Romance author Emily Henry now has five of her most recent novels set to be adapted for the big and small screens. Henry went on a rom-com writing spree that began with Beach Read, which came out in the summer of 2020. She has published a book a year since then, with People We Meet on Vacation coming out in 2021, Book Lovers arriving in 2022, Happy Place released in 2023 and Funny Story hitting shelves this year.
Three of Henry’s books received adaptation optioning deals for films, with two of them attaching directors. Starting in 2022, multiple studios made the decision to adapt various Emily Henry books into movies. The Writers’ and Actors’ strikes likely delayed any moves in casting, but a fourth novel has just been optioned by Jennifer Lopez’s production company for a television series adaptation at Netflix.

Funny Story has become the latest Emily Henry novel to get a feature film adaptation deal, and the author herself will adapt the book for the big screen.
Henry will write the script of her latest novel, which was published April 23 by Public Random House. Funny Story marks Henry’s fifth romantic comedy book in four years.
The story follows children’s librarian Daphne, who has just been broken up with by her fiancé Peter, who quickly moved on to his childhood best friend, Petra. Forced out of their living situation, Daphne takes up residence with Miles, Petra’s ex-boyfriend. The pair hatch a fake dating scheme to make their exes jealous at the wedding, but as with the popular trope, the pair’s shared desire for revenge could spark a whole new flame.

Warning! Major spoilers ahead for The Boys season 4, episode 6.
Eric Kripke clarifies that Butcher's hallucinations in The Boys season 4 are purely a result of his brain tumor and not the Compound-v he took in an attempt to cure himself. Kessler represents the darker parts of Butcher, while Becca represents his capacity for compassion. Homelander's dark plan to assassinate the president could result in Butcher leaning more towards his inner darkness as a means of stopping him.

Emily Henry fans had a field day last week when the author shared a St. Patrick’s day selfie of “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Normal People’s” Paul Mescal.
While Edebiri posted the original image to her Instagram, it was reposts from Henry and screenwriter Yulin Kuang that made fans start to assume that the actors may have been cast in one of the films being adapted from Henry’s romance books: “People We Meet on Vacation,” for which Kuang is writing the screenplay; “Beach Read,” with Kuang writing and directing; or “Book Lovers,” being developed by the company that produced Mescal’s “Aftersun.”
The posts came just months after Mescal said in an interview that he hoped to star in a rom-com with Edebiri sometime in the next five years.

Tango — the production-finance outfit behind Aftersun and Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story — will develop and produce the rom-com as a feature film. Girls and Modern Love writer Sarah Heyward is attached to adapt.
The book, which was published by Penguin Random House imprint Berkley, follows a literary agent, Nora, and a brooding book editor Charlie who run into each other during a summer holiday in North Carolina. Tyler Mitchell’s philosophy has always been “run to love”.
So when Film Victoria called him in early 2019 expressing admiration for the inaugural Impact accelerator program he ran with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer in the US, it was enough to plant the seed for an Australian version of the initiative.
“If someone loves what you are doing, you should embrace that,” he told If.
“We started talking and between Film Victoria, Screen Australia, and the states, there was tremendous support and a real partnership, not just financially, but with the mission we have.”
It’s a collaboration that will continue this year when Impact Australia returns in person following an inaugural virtual program in 2020.
Delivered in conjunction with Gentle Giant Media Group, Impact Australia 2 will pair local creators with leading screenwriters, or ‘shapers’, who over eight weeks will help them craft their project and prepare them for pitch day in front of buyers.

Facebook used its executive session at the TCA Summer Press tour to announce it has renewed the teen drama Skam Austin for a second season on Facebook Watch.
The show, a remake of the beloved Norwegian series Skam, offers an unfiltered look at the lives of American teenagers. The series follows four “loser” girls who form their own dance team, and it tackles the topical issues including popularity, slut-shaming, Islamophobia and relationships.
Skam Austin unfolds in real time and across Facebook’s platforms, with daily episodes airing at the time when events occur within the story line — say, a lunch scene that drops at noon — with follow-up posts on the characters’ Instagram profiles. Bonus material can be found on the show’s official Facebook page, such as text exchanges between characters.

The series, which takes its name from the lauded Norwegian series “Skam” (or “shame” in English) follows four unpopular girls from an Austin, Texas dance team as they deal with a myriad of issues: school cliques, having sex for the first time, racism, and balancing high school friendships. Back in December, Simon Fuller’s Xix Entertainment said it was making an English-language version of hit Scandi teen drama Shame (Skam). Today at Mipcom, Facebook’s Head of Global Creative Strategy, Ricky Van Veen, said the company is teaming with Fuller to bring the series to its newly-launched Facebook Watch.
The show, which debuted on Nrk platforms in 2015, uses narratives in real time with unknown actors and scripts that are geared to a 16 year-old audience with a focus on teen issues. The show scored huge ratings among young and adult audiences in Scandinavia, growing its weekly audience from 24K to 1.262M (Norway has a total population of 5M) and outperformed many TV and streaming primetime hits in the territory. Episode length varies from 17-50 minutes.
Van Veen today said the teen drama is “built for social.” The U.S. production is being run from Fuller’s Xix in LA.

