Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for what could be the last time. On Monday, Paramount revealed the official title for “Mission: Impossible 8,” which is slated for theaters in May. The title, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” along with the general “it has all come down to this” vibe of the trailer, may lead you to believe this will be the final “M:i” film, but that’s not necessarily the case. Cruise doesn’t seem to be ready to hang up his running shoes yet.
While the fate of the franchise is a little bit up in the air, there’s no question about whether or not 62-year-old Cruise has still got it. In the teaser trailer that reveals the title, Cruise is seen sprinting through multiple locations, in his underwear grappling with a knife-wielding assassin, and hanging off the wing of a single engine plane. He...

When Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opened last year, it was widely deemed a financial disappointment, even after earning $570.6 million worldwide.
Not helping matters, of course, was the fact its budget ballooned to a reported $291 million, a staggering sum which is thought to have done irreparable damage to Tom Cruise's relationship with Paramount Pictures.
The studio dropped the "Dead Reckoning Part Two" subtitle from the sequel a while ago - likely to distance Mission: Impossible 8 from its predecessor - and we now know that it's instead going to be called Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.
That was revealed on a cool new poster which has since been accompanied by an emotional teaser trailer reflecting on Tom Cruise's incredible legacy as Ethan Hunt. "Everything you are, everything you've done... has come to this." Paramount Pictures has unveiled the epic teaser trailer for the grand finale in the M:i series now officially titled Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Apparently they've agreed to finally admit that this will be the last Ethan Hunt movie (hence the title), even though there were rumors that Tom Cruise didn't want to say this yet. The 8th entry in the long running Mission Impossible franchise - and the conclusion to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One from 2023. Plot details are still a secret - it's obvious Hunt needs to stop a dangerous weapon from destroying the world and will go to the submarine to find out more. Mission: Impossible 8 has been given the official title Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – and there’s a trailer to prove it.
We’ve been following the production story of Mission: Impossible 8 for a while now here at Film Stories. The film’s price tag has grown considerably due to the small matters of a global pandemic and extensive Hollywood strikes, but we have a feeling there’s a good reason for Paramount splurging on the latest sequel.
The studio has released the first trailer, and revealed that its full title is now Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The word “final” feels… well, final. Could this truly be the end of Ethan Hunt?
It’s all very dramatic, and eagle-eyed fans will notice that the trailer shows a number of previous Mission: Impossible locations, only adding to the inescapable feeling of finality. Should we get our hankies ready?...

Good things come to those who wait, and we’ve been waiting a long, long time for “Mission: Impossible 8” to get a title. Well, we got that and more on Monday. (Ethan Hunt is an Army alum — Happy Veterans Day to all!) If you need a catch up on the previous films, here’s IndieWire’s ranking of the “Mission: Impossible” movies.
In the new film’s teaser trailer, Hunt (Tom Cruise) can be seen sprinting through a variety of landscapes and hardscapes — you simply do not mess with the Cruise formula. At one point, Hunt is running after an airplane that he presumably catches. At another he’s knife-fighting in his underwear; if you weren’t already reminded, from him rappelling into the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony, Tom Cruise is in his 60s.

Ethan Hunt is back ... for the final time? The trailer for the next "Mission: Impossible" film is here, and it brings with it a new title that raises an eyebrow or two. The flick is called "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," and the word "final" in there seems to imply this will be the last adventure for the Impossible Mission Force. At one point, this movie was going to be called "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two," as the previous entry was "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One." But "Dead Reckoning Part One" underperformed at the box office, and studio Paramount quickly dropped the "Part One" from the title by the time the film hit digital and Blu-ray.
The title may be different, but "The Final Reckoning" will still be a continuation of the previous film, as "Dead Reckoning" ended on a cliffhanger with villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) getting away.

Angela Bassett joined the Mission: Impossible franchise as CIA Director Erika Sloane in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The actress was slated to reprise the role for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, but was forced to drop out due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Thankfully, the Mission: Impossible franchise isn’t done with Angela Bassett.
While speaking with Variety on the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One red carpet, director Christopher McQuarrie spilled a few details on how Angela Bassett would have fit into the new film, while also teasing that we’ll be seeing her again. “It’s interesting, she was going to be the head of the CIA, she was going to be in that room with all the other heads of the intelligence community that you meet,” McQuarrie said. “And we’re not done with Angela Bassett.” McQuarrie continued, “Angela is too fabulous. Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell in ‘Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One’ from Paramount Pictures and Skydance
Naming the big bad “The Entity” is a dead giveaway that plot isn’t going to matter as much as the spectacular action sequences in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know Tom Cruise has put his body through hell to pull off the seventh Mi film’s insane action scenes. Cruise’s efforts pay off big time in one of the best entries in the blockbuster franchise.
But about that plot… Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is tasked with recovering a key that controls The Entity, an artificial intelligence that has become sentient. The Entity began with controlling social media and moved on to attacking governments across the globe. But that’s small potatoes compared to its ultimate goal: world domination.

