Robert Winnett will not become editor of The Washington Post, after all, the newspaper’s embattled CEO and publisher Will Lewis told staffers Friday morning.
“It is with regret that I share with you that Robert Winnett has withdrawn from the position of editor at The Washington Post. Rob has my greatest respect and is an incredibly talented editor and journalist,” Lewis said in a “newsroom leadership update” posted to The Washington Post’s comms blog.
Later this year, after the 2024 U.S. presidential election in November, Winnett — a veteran of the U.K.’s Telegraph Media Group and a former colleague of Lewis in London — was to have become editor of The Washington Post. That move followed Sally Buzbee leaving as executive editor of the iconic newspaper in early June.

Robert Winnett will not be joining the Washington Post as editor this fall, amid the fallout following a staff revolt over CEO Will Lewis’ abrupt change in newsroom leadership and reports that have raised ethical concerns over his and Winnett’s previous journalism practices in the UK.
Winnett, deputy editor of The Telegraph Media Group, has decided to stay in London. Chris Evans, the editor of the Telegraph, wrote in a memo to staffers, per the Post, “I’m pleased to report that Rob Winnett has decided to stay with us. As you all know, he’s a talented chap and their loss is our gain.”

Maybe you’re sick of hearing about all the turmoil over at The Washington Post in recent weeks: how Sir William Lewis, a veteran of the Murdoch news empire, now WaPo’s CEO, has sparked outrage amongst much of the staff by pushing out editor Sally Buzbee and bringing in his British buddy Robert Winnett. But there’s another new player at the paper — also a Murdoch vet — who has been getting less ink, although there’s clearly plenty of ink to spill. That’d be Matt Murray, the Post’s new executive editor.
Two years ago, during the summer of 2022, when Murray was editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, that paper ran a bombshell story headlined “Elon Musk’s Friendship With Sergey Brin Ruptured by Alleged Affair.” The story detailed how the Tesla chief had an alleged liaison with the Google billionaire’s estranged wife (and now Rfk Jr.

The Washington Post is launching a new digital newsroom that aims to reach consumers on non-traditional platforms like Twitter and Facebook, the organization said on Monday.
The newsroom — its third overall — will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to produce more visual-storytelling, the Post said. It will also offer “flexible payment methods” for consumers who want to support the Post’s new digital news offerings, though it didn’t offer any insight into how that will work.
The venture will be separate, but complementary, to the Post’s core newsroom, which is focused on creating print and video journalism in a traditional sense, distributed across the legacy newspaper format and the Washington Post website and apps.

Sally Buzbee has stepped down as executive editor of The Washington Post, the newspaper announced on Sunday.
In the newsroom restructuring, Matt Murray, former editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal, will replace Buzbee until the 2024 U.S. presidential election in November, after which Robert Winnett, deputy editor of The Telegraph Media Group, will take on a newly-created editor role.
“Sally is an incredible leader and a supremely talented media executive who will be sorely missed. I wish her all the best going forward,” William Lewis, CEO and publisher of the Post, wrote in a statement.
Buzbee, who joined the Post in 2021, was the first woman to lead the nearly 150-year-old newspaper. Under her leadership, they won significant awards, including the recent Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.

Sally Buzbee is stepping down as executive editor of The Washington Post after three years, as the publication plans to alter the structure of the newsroom leadership.
Matt Murray, former editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, will succeed Buzbee through the 2024 election. Then, Robert Winnett, deputy editor of The Telegraph Media Group, will take on the new role as editor of the Post, responsible for overseeing core coverage areas including politics, investigations, business, technology, sports and features.
The newsroom restructuring will include the creation of a new division “dedicated to better serving audiences who want to consume and pay for news differently from traditional offerings.” That will include service and social media journalism that is run separately from the core news operation, the Post said.
Buzbee’s exit is the biggest leadership shake up at the Jeff Bezos-owned media property since new publisher and CEO Will Lewis joined the publication in January.

