Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

Set in Austin, Texas, “English Teacher” follows an openly gay teacher by the name of Evan Marquez who wants to encourage his students and community to be more accepting. More often than not, that desire leads to Evan having to confront his own assumptions and being forced to chill out. Wonder who’s who in the new show filled with new faces? Here’s your guide to the cast of this comedy.

Saddle up, y’all, Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” is finally back in action.
After earning nine Emmy nominations for its excellent third season, including one for Best Drama Series and acting bids for Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce, the darkly comedic espionage thriller about MI5’s worst spies returns this week with its most personal outing yet.
In the new season, the first episode of which is now streaming, River (Lowden) finds himself caught in the crosshairs after his grandfather (Pryce), a former high-ranking member of the intelligence service who is now in the early stages of dementia, is attacked by an assailant impersonating River. As the younger Cartwright and the rest of Slough House attempt to get to the bottom of this latest mess, numerous personal and professional secrets are revealed that threaten not just our beloved, screwed-up heroes, but the whole of MI5 as well.

Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is going through it.
The high school English teacher in suburban Texas recently broke up with boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman), is under investigation by the school board for kissing him in front of students, doesn’t want to be a local queer hero, and is also expressly forbidden from dating fellow teachers, like handsome new hire Harry (Langston Kerman).
FX’s latest comedy stays true to its genre, with laugh-out-loud dialogue, casually outrageous characters, and scenarios that could be out of the sitcom handbook on the surface, but get sharpened to a 2024 clip by Alvarez and fellow writers Stephanie Koenig, Jake Bender, Zach Dunn, and Dave King. Jokes fly so fast that they could be improvised, setting the bar from the very first scene for a show bursting with humor even when the plot goes off course.

Hear that bell? Yes, FX is taking us back to school with the new comedy English Teacher.
Monday’s premiere introduces us to Evan, played by star and series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez, who grooves to the ’80s classic “Maniac” before heading into work (late) as a teacher at an Austin high school. He marvels to his colleague Gwen (Stephanie Koenig) at lunch that his students are “not into being woke anymore.” (“They’re saying the R-word again,” Gwen notes.) Gym teacher Markie (Sean Patton) then launches into a rant against Communist China, but they loudly remind him, “No politics!

High school has been a reliable TV sitcom setting since the days of Welcome Back, Kotter, but the situation in American schools is so fraught these days, it’s not exactly a laugh riot. FX’s English Teacher, though — premiering Monday, Sept. 2 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — bravely wades into those choppy waters and finds plenty of laughs there by taking a refreshingly frank look at our current educational system. It’s one of the funniest new shows of the year, and it’s a triumph for star and series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez, who announces...

I had to google a bit about both comedian Langston Kerman and Jewish comedy in order to get the full context of the comedian’s latest Netflix special, interestingly titled Bad Poetry. It was already funny and relevant for me, but the research post-watch enhanced the experience further. This is the first time I have seen Kerman perform, and I have no doubt that I’ll start following the Jewish comedian from now on.
Kerman happens to be a black Jewish man in his mid-thirties, but complexion-wise, he is almost white. That’s how he is introduced on the stage. Later, he goes on to explain that his father is white and his mother is black, resulting in him looking the way he does. He goes on telling the audience that his wife is also the same as him before landing on a hilarious white baby joke that’s so...

Langston Kerman convinced his mother-in-law to put him in charge of her dating apps — bad news for her prospective suitors but good news for comedy. Kerman leads off his new Netflix special, Bad Poetry, by not only explaining how he’s seducing men on an elderly woman’s behalf but by playing their lovelorn audio messages as well.
An invasion of privacy? Elder abuse? Sure, that’s why it’s fun. And it’s what makes Kerman so interesting as a stand-up — he’s believable as the guy to whom you’d entrust your romantic future. Yet he’s enough of an impish a-hole that you’re not surprised when he publicly embarrasses the dopes with their clumsy messages of love.
In that way, he’s not unlike John Mulaney, a comic who intuitively seems like a good dude even while he insists he’s a borderline criminal. Mulaney is...

