Seafarers are superstitious folk. It’s unsurprising, given the ocean’s volatile nature, that sailors would look for omens to embrace or avoid in the hopes of a safe voyage. It’s a failure to properly honor nautical superstition just before a shipwreck that kickstarts Beacon, a paranoid psychological thriller that traps two strangers together on an almost inaccessible island. Unreliable narrators create constant shifts in allegiances as superstition creeps further into the mix, but the ultra-lean plotting and horror elements leave the psychodrama drifting at sea.
Beacon introduces Emily (Julia Goldani Telles), a young woman circumnavigating the globe on a solo sail using old-school techniques. She hails from a long line of seafarers, though she’s the first woman in her family to continue the tradition. Considering the common nautical superstition involving women on board, that sets her off on the wrong foot. Then she eats her offering to the sea god Neptune.

Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that Lakeshore Records will release the Hellraiser (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on October 7 as well. And today we’re debuting an exclusive track from the score!
Ben Lovett composed the score for Hulu’s brand new Hellraiser movie, and the track you can listen to down below takes you deep inside the Puzzle Box. It’s titled, fittingly, “Blood Box.”
Lovett tells Bloody Disgusting, “How does one approach music for a Hellraiser film without the outsized influence of Christopher Young’s original score? It’s one of the most famous pieces of music in the genre and for David and myself, part of the fabric of what makes a Hellraiser movie. We were very fortunate that Mr. Young gave...

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Four years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. There are 37 shows on the list this year, which is down by four from last year. There were 35 in 2019, 33 in 2018, and 25 in 2017. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 13.

Before signing on for the just-concluded third season of “The Girlfriend Experience,” writer-director Anja Marquardt was working on multiple projects set in what she calls “future-facing worlds.” Immersed in technology-driven stories to the point where she was “living and breathing” data, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence, the filmmaker behind “She’s Lost Control” is still quick to call herself a neophyte.
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t really have a background in tech at all, but I’ve always been really curious,” Marquardt said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m a really research-driven filmmaker at heart. I really enjoy the process of unveiling for myself a world that has nothing to do with my own, [which] involves lots of research and seeking inspiration in other works of art and reading lots of stuff, like scientific papers, but also interviewing advisors.”

The latest incarnation of Starz’s Steven Soderbergh-created anthology series The Girlfriend Experience sees its main character Iris (Julia Goldani Telles), a neuroscience student, transported to London and into the world of deep tech and artificial intelligence. Along the way, she discovers that her side gig as an escort has some spooky parallels with her day job developing and researching AI for a tech company.
Creator, co-executive producer, director and writer Anja Marquardt explained the draw of bringing the AI concept into this show. “It’s been a long journey, very interesting,” she said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event. “I was able to Trojan Horse a lot of my own interests into this third installment, and there was a tremendous freedom to start a new chapter. I brought AI, neuroscience, future-facing science – all this stuff was in my orbit these past few years.

Heading into its third season, The Girlfriend Experience is one of the most unique shows on TV, each series so different the last. This latest series, helmed by Anja Marquardt (She’s Lost Control) is arguably the most ambitious to date, particularly from a visual perspective, and so needless to say we were thrilled to speak to the director, as well as the show’s leading star, Julia Goldani Telles.
Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below, as we discuss where this new season has headed, and on their respective research into not only the world of sex work, but also the tech scene in London. And of course we talk about how helpful Steven Soderbergh was during this project, as it turns out the exec producer still lends a hand to a show he holds very dearly.

The anthology series is back with the third season and it’s as stylish and slick as its predecessors in the high-class world of escorts. This time around tech and data play a major role in a series where style over substance is a monotonous factor in its opening episodes.
Season 3 is set in the London tech scene, Iris (Julia Goldani Telles), a neuroscience major, begins to explore the transactional world of The Girlfriend Experience and quickly learns that client sessions provide her with a compelling edge in the tech world.
By day, Iris is the highly intelligent, glasses-wearing, tech nerd newly hired by the London tech company Ngm. Setting about gathering data of human behaviour and their desires of what they say they want and what they really want from a relationship into workable algorithms to sell off to Dating apps. By night, she becomes the sexy and sultry Cassie,...

Data. Desire. Deceit.
In the first season not written or directed by creators Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan, “The Girlfriend Experience” Season 3 is dealing with at least two themes familiar to the Starz anthology series, yet the latest twist is also its most intriguing. Data acquisition, accumulation, and analysis are massive fields, growing to digitize just about every facet of our lives, and Season 3 creator Anja Marquardt’s story posits one more: “What if desire could be quantified?”
Unlike “Black Mirror,” “Soulmates,” or other TV attempts to turn instinctual feelings into a salable algorithm, “The Girlfriend Experience” is working in R&d, not science fiction. Season 3 isn’t about what happens when an app from the future picks your life partner. It’s about how that app could (or perhaps couldn’t) be built. Marquardt’s slick direction makes the thoughtful psychological studies she writes into one woman’s quest...

Spoilers Ahead: Showtime’s The Affair finished its five season run tonight, with the series’ co-creator and guiding creative voice Sarah Treem making her directorial debut on the finale. Treem took 90 minutes to stitch back together the fractured Solloway clan, as the philandering Noah (Dominic West) and long suffering wife Helen (Maura Tierney) find a way back to each other. This was something that seemed nearly impossible after his affair with the desperately unhappy Alison (Ruth Wilson), who found her way into the arms of the bored wannabe bestselling author Noah. He left his own wife and their four children and a highly unexpected adventure began, one that traced the multi-generational ripples created by such a tumultuous event.

I turned it down very slightly. And it didn’t...
Showing at this year’s Frightfest and being picked up by the Frightfest Presents label, The Wind has been well received at festivals across the globe. The last film I remember being based around the wind was The Happening, so The Wind doesn’t have much competition in those stakes.
The immediate impact The Wind had on me was that incredible score. It lead to this brief exchange with my partner after the first ten minutes or so of the movie:
My partner: “It’s a bit loud. I’ve got my headphones on and I can still hear it.”
Me: “But can you hear that score? I love it already. It’s amazing!”
My partner: “Just turn it down.”

Feature debut from director Emma Tammi and writer Teresa Sutherland, The Wind is a period horror set in the Western frontier of late 1800s America. Lizzie (Caitlin Gerard) and her husband Isaac (Ashley Zukerman) are a married couple eking out a frugal life on the plains when another couple move into the abandoned farm nearby. Emma (Julia Goldani Telles) and Gideon (Dylan McTee) are city folk attempting to start a new life - hopelessly unprepared, they begin to rely on Lizzie and her husband for support. This intrusion deepens the already troubled Lizzie's state of mind; she believes the area to be haunted by a 'prairie demon', a malicious spirit which travels on the wind.

The Affair is finally drawing to a close.
The Affair Season 5 will chronicle the aftermath of last season’s horrific events and find the characters coming to terms with the consequences of their choices.
They'll make the realization that if they really want to change their futures, they must first face the past.
Helen (Maura Tierney) begins the season involved in an intoxicating new affair with a charismatic movie star (guest star Claes Bang), who offers to give her everything she’s been missing.
Noah (Dominic West) meanwhile has to swallow his pride and his jealousy and step in to take care of his family in her absence.
The Affair Season 5 Premiere Date Revealed - Who's Not Returning?
That's right, as we imagined all along, it appears Noah deeply regrets leaving Helen and their life behind.
He scratched an itch with Alison that tore apart his family and set him on a new trajectory.