Remember when Disney started to acquire and buy out tons of studios, and how that was supposed to be a huge deal in the entertainment industry? Sure, it ended up strengthening franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also resulted in some devastating closures and missed opportunities for out-of-the-ordinary media. Regardless of how you feel about Disney's dominance in Hollywood, it looks like those days are over. At least, if current CEO Bob Chapek is to be believed.
At the Wall Street Journal Tech Live 2022 conference on Wednesday, Chapek claimed that Disney is not looking to acquire any more networks or studios (via Variety). He believes the conglomerate has everything it needs right now to make the best media possible.
"We have the best creative teams, the best brands and franchises in the world," he told WSJ editor-in-chief, Matt Murray, at the conference. "We're quite happy to have the...

Disney is not currently in the market to buy another studio or network, chief executive officer Bob Chapek said.
“We have the best creative teams, the best brands and franchises in the world,” said Chapek, speaking at the WSJ Tech Live 2022 conference Wednesday. “We’re quite happy to have the output level across our channels without having to be a buyer in the open marketplace.”
Disney’s biggest content acquisitions came under its previous CEO, Bob Iger. In 2019, the conglomerate closed its 71 billion deal for 21st Century Fox assets, coming after earlier buying Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm.
At this point, Chapek said, “Our plan is to have all our content creation self-contained.”
After Disney’s production capabilities were backed up during Covid, the company is now nearing a point at which it is going to “finally reach” some level of stability in terms of producing content at the right cadence,...

Disney CEO Bob Chapek outlined a vision of blending the company’s potent streaming operations with its thriving theme park business, in order to deliver a more “customized and personalized” consumer experience.
“It’s the physical and the digital aspects of your Disney lifestyle coming together,” he said during a half-hour sit-down at The Wall Street Journal‘s Tech Live conference. “If you’re on Disney+, we should be aware, assuming you give us the permission to have that awareness, of what happened, what you experienced, what you liked the last time you visited a park. And, vice versa, when you’re in a park, we should know what your viewing habits are on Disney+.”
Efforts to unify those two branches of the company’s operations operations are under way, Chapek said. “We’re putting the arms and legs on it right now inside our own technical groups. What we...

In The Dark will end after its upcoming fourth season on the CW. Season 4 is slated to premiere June 6.
The drama series, from CBS Studios, Warner Bros. TV and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, was on the bubble, but had been boosted by streaming. In The Dark is written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter. It had debuted as a mid-season entry during the 2018–19 television season, and aired during the late spring/early summer in 2020. Its third season ended on October 6, 2021.
The series stars Perry Mattfeld as Murphy Mason, Brooke Markham as Jess Damon, Casey Deidrick as Max Parish, Keston John as Darnell James, Morgan Krantz as Felix Bell, Theodore Bhat as Josh and Matt Murray as Gene Clemens.
In the first three seasons, Murphy Mason (Mattfeld) had gone from a lazy receptionist to a drunken vigilante detective to a drug front proprietor, and then, a woman-on-the-run.

When Sierra Teller Ornelas was in pre-production on her new Peacock comedy “Rutherford Falls,” she found inspiration in a quote she read from showrunner Prentice Penny describing his movie “Uncorked” as “This is Black people on a Tuesday.”
The film, which follows a young man on his quest to become a master sommelier, did not take place at a major life event such as a wedding, nor did it result in tragedy; it told a slice of life story. WarnerMedia’s recent restructuring was “spot on,” and the company accelerated those changes to the media division — which had been eyed for 2021 — because of the Covid pandemic to boost the profile of the HBO Max streaming service, according to AT&T CEO John Stankey.
Stankey, speaking Monday at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Live streaming conference, praised the changes made by WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, the former Hulu chief who started in the role on May 1. The organizational revamp has “been nothing short of significant and absolutely spot on in terms of the direction,” Stankey said.
In August, WarnerMedia laid off hundreds of employees across Warner Bros., HBO and DC Entertainment. That came after a major management shakeup by Kilar, under which HBO Max content leaders Robert Greenblatt and Kevin Reilly were let go and Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff assumed additional oversight over content for HBO Max and basic cable networks.