It's a new week and a ton of AMC shows are coming to Netflix! It's like they took all their most popular shows and threw them at Netflix. But with the chance to rewatch some of my faves, I am definitely not complaining. There are also a few non-amc movies and shows coming to the streaming service.
First up this week is A Discovery of Witches seasons 1-3! The series based on the popular book series by Deborah Harkness first hit TV screens in 2019 and became just as popular as the books. It hits Netflix on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024.
The series stars Teresa Palmer, Matthew Goode, Alex Kingston, Adelle Leonce, and Edward Blumel. It follows historian and witch Diana Bishop as she comes into her powers solving the mysteries of the Ashmole 782. But she also happens to fall in love with the witch's worst enemy: a vampire.

FX’s English Teacher is a comedy series created by Brian Jordan Alvarez. In it, he stars as Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional, and political aspects of working at a high school.

John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.
But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.
Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. AlleyCatz, an unassuming bowling alley in a fictional California town, isn’t compelling to passersby or potential customers from the outside. The venue run by Mozell (Sister Sister’s Jackée Harry) has a drab brick exterior, a monument to the sad architecture of suburban shopping centers. It doesn’t offer much when you walk inside either. The lanes need waxing, the bar requires tending and the equipment is in various stages of disrepair. Some people might take one look at AlleyCatz and run, but Walt (Shameik Moore), the silly protagonist of Yassir and Isaiah Lester’s boisterous directorial debut The Gutter, doesn’t have a choice. He needs a job.
The young man, who prefers to live life without a shirt, has been fired from more gigs than he can count. In a particularly amusing early sequence, Walt recounts his shoddy employment history to Mozell, whose face becomes increasingly disturbed with each revelation.

The comedy series from co-creators Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin is not getting a fourth season, a representative for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.
“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created,” the statement read. HBO Max went on to praise the team at MTV Entertainment Studios, which was behind the series, in addition to the “supremely talented” cast and crew.
“For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor,” the message continued. “The result was a wholly unique, ambitious and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”

Chris Redd is a very busy man. The Emmy winner stars in three shows this TV season, returning for his fifth season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” the second season of “Kenan” and his new Peacock comedy “Bust Down, “which he also co-created. So how exactly was he able to balance all of those commitments? “I haven’t slept in two years,” quips Redd in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I’ve always been a workaholic and I definitely met my match with working on these shows at the same time.” Watch the full video interview above.

How did you spend your pandemic? Here’s how Sam Jay got through these past two years: Her Netflix special “Sam Jay: 3 in the Morning” debuted in July 2020. While continuing to work as a writer on “Saturday Night Live,” she also wrote on HBO Max’s “That Damn Michael Che,” served as a consulting producer on NBC’s “Kenan,” and then launched her own talk show, HBO’s “Pause With Sam Jay.”
Still not enough? In March, Peacock debuted the comedy series “Bust Down,” which Jay co-created and stars in alongside Chris Redd, Langston Kerman and Jak Knight. With so many gigs all at once, at this year’s WGA Awards, Jay pulled off a triple nomination in the comedy/variety sketch series category for her work on “SNL,” “Michael Che” and “Pause.”
But here’s the thing: This all happened mostly during an age of lockdowns, social distancing, quarantines and masks.

Soldier Boy certainly is no Superman.
In the latest trailer for Season 3 of Prime Video’s “The Boys,” premiering June 3, new supe Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) makes his debut — complete with a bloody murder sequence by plowing his shield into the face of a presumed baddie.
Set one year since the events of the critically acclaimed Season 2, “The Boys” kicks off with Homelander (Anthony Starr) completing his apology tour for “falling in love with the wrong woman” — ahem, an ageless Nazi named Klara Risinger, aka Stormfront (Aya Cash), who helped found the sinister Vought conglomerate — and Hughie (Jack Quaid) becoming a senior analyst for the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs.
Meanwhile, Butcher (Karl Urban) is applauded for not killing supes and laying off the booze. That is, until Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) presents Butcher with vials to make him a superhero for just 24 hours a time to properly put a...
