"From the director of the acclaimed Brazilian horror film History Of The Occult, A Mother’S Embrace takes place in 1996 and follows a young firefighter and her team who are called to help an old folks' home that is at risk of flooding during the worst storm to ever hit Rio de Janeiro.

As they try their best to evacuate the elderly, the firefighter soon finds that something sinister is lurking beneath the surface, and the residents are not as innocent as they first seemed. Entangled in their web, she must fight through her own traumatic past to escape."

The film stars Marjorie Estiano, Chandelly Braz, Javier Drolas, Reynaldo Machado, Val Perré, Angela Rabello, Helena Varvaki, Rafael Canedo, Maria Volpe, Mel Nunes, and Thelmo Fernandes.

U.K.-based Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide rights to the supernatural horror film “A Mother’s Embrace” from director Cristian Ponce.

Set in 1996, the story follows Ana, a young firefighter responding to an emergency at a retirement home during Rio de Janeiro’s worst storm. As her team attempts to evacuate the elderly residents, Ana uncovers sinister undercurrents and must confront her own past trauma to escape.

The film marks Ponce’s second feature, following “History of the Occult,” which won awards at Mar del Plata. He co-wrote the screenplay with Gabriela Capello and André Pereira. Pereira and Mariana Muniz produced through their Lupa Filmes banner.

Brazilian actor Marjorie Estiano, known for her International Emmy-nominated role in Globo’s “Under Pressure” and Locarno winner “Good Manners,” stars alongside Chandelly Braz and Javier Drolas.

Ponce said: “For me, the idea of evil based on the presumption of good was very important.

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the set of the Brazilian horror film The Trace We Leave Behind (a.k.a. O Rastro), which didn’t quite get the big international release it was originally supposed to, but did turn out to be a cool movie. You can read my review at This Link. Brazil’s Lupa Filmes has revealed first-look images for Cristian Ponce’s upcoming survival horror “A Mother’s Embrace” – co-produced by Morbido Group’s Pablo Guisa Koestinger – ahead of its bow at Cannes’ Fantastic Pavilion, where genre industry professionals will also be treated to the sneak peak of the trailer.

Previously behind animated webseries “The Kirlian Frequency”, acquired by Netflix, in 2020 Ponce directed big breakout “History of the Occult,” which marked his feature debut. The film was described as the highest-rated horror movie of 2021 on Letterboxd’s Year in Review roundup, as voted by users of the film rating social platform.

Netflix has shared details on its next Brazilian original series, “O Cangaceiro do Futuro,” a comedy caper starring Edmilson Filho and Chandelly Braz which will hit the platform later this year.

Glaz, which previously collaborated with Netflix on “Get the Goat,” produces the series, which was created by Halder Gomes, a writer-director-producer who has worked many times with “O Cangaceiro do Futuro” lead Filho, achieving popular success in both theatrical features and TV.

Filming has already wrapped on the series, which shot in the rural town of Quixadá, in Ceará, Northeast Brazil, before wrapping in São Paulo. The show’s shoot and incorporation of talent such as Gomes, from Caerá capital Fortaleza, are examples of Netflix’s “goal to expand to all regions of Brazil,” as Elisabetta Zenatti, VP, Brazilian Content, announced last November.
