The aims of the animated anthology Secret Level, whose 15 shorts are based on video and tabletop games, are clear enough: As production company Blur Studio puts it on their website, “Secret Level is our love letter to gaming.” But despite the tangible earnestness of that claim, the series fails to shake off the cynicism of its commercial function and blinkered politics. Beneath flashes of beauty and fits of inspiration lies an elaborate branding exercise.
Secret Level features a handful of shorts that conjure impressive moods. The bleak industrial landscapes in “Armored Core: Asset Management” all but subsume the episode’s protagonist (Keanu Reeves)—and the formidable mech he pilots—conveying the extent of his alienation and the stakes of his mission; the economical “Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear” spares us unnecessary dialogue, setting its space marines loose with sweltering kineticism; and the martial arts revenge tale of...

Every year the Belfast Film Festival makes the effort to put some truly independent small scale Irish productions on the map, and this year’s The Spin, directed by first-timer Michael Head (whom some viewers will be familiar with from his acting work), is one of the better ones. It follows best friends and record shop proprietors Dermot (Brenock O’Connor) and Elvis (Owen Colgan) as they embark on a cross-country quest to save their business and the former’s relationship with his daughter, and though the story is simple, the likeable characters and lively banter make it an enjoyable watch.
Like many entrepreneurs who do what they do for love more than for money, our heroes have found themselves struggling to make rent, and their magnificently attired but empathy-challenged landlady Sadie (Tara Lynne O’Neill) is threatening to turn Boneyard Records into a nail salon. Fortunately for them, they’ve learned of a record.

Exclusive: Barbara Broccoli, with her theater hat on, is transferring the Sing Street musical to London. The play is based on John Carney’s charming 2016 coming-of-age movie about a group of skint schoolkids in 1982 Dublin who form a rock band to help them find love and forget their troubles.
The show, from the team behind Once, is another musical adapted from a film created by Carney.
Once, with James Bond producer Broccoli as lead producer, went on to win eight trophies at the 66th Tony Awards, including Best Musical and a Best Book win for playwright-screenwriter Enda Walsh, who performs the same writing duties on Sing Street.
Walsh confirmed that the Sing Street musical will preview at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, West London beginning July 8 for a limited run until August 23.

Those teen spies, they grow up so fast! “This show means so much to me. I’ve pretty much grown up — me and Brenock and Marli — we’ve grown up doing it,” agrees Otto Farrant of his Alex Rider experience. He’s not kidding. Along with aforementioned costars Brenock O’Connor and Marli Siu, who play his junior James Bond’s best pals and sometimes sidekicks Tom and Kyra, Farrant has spent nearly half a decade bringing Anthony Horowitz‘s YA best sellers about an underaged special-ops agent to rollicking, adrenalized life for Freevee (formerly known as IMDbTV). “I think it was five years ago that I did my first audition. We’ve got three seasons and I think this season is the best one yet.” “It does feel like an enormous journey to have made,” echoes book series author and exec producer Horowitz. “And of course, because of the time...

"Everyone - stay awake, whatever you do! Don't even close your eyes...!" Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie horror film titled Double Blind, which is a reference to the drug test study concept of even keeping the researchers in the dark. This first premiered at last year's Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Fest, then it also stopped by the FilmQuest Fest in the US. After an experimental drug trial goes awry, the test subjects face a terrifying side effect: if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated facility, panic ensues as they try to escape and somehow stay awake. Fighting off sleep, and each other, to stay alive. Starring Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh, Kate Ashfield, Diarmuid Noyes, Akshay Kumar, and Brenock O'Connor. Set for release in February if anyone is interested in finding out who makes it out alive... This looks intense, not sure why they're attacking each other.

This article contains spoilers for the final season of "Game of Thrones."
In the most unsurprising news out of Westeros since Cersei Lannister admitted that her kids weren't her husband Robert's, actor Kit Harington has revealed that his character, Jon Snow, is "not okay" following the events of HBO's "Game of Thrones." Has Jon Snow ever been "okay," really, save for his various horny adventures in ice caves and on boats? The man has a perpetual pout to rival Morpheus' from "The Sandman" or even Robert Pattinson's Batman, so I can't imagine that he'd be particularly cheery after he gets exiled to the Wall for regicide and kin-slaying after he killed his aunt-girlfriend, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), because she went power-mad and started murdering everyone. It's hard to imagine anyone being in a good state of mind after all of that, let alone eternal sad boy Jon Snow.

Kit Harington is keeping tight-lipped about the upcoming Jon Snow sequel series that’s in the works.
The actor played the role in “Game of Thrones”, with him failing to dish the dirt on the upcoming show during an official “GoT” Convention on Sunday.
However, he did talk about how he left the character during that much-talked about season finale in 2019.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Harington said of Snow killing Daenerys and being banished to the Wall in the North: “I think if you asked him, he would’ve felt he got off lightly.
“At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he’s preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be. He’s done. The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse.

