four kids — three of whom are certified geniuses.

Fox has opted not to proceed with a second season of its freshman multi-cam family comedy Outmatched.

The move, which was fully expected, leaves Prodigal Son as the only Fox series formally on the bubble. That drama, starring Michael Sheen, is getting renewed, contingent on finalizing deals and locking in Sheen’s schedule.

Outmatched, the only new live-action comedy introduced by Fox this season, never quite registered creatively or ratings-wise, but Fox brass love the two leads, Jason Biggs and Maggie Lawson, and may try to get them for other network shows, I hear.

Fox has canceled the multi-camera comedy “Outmatched” after one season, TheWrap has learned.

“Outmatched” was one of a handful of shows absent from Fox’s schedule for the 2020-21 season when the network announced it last week. “Last Man Standing” and the medical drama “The Resident” have since been picked up for new seasons, leaving the freshman drama “Prodigal Son” as the only scripted series still awaiting a decision from the network.

The cancellation leaves Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” and midseason entry “Call Me Kat” as the network’s only two live-action comedies currently on the slate for next season.

I’ve got a great and creepy new horror short film for you to watch today. It’s called The Candlelight Witch and it centers on three siblings who end up telling a scary story to pass the time during a blackout. As you might imagine, the chilling tale proves to be more dangerous than legend.

The short was directed by Becca Flinn-White, and is inspired by the kind of horror that you might see on the series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The films stars Brooke Sorenson, Presley Richardson, Connor Kalopsis, and Emily Burkart.

“Fake it til you make it” is Rob Lowe’s mantra as Dean Sanderson, Jr. in Fox’s new original series “The Grinder.” Lowe stars as a hotshot television lawyer who returns to his hometown and joins his family’s law firm. Unfortunately, Dean lacks several important necessities of being a lawyer — no bar certification, no license to practice law, no experience in a real courtroom and no formal education. Fox loves a familiar face, and whether that means renewing shows that have been on way too long, or picking up a new show with Rob Lowe and Fred Savage. You can’t blame them, because people, but this one looks like it might have an uphill battle for fans… or it will be brilliant… or both.

In a spin on legal shows that seems to suggest an underlying dislike of legal shows, Lowe plays an actor who was on a show playing a lawyer for several years. With his show finally off the air, he’s moving back home, and his brother (Savage), who is actually a lawyer, can’t stand him.

That sounds like the perfect opportunity for The Grinder to prance around real courts, stealing his brother’s lack of thunder.

Hilarity ensues.

This is a show littered with difficulty, but there is a chance that it could pull everything together.

With the 2014-2015 television season winding down, many television fans and channels are looking ahead to the new series that will make their debut over the next television season. Fox is no different, having announced their renewals, cancellations, and new series pickups over the last week, and the network has now released trailers for a number of their new series.

First up is the trailer for the new animated series Bordertown.

From Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann comes Bordertown, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. – Mexico border. Recently, CBS released the new,official synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming "NCIS" episode 7 of season 12.