Tom Cruise is used to going to extremes to thrill audiences with the bombastic action of the Mission: Impossible franchise, but how long can he cheat death by repeatedly playing MI6 agent Ethan Hunt? If Cruise has his way, he’ll laugh at the Grim Reaper’s boney face alongside the withering visage of Father Time by defying the odds for years to come. Forever the goal-oriented actor, Cruise says he wants to walk in Harrison Ford’s shadow by playing Ethan Hunt until he’s the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny actor’s age.
“Harrison Ford is a legend,” Cruise told The Sydney Morning Herald while walking the red carpet on the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere. “I’ve got twenty years to catch up with him.” While Cruise has played Ethan Hunt for over twenty years, Ford still plays Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr.

When it comes to screen tests, most involve the actor(s) performing a scene to the camera. Some, like the recent Superman: Legacy screen tests, also involve full costume and makeup, but when it comes to the Mission: Impossible franchise, they want to make sure you can keep up with the action. Hayley Atwell revealed to The Telegraph that her screen test for Grace in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was two hours of stunt choreography.
Hayley Atwell performed her Mission: Impossible screen test with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood, which she said involved “two hours of stunt choreography just to see where my natural abilities lay.” Atwell continued, “We did an unarmed combat sequence and mixed martial arts to see if I was someone who could grapple and trap or someone who was more into high kicks. [It’s to] ascertain my natural style.“

The newest adventure of Ethan Hunt and his Imf comrades will be making its way into theaters in a couple of weeks. Recently, Tom Cruise and his frequent collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, are championing the theater-going practice and good ol’ fashion cinematic experiences as they encourage audiences to see both Oppenheimer and Barbie to support theaters. This is in addition to their determination to give movie-goers the most thrilling entertainment for their latest outing, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The new featurette takes you behind the scenes of another giant set piece involving a little-known extreme sport called Speedflying. It’s both exactly as it sounds and exactly what you’d expect from Cruise and Company.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” director Christopher McQuarrie made headlines at the start of June after revealing to Empire magazine that Tom Cruise’s insane motorcycle stunt was shot on the first day of filming. The stunt, billed as the most death-defying one of Cruise’s acting career thus far, finds Cruise riding a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff and then parachuting to safety while in free fall.
“Doing that on day one gave us all the time in the world to understand why he [Ethan] was doing what he was doing,” McQuarrie told the publication. “If we sat around and tried to figure out these movies the old-fashioned way, you’d never find it, simply because it’s such a living, breathing thing.”
For Tom Cruise, however, there was a far more practical reason for putting the motorcycle stunt on the first day of the “Mission: Impossible 7” shoot.

Tom Cruise talked emotionally about his love for big-screen movies and dove deep into the philosophy of global cinema during an interview with Deadline on the red carpet Monday in Rome where he attended the world premiere of Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
The event took place on the Spanish Steps of the Italian capital, where much of the latest franchise installment takes place, and fitting because of the value Cruise places on overseas markets for his movies, saying, getting emotional as he described the “artform” and how it “bridges walls, it breaks them down and allows people to be able to share that kind of commonality and experience.”

The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere is happening in Rome this afternoon, with stars, filmmakers, and press gathering to celebrate the latest chapter of the action-packed blockbuster franchise. After posing on a red carpet along the Spanish Steps, Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie began fielding questions from excited press members. Speaking with Deadline, McQuarrie commented on the likelihood of directing a film in the James Bond franchise one day.
“I like watching James Bond movies,” McQuarrie said when asked if he’d be game to help create a film in the famed 007 franchise. “The fun of those is going and getting to actually sit down and watch them, and not worry about whether or not I messed it up. I just enjoy watching them.” Adding to the conversation, McQuarrie says writing the movie and directing might not sweeten the pot. “That would come in handy,” McQuarrie said about writing the film.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One writer/director Christopher McQuarrie describes the new Mi film’s Rome chase scene as more ambitious and unpredictable than any car stunt they’ve previously shot. The two-minute behind-the-scenes featurette shows just how incredibly difficult the car chase was to shoot, especially given that it was all done practically.
“It all comes down to one thing: How do we involve the audience? I just want to give them that thrill,” explains franchise star Tom Cruise.
Part of lengthy chase scene involves Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell handcuffed together while they’re being pursued, which meant that Cruise had to drive one-handed. “Tom driving and drifting one-handed through the streets of Rome… That was a day I’ll never forget,” says Atwell.