Alex Rider is finally premiering in the U.S.
The hit adaptation of the Anthony Horowitz novel series launches on IMDb TV on Friday, November 13.

This is not Alex Rider's first foray in front of the screen, with the original novel, Stormbreaker, being adapted into a movie starring Alex Pettyfer.

"It was a decision made by the producers and myself from the very start because Stormbreaker would have already been covered," said Horowitz.
"It was sensible to keep moving forward. We did, however, add some of the original material from Stormbreaker back the series. We had to explain how Alex became a spy."

Point Blanc
Blanc, not Blank!
That’s the name of the mysterious academy that has quite a few skeletons hidden in its cupboards. The fact that this academy, stylishly called Point Blanc, is in the middle of the alps further lends a mystic feel to the entire setting. Well, this is where teenager Alex Rider has been given the responsibility by none other than MI6 to run his own espionage operation. That when the boy is all of 14 and the entire British intelligence is hinging on his support to find out what happens behind the curtains!
Preposterous as it may sound but such is the prowess of Anthony Horowitz’s writing (originally seen and read in the multi-edition novel of the same name) that you allow suspension of disbelief to set in and join this spy show. Even as those with a conscience want the spy agency’s...

Alex Rider Season 2 is officially in the works at Sony Pictures Television.
Developed by screenwriter Guy Burt, and based on the bestselling book series by Anthony Horowitz (creator of U.K. WWII-era detective series Foyle’s War), Sony’s Alex Rider follows the titular teen (Otto Farrant), who discovers a family legacy in the spy game after his late uncle/adoptive father seemingly dies under mysterious circumstances. Subsequently recruited by MI6 subdivision the Department of Special Operations, Alex undergoes a transformative training process for a job that uproots his adolescent life.
The second season renewal of Alex Rider arrives, via Deadline, shortly after the TV series made its June 4 debut, specifically in the franchise’s homefront, on Amazon U.K. However, while it has yet to arrive in most countries, including the U.S., Sony is reportedly close to landing a deal for platforms in the U.S., Australia and China.

International espionage is a lonely business. Global superspies rarely enjoy the everyday comfort of family and friends. When the people you love can be used against you, personal attachment presents a risk. It’s why you never see James Bond swapping memes on a ‘Steve’s 40th’ WhatsApp group or hitting Nando’s with his five-a-side mates. To spy is to be alone.
Even teen agent Alex Rider, recruited by MI6 aged 14 in the hit Anthony Horowitz book series, is isolated from his peers. Alex’s world-saving adventures take him away from school and his social circle. The friends he does have are few and far between, schoolmate Tom Harris popping up in only three of the 14 Alex Rider novels.
In Sony’s new eight-part Alex Rider series, out now on Amazon Prime UK, that’s been tweaked. Tom’s character has been expanded and written into the events of Point Blanc,...

From the brilliant mind of Anthony Horowitz, comes a new adaptation of his series of Alex Rider novels, that tell the story of a teenage spy avenging the death of his uncle. To mark the launch – on Amazon Prime Video on June 4th – we had the pleasure of speaking to the lead role himself, Otto Farrant. He was paired with the brilliant Brenock O’Connor, who plays Alex’s best friend in this exciting new series.
Watch the full interview with both leading cast-members below:
Synopsis
When Alex Rider learns that his uncle Ian has been killed in the line of duty as a British spy – and not in a car accident like he’s been told – everything changes for this otherwise normal teen. He is approached by Alan Blunt, head of a shadowy offshoot of MI6 known as The Department, who reveals that Alex has been unknowingly trained since childhood...

This spoiler-free Alex Rider review is based on episodes 1-4.
For UK kids born after 1990, and parents and teachers of the same, Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling Alex Rider books need no introduction. School libraries keep multiple spine-cracked, Sellotape-repaired copies. ‘Stormbreaker’ posters decorate classroom walls, and in schools around the country, tie-in ‘Scorpia’ key stage worksheets are photocopied by the hundredweight. Booksellers asked by customers how to entice a young, reluctant, usually male reader into fiction don’t even wait for the question to end before plucking an Alex Rider off their shelves. When Harry Potter has done all he can, reach for Alex.
For everybody else, the Rider books tell the phenomenally popular story of a 14-year-old London schoolboy recruited by MI6 as a spy. Armed with comically age-appropriate gadgets including metal-dissolving acne cream, a grappling hook disguised as a yo-yo, and a Sony Discman that turns into a circular saw,...

It’s March 2019 and actor Otto Farrant is sitting in his car listening to heavy metal at top volume. Over the din, he’s screaming out the words to Jake Bugg’s ‘Seen it All’ (‘I’ve seen it all/I’ve seen it all now/I swear to god I’ve seen it all/ Nothing shocks me anymore.’) He changes songs, trying another, then another, and another. For an hour. For two hours. It leaves him and his voice totally drained.
No, the stress of leading Sony’s new teen spy thriller Alex Rider hasn’t got to him. This is rehearsal. He’s practising for an upcoming scene in which his character – a teenage schoolboy recruited by MI6 – is kidnapped and tortured by a band of mysterious operatives.

