Nyx UK presents eight chilling channel premieres in July, headed up on Tuesday July 16 at 9pm, with Uwe Boll’s controversial retro-slasher Seed (2007), a divisive portrait of a serial killer which delves into the macabre and grotesque, offering a grim exploration of vengeance and the human capacity for cruelty.
At first you’ll be afraid, you’ll be petrified! On Friday July 5, 9pm, Nyx UK also premieres Renaud Gauthier’s ‘goriously’ humorous Discopath (2013), in which a seemingly ordinary man turns his local Seventh Heaven nightclub into a splatter Disco Inferno.
Other primetime channel premieres include the captivating 1972 Italian giallo Amuck, Reeker 2, Dave Payne’s 2008 prequel to Reeker, Sonja O’Hara’s 2022 horror thriller Mid-century, Black Circle (2018), a stunning Mexican-Swedish horror thriller directed by Adrián García Bogliano. and the Venezuelan supernatural thriller, The House At The End Of Time (2013), directed by Alejandro Hidalgo, broadcast on Fri July 26, 9pm.

Despite rocking a killer title and being so deeply bathed in 80s slasher-isms that it might nearly drown, Aquaslash is the perfect example of a horror that just can’t seem to find its groove. Because through all its embracing of those classic summer teen movie tropes, and the hilariously outdated sexual politics that come with them (even American Pie fans might think this one’s a bit much), what really sinks Renaud Gauthier’s Canadian genre romp in the end is its payoff, or lack there of.
Taking more than just a leaf from the book of Friday the 13th and its fellow teen-focussed horrors of the early 80s, Aquaslash finds a graduating high school class assuming control of a nearby waterpark, for a no-holds-barred Spring Break-style boozefest. The teachers deal drugs, the jocks and greasy rockers battle it out over who’s more macho, and every girl in...

The Wet Valley Water Park welcomes high school students celebrating their graduation in all their unleashed libido glory. However, in the midst of the ribald romping revels, a black-gloved murderer is tinkering with the water slides and sabotaging the swimming pools.

Looks like I just found out what killed disco – and no, it wasn’t the Kiss song “I Was Made For Loving You,” despite the rock God’s momentary pit stop in funky town. Nope, writer/director Renaud Gauthier exacts sweet revenge on one of music’s most polarizing fads by turning high pitched voices and thumping bass lines into murderous tools of destruction – I give you Discopath. Yes, like the words “Psychopath” and “Disco” mashed together, because we all knew heavy metal wasn’t Satan’s soundtrack, but instead the musical stylings that drove people to wear roller skates and snort cocaine more violently than Rob Ford during a visit to Colombia. At what point does the Bee Gee’s song “Stayin’ Alive” become a warning instead of dance anthem?

Last month we took a trip to Nottingham, England's cinephile haven Broadway Cinema for four days of eclectic genre programming at the 2013 Mayhem Horror Film Festival. Check in right here for a look at some of the sights and reviews from the East Midlands' premier horror fest.
The festival kicked off on Thursday 31st October with a special screening of director Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Puffball, taking place in the special environs of St. Mary's Church with Roeg himself in attendance to introduce and officially open this year's event.
Topping off the evening was Vincenzo Natali's underwhelming Haunter (review here).

I’ve said it many times before and I’ve no doubt I’ll say it many times again, but Canadians know how to make damn good horror flicks and guess what? They also know how to do great retro-grindhouse flicks too! Yes Discopath, the tale of a man turned to murder by the beat, is another fantastic genre flick from the land that brought us He Knows You’re Alone, My Bloody Valentine and the more recent Antisocial.
Writer/director Renaud Gauthier made his name as a music video director, so it should come as no surprise that music features heavily in his first feature film, Discopath, an epic tale of trauma and turntables:

The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. There are also loads of short film programs featuring work by local filmmakers.

If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. And as if those weren’t enough, this years retro screening is the awesome, and formerly banned in the UK, Mark of the Devil, from director Michael Armstrong.
This years London event is scheduled for Saturday 26th October from 6.30pm and will be located for the third year at the Vue, West End. Tickets (costing...

The 6th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival might be beginning on the unluckiest day of the year — Friday the 13th — but the residents of Tucson are lucky for this 9-night extravaganza of wild and wooly cinema from all over the globe. The fest runs Sept. 13-21 at The Screening Room and other locations.
Opening Night films include the retro, music-fueled slasher flick Discopath by Renaud Gauthier and the Internet-based bloodbath Truth Or Dare, directed by scream queen Jessica Cameron making her filmmaking debut. The last film of the fest on the 21st is the cryptic post-apocalyptic thriller Dust of War, directed by Andrew Kightlinger.
The rest of the fest includes mind-bending fiction flicks like the cult-ish Fateful Findings by Neil Breen; the 90-minute, one-shot noir Worm by Andrew Bowser; Zach Clark’s twisted holiday movie White Reindeer; Drew Tobia’s surreal See You Next Tuesday; as well as challenging documentaries...

Marks the second consecutive year a Takashi Miike film has opened Montreal’s genre film festival.
Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw, which screened in competition at Cannes, is to open the 17th edition of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival (July 18 - August 6).
Miike’s crime thriller receives its North American premiere at Fantasia and continues the long relationship between the director and festival.
Last year, Fantasia opened with Miike’s For Love’s Sake and the festival’s 1997 screening of Fudoh marked the first time a film by the director had ever been shown in North America.
The festival will also host the world premiere of 24 Exposures, from mumblecore director Joe Swanberg. The film stars Adam Wingard as a fetish photographer whose models begin to turn up dead while Simon Barrett plays a cop tasked with investigating him.
Wingard and Barrett are the director-screenwriter duo behind You’re Next and A Horrible Way To Die. Fantasia...
