Growing up in rural North Carolina, Michael discovered the world of voiceover in his early teens and lent his voice to many video games and cartoons from his home studio. He moved to Chicago to further his acting study with classes at The Second City, which quickly led him to Los Angeles to start his on-camera career at the age of 18.
A co-star role on MTV's Awkward. (2011) led to a recurring regular role on MTV's hit series Teen Wolf (2011). Other television credits include Pure Genius (2016), Supergirl (2015), The InBetween (2019), and S.W.A.T. (2017). Michael had his stage debut as Jonny in Berkeley Repertory Theater's "Let The Right One In" in 2023, directed by two-time Tony and Oliver Award-winning director John Tiffany alongside Oliver Award-winning movement director Steven Hoggett.
Michael continues his work behind the mic. He's the protagonist of Annapurna Interactive's The Artful Escape (2021), which won a BAFTA Games Award. He's the series lead of Netflix's animated series Zak Storm (2016). He provided his voice and motion capture performance for Marvel's Avengers (2020). He recently starred in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (2023) based on the iconic 1974 horror film. Michael also frequently provides his voice for anime dubs. He voiced a recurring role in the critically acclaimed series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019), and he can be heard as the protagonist of Netflix's Akuma Kun (2023).
Michael's work in VO sparked a passion for singing. He recently lent his voice to Well-Versed (2023), an animated series from First Lady Jill Biden that teaches children about civics in short-form music videos. A vocal tenor with an emphasis on singer-songwriter pop, Michael plays guitar and released his first music video, Michael Johnston: Gravity (2024).
Above all this, Michael is a certified goofball.