AT&T CEO John Stankey continues to express no misgivings over the launch of HBO Max in May, citing the unforeseeable impact of Covid-19 as its only real blemish.
During a keynote session today kicking off the Wall Street Journal‘s Tech Live conference, Stankey pronounced himself “very happy” with the debut of the streaming service. Citing WarnerMedia Day, a gathering for investors and press last October, he maintained, “We have done exactly what we said we were going to do.”
He went through a range of deliverables, noting HBO Max has reached one hour of daily viewer engagement and has a younger audience skew. The service is “ahead on subscriber counts” of initial targets revealed last year.
Asked by moderator Matt Murray, the Journal‘s editor-in-chief for updated subscriber numbers, Stankey declined to offer any, citing AT&T’s third-quarter earnings report on Thursday, which will include those stats. On...

If you sometimes want to stay away from the news because it's overwhelming, you have a lot in common with the creators of TV shows.
Because dramatizations of the news aren't appealing to audiences who generally see TV as an escape, TV producers and writers often try to walk a fine line between relevance and direct commentary.
One of the main reasons to ensure political distance is that a show often needs to be timeless and play well in syndication or at a future date.
Another reason is that the show's creators don't necessarily want the show's message from being co-opted by whatever political debates are happening at the moment.
As the culture wars have gotten more polarizing, alienating large fan bases isn't beneficial for TV, which has to reach a wider audience.
But that doesn't mean the creators of TV shows aren't influenced by what's happening in their environment...

Hello, everyone. Last week, I had to take a few days off to deal with some personal stuff, but I’m back now with my latest recap for TNT’s Snowpiercer series that digs into episodes 4 and 5, where we see the culmination of the murder mystery aboard the titular train, as well as the resulting actions and fallout from everything that follows once the killers and their motives are revealed. Oh, and there’s a whole lot more happening as well.
Now, on to the good stuff…
In “Without Their Maker,” the theme of episode four is spelled out rather simply: systems resist change without their maker, which of course is in relation to the fact that Mr. Wilford is more myth than man after seven years aboard the Snowpiercer. And with Nikki now brutally murdered, Layton (Daveed Diggs) sets out to find the killer that must be a First Class passenger,...

Snowpiercer Episode 4
Is anyone really surprised that there are two different sets of rules in the world of Snowpiercer? The rich, as we’ve seen, get to live out their days in luxury, enjoying Jinju’s delicious food and not worrying all that much about disruptions in Third Class and another revolt in the tail. That’s just easily dismissed train talk, the “train talk” being the gossip network that thrives in any ecosystem. All of the violence and rough business happens far down the train; the only thing the true elites like Lilah Folger (Kerry O’Malley) and company have to worry about is a besmirched reputation. And if they do have any issues, well… they have their armed security guards around to take care of that sort of thing.
That reveal is a shock to Layton (Daveed Diggs), who as a former cop would...

Last week, NBC pulled its freshman comedy Sunnyside from its Thursday night schedule and will air the fourth episode on Thursday, which will be the last on the linear network. The comedy co-created by Kal Penn and Matt Murray and executive produced by Mike Schur will air its remaining seven episodes on NBC’s digital platforms, but it isn’t 100 percent clear if the show has been canceled.
During a screening event of the fourth episode, Murray told Deadline that they pulled the comedy off the network before they were supposed to shoot episode 10 — which was going to be the final episode. “They did not tell us to stop production,” he said. “We shot episode 10 after they made the announcement and we are shooting the 11th episode now. It’s very confusing to me, but as someone who loves the cast and the writers, we’re doing everything we can to give ourselves a shot.