When Girls began its fifth season, I feared it was struggling at least as much as its characters in the transition from carefree youth to mature adulthood. The early episodes had their moments, particularly our first glimpse of Shoshanna's new life in Japan, but the spark of the series' first few seasons wasn't quite there as Hannah and her friends fumbled around with new jobs, new relationships, and new responsibilities. (Season spoilers coming up just as soon as there's a pretty picture of me in the Financial Times round-up of books of the year...) But sometime around either the fifth episode (split between Hannah going on a spa retreat with her mom and another Shoshanna Tokyo interlude) or the sixth (which somehow made a spotlight on the usually loathsome Marnie into one of the show's best episodes ever), that newfound maturity turned out to be a feature, not a bug.

While Girls could have easily turned any college campus into the University of Iowa for their fourth season, the show was hoping for authenticity by getting the real deal on film. Sadly it was not to be, even though Girls writer Sarah Heyward is herself a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. "While we are pleased that the Iowa Writers’ Workshop is receiving national attention and that our graduate is doing well in her career, our general practice is to not allow filming, due to potential disruption to campus,” university spokesman Tom Moore confirmed. On the bright side, the request indicates that Hannah will likely attend the University of Iowa rather than talking herself out of enrollment in favor of, say, getting back together with Adam. Plus, it will make the second episode where he runs barefoot and shirtless to see her even more epic than the first.

The article below contains spoilers for "Incidentals," the February 23rd, 2014 episode of "Girls." Adam (Adam Driver) is headed to Broadway, and Hannah (Lena Dunham), who just a few weeks ago was gentle pointing out to her semi-feral boyfriend that his life was lacking professional direction, is thrown into a tailspin of self-doubt. Blame Patti LuPone. "Incidentals," which is directed by Richard Shepard ("Dom Hemingway") and written by Dunham and Sarah Heyward, highlights an underlying truth in the pair's relationship and the nature of fame. It's one thing for them to be unconventional and broke together, but artistic success is going to put him in a different light than it would her. "He is so funny-looking," she said to LuPone after being told Adam was likely "going to start fucking everybody in the building," and was in turn reassured that even the Elephant Man got laid thanks to his star status.

Girls Season 3, Episode 8: “Incidentals”
Written by Lena Dunham and Sarah Heyward
Directed by Richard Shepard
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm on HBO
With the exception of the storyline involving his sister, Adam (Adam Driver) has been on the margins of Girls Season Three. Much of the focus has been on Hannah’s (Lena Dunham) writing career and Marnie’s (Allison Williams) complete breakdown, which means that characters, like him, Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) have been relegated to the sidelines. Lena Dunham and Sarah Heyward make him and Jessa part of contrasting stories featuring a pair of very different guest stars. They also do another good job of bringing the main and guest cast together for hilarious and insightful interactions. The announcement of Adam’s casting in a Broadway play puts a lot of pressure on Hannah, and she actually weathers it quite well. Maybe she is growing as a character.

Lena Dunham's parents are helping their daughter become "the voice of a generation."
According to Capital New York's article about the "Girls" writers room, Laurie Simmons and Carroll Dunham sometimes help pen the Emmy-winning HBO series.
"Our writers this year include Judd Apatow, Jenni Konner, Lena Dunham, Bruce Eric Kaplan, Murray Miller, Paul Simms, Sarah Heyward and, occasionally, Lena’s parents," an HBO spokesperson said. "We are very excited to get started on Season 3."
This isn't the first time Dunham's parents have been involved in the series. In a Season 2 episode, Dunham's mother (Simmons) played a woman working at an art gallery who interviewed Marnie (Allison Williams).
"She kind of uses a shorthand with me that’s like, 'Mom, that sucks. Mom, be quiet. Mom, scream.' You know, she just kind of shouts commands at me that she really wouldn’t dare to do with any other actor,...

“What does cocaine make you feel like? It makes you feel like having more cocaine.” – George Carlin
Coke is the ideal drug of Girls. When Hannah excitedly enters a pretentious internet publication’s spartan offices after hearing they’ll pay for contributions, she takes with her an eagerness to write about any and all new experiences. (Well, except maybe having a threesome.) So when she’s asked to write about doing cocaine, she sees it as yet another opportunity to transgress and excavate. Why not?
One of Girls’s most persistent themes is that of the avoidance, or utter denial, of consequence. For Hannah, coke is just an unexplored country, as well as a potential launchpad for thousands of (paid!

This week’s episode, “Bad Friend,” featured a doll standing watch over a comically traumatic sex-scene-as-art-piece; cocaine being clichédly/grossly snorted off a nightclub toilet seat; and several chemically induced, dubiously advised confessions that may alter the fabic of connections in the lives of Hannah, Marnie and their circle of pals. (Or who knows? Once everyone comes down from their highs, perhaps not.)