Amazon Prime Video has taken U.K. rights to coming-of-age spy thriller “Alex Rider,” which will launch on the platform in June.
Produced by Eleventh Hour Films and Sony Pictures Television, the show is based on the second novel in Anthony Horowitz’s “Alex Rider” novels, “Point Blanc.” All eight episodes of the series will launch on Amazon on June 4.
The show was produced under a unique funding model that saw distributor Sony come on board in 2018 to fully finance the project without a lead commissioning broadcaster or platform attached.
The series stars Otto Farrant as Alex Rider, a London-based teenager who has unknowingly been trained since childhood to be a spy. Pressured to help investigate his uncle’s death, and how it connects to the assassination of two high-profile billionaires, Alex goes undercover in a remote boarding school called Point Blanc.

Off Broadway’s hit Sing Street, a musical adaptation of the 2016 film about a group of Dublin teens in the 1980s who form a New Wave band to escape troubled home lives and small town drudgery, will transfer to Broadway in March.
Previews begin Thursday, March 26, at the Lyceum Theatre, with an opening night on Sunday April 19.
Staged Off Broadway by the New York Theatre Workshop with a book by playwright Enda Walsh (Lazarus) based on the film written and directed by John Carney – the same triumvirate behind Broadway’s smash Once – the sold-out show’s transfer was not unexpected. Reviews were mostly positive and generally encouraging if not full-on raves, with some critics pointing to fixable flaws like pacing while almost universally praising the lead performance by young Brenock O’Connor.

The word spoiler is in the headline and I just placed it in bold type as the third word in this first sentence so if you somehow don't get it, well, that's your problem. Now, onto the topic at hand, last night's "Game of Thrones" and that wonderful finale that once again has people throwing their arms in the air, declaring they are done with the show as it hasn't delivered the Disney-fied version of the fictional world they so desire. Seriously, I've seen such complaints on the Internet as people are complaining the show is just too bleak... I guess they didn't watch the first four seasons or perhaps their parents edited them down and told them, "No, Ned Stark didn't die, he just lives with a family in the country now where he can run free and have a good time," just before tucking them into their race car bed.

The acting is as impressive as the violence in Game Of Thrones' eventful season 5 finale. Spoilers ahead...
This review contains spoilers.
5.10 Mother's Mercy
Game Of Thrones doesn't really have event season finales, but the fifth season is the one that's apparently going to break the mould. Sure, there's always some cool Daenerys-related tidbit (birthing dragons, freeing the slaves, and so on), but this season it seems like the annual Episode Nine bloodbath came in the episodes preceding and following after the typical “look out for craziness” moment in every season. I don't remember a season finale packing quite this much punch historically, as everyone in Westeros seemed bound and determined to kill or be killed in some sort of mad rush to find a new job for the next television season. The body count is high this week, and while some of it was expected, some of it was a surprise.

A bold new era has begun on "Game of Thrones". We are now (with a few exceptions) all on the same page. The major events book readers have kept under wraps for as long as they could, have played out on screen. With much of season five carrying the trend of diverting from the novels towards downright invention, the discussion surrounding the show has become more complex. Now that the show has delivered on many of this season's promises, there is a lot to talk about. No one will consider "Mother's Mercy" an optimistic or hopeful episode and Stannis (Stephen Dillane) sets the tone. After his horrific actions seem to have paid off in the form of a thaw, he is quickly dealt three massive blows that could only be interpreted as cosmic retribution. His men have abandoned him, his wife has abandoned him, and his lord has abandoned him...

The ninth episode of every season of "Game of Thrones" is the one people remember. The last four seasons gave us the fate of Ned Stark (Sean Bean), the Battle of the Blackwater, the Red Wedding, and the Battle of the Wall. For season five, the memorable action-packed episode was delivered early in the form of "Hardhome", but "The Dance of Dragons" features an ending that should find its way into that pantheon. Before that ending, the show has a bit of business to take care of to set up the finale. In Dorne, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Prince Doran (Alexander Siddig) broker an unstable peace. Doran, again, recounts his horrendous experiences with war which serve to highlight why he is, seemingly, willing to do anything to prevent hostilities with King's Landing. He is even willing to let Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) return with Jaime provided his son, Trystane (Toby Sebastian...

I wonder what the argument against my opinion on the narrative structure of "Game of Thrones" will be this time as last night's episode, "The Watchers on the Wall", was the first of this fourth season (that I can remember at least) that didn't operate in fits and starts over the course of an hour, but instead opted for a central focus. After all, my complaints this season have all surrounded the way each episode has sporadically bounced from character-to-character before settling on some big "surprise" moment at the end of each episode, leaving us all in "suspense" as to what will happen in the next episode. Well, how'd that work out for you this timec After all, last we left Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) his head was on the chopping block, a week later and that's exactly where it remains (just as it has remained virtually this entire season all...