NBC pulled “Sunnyside” from its schedule earlier this week, but the Kal Penn comedy will continue streaming Season 1 on Hulu. That wasn’t always a guarantee.
On Tuesday, NBC announced that it was pulling freshman sitcom “Sunnyside” from its schedule after just four episodes, banishing the remainder of the season to its digital platforms and effectively canceling the show.
NBC simultaneously announced that it had commissioned an additional episode, bringing the total number of installments for the season from 10 to 11. According to an individual close to the show’s producers, the episode won’t actually wrap up the run, which has an ending — it will instead be shoehorned into the existing story arc, around Episode 8 or 9.
The “Sunnyside” writing staff is scrambling to get that script ready for production, the individual tells us.

NBC is pulling “Sunnyside” from its linear schedule, moving the Kal Penn-led comedy to its digital platforms exclusively.
The broadcast network has commissioned an additional episode of episode of the comedy, extending its order from 10 to 11 episodes, but the show’s remaining seven episodes will be shunned to the NBC app and NBC.com and other digital platforms.
In its place, NBC will premiere the 11th and final season of “Will & Grace” starting next Thursday, Oct. 24.

Starring Kal Penn as a former New York City Councilman who finds his calling in assisting immigrants in need of his help, “Sunnyside” debuted last month as the lowest-rated new show among the four major broadcast networks.
Touting the premiere episode’s growth in delayed viewing and its performance on social media, the network is hoping the show will continue to perform as a digital exclusive.

NBC has decided to kick its freshman comedy “Sunnyside” to its digital platforms and replace it in the schedule with the 11th and final season of “Will & Grace.”

NBC has also ordered an additional episode of “Sunnyside” to increase the original order of 10 episodes to 11, however, it now seems highly unlikely that “Sunnyside” will see another series beyond its first on any platform. The remaining seven episodes of “Sunnyside” will air weekly on the NBC App, NBC.com and other digital platforms. Five years ago, through the randomness of searching for an affordable apartment in New York City, I landed in a patch of western Queens known as Sunnyside.
I fell hard for the neighborhood’s Old World charms. Sturdy prewar brick apartment buildings with 10-foot ceilings and parquet floors. Bodegas and bars on every corner. Restaurants and specialty markets to die for. A homey community feel with plenty of kids and dogs running around and old-timers holding court on the plazas under the elevated 7 train stations along Queens Boulevard.
The single best thing about living here is the array of ethnicities and cultures that are packed into roughly 10 square blocks. An area that was once largely Irish and Italian now is home to immigrants from South Asia to South America and most points in between. There’s an undeniable energy that comes from being surrounded by so many languages, faiths and cultural traditions.

Kal Penn is an appealing actor whose airy, loose charisma has lately exceeded his luck: On TV in recent years, Penn has appeared on vexed series including “We Are Men,” “Battle Creek,” and “Designated Survivor.” Happily, on his new sitcom, “Sunnyside,” Penn seems to be porting in experience from a different part of his career — the time he spent working in President Barack Obama’s administration, in the Office of Public Engagement. That branch works, as its name would indicate, to keep the public engaged with the work of government. In “Sunnyside,” Penn makes the job literal, playing a disengaged former politician who takes on a new kind of constituent outreach. It’s a job that matches both his experience and his gifts, and a very promising pilot for NBC.

There are two things that Kal Penn loves: making people laugh and America. This is reflected in his résumé, which includes the successful sitcom How I Met Your Mother, the cult stoner comedy Harold and Kumar franchise (which we will get to later), and his work in the Obama administration as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. His newest venture, the NBC sitcom Sunnyside, puts a comedic spin on the very relevant topic of immigration and American citizenship — practically a happy marriage of his two favorite things.

Sunnyside, the new NBC comedy starring Kal Penn, follows Garrett Modi (Penn), the youngest New York City Councilman ever who was living the American Dream but gets lost in his way amidst the power and glamour of politics.
