Actor and producer Yara Shahidi has signed with Objectively Good Management (Ogm) for representation.

Shahidi is best known for starring in ABC’s “Black-ish” and its spinoff “Grown-ish.” Shahidi also executive produced the Freeform show, which wrapped up its six-season run in May, under the 7th Sun Productions banner she runs with her business partner and mother Keri Salter-Shahidi. 7th Sun Productions is signed to a multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature, which expanded in 2022 with the addition of a collaboration with Onyx Collective.

Even in a world where unrealistic photo filters have messed with our heads, Joey King (“A Family Affair”) wouldn’t be considered anything less than pretty with her lagoon-blue eyes and youthful complexion. But in the realm of “Uglies,” director McG’s (“Charlie’s Angels”) halfhearted screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 young-adult novel, her character Tally Youngblood’s objective attractiveness is irrelevant. That’s because being pretty means something entirely different in the reality that she lives, one that exists several hundred years after the demise of our own.

In that unnamed future, everyone at the age of 16 mandatorily goes through a surgical procedure to become their best-looking selves—a coming-of-age day as spiritual as getting one’s period or being celebrated at a teenage-centric religious custom. Until then, you’re stuck in an educational institution with the rest of “the uglies.”

I think it’s fair to say film critics everywhere owe the YA genre an apology. Films about teens in sci-fi and fantasy settings who radicalize, organize, and tear down dystopian empires may be a little hokey and repetitive, but in retrospect, spending decades telling young people it’s their responsibility to be politically active and dismantle broken, oppressive social systems might have laid some positive groundwork. I’ll happily sit through hackneyed junk like “Divergent” and “The Host” and “The Darkest Minds” if it means one day their target audience will actually rise up and fix our broken health care system and repeal all the bigoted anti-transgender laws.

What I will not do is settle for McG’s “Uglies,” the latest YA dystopia yarn, based on a series of books by Scott Westerfeld. It’s a boring and disturbingly ill-conceived motion picture about a future where humanity tore itself apart,...

A new week is here and with it comes a few new movies and shows to Netflix. The new additions this week include a new season of a Netflix original, a new movie based on a book series, and a new season of a Netflix reality show.

First up this week is Emily in Paris season 4 part 2! The second half of the latest season starts streaming on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024 and will pick up where the first half left off. Emily seems to have her life figured out, and she's even chosen a dude, but everyone else in her life is not fairing so well. But there is still drama in store for Emily. Gary Coleman’s life and death are getting the documentary treatment in Peacock’s Gary, premiering Thursday, Aug. 29.

The 90-minute program “sheds a new light on the star’s life and explores the controversy surrounding his tragic death at the age of 42,” reads the official description. “Viewers will get insight into Coleman’s lifelong illness and depression, his financial troubles, tumultuous marriage, and his heartbreaking demise.”

However, becoming “pretty” can lead to sinister things, or so it’s teased in the just-released trailer for the Netflix film, Uglies.

The film, adapted from the 2005 sci-fi novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, is set in a futuristic world where citizens undergo cosmetic surgery once they turn 16 to turn “pretty” and join the rest of society. However, protagonist Tally (King) learns the exterior is hiding the dark secrets going on internally and embarks on a journey to save her friend who runs away and fights against the society.

King and Outer Banks star Chase Stokes star alongside Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmin Lee and Laverne Cox.

McG directs from a screenplay by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor and Whit Anderson. John Davis, Jordan Davis, Robyn Meisinger, McG and Mary Viola produce.

Almost 20 years after Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series debuted with the first titular novel in the quartet, am Uglies movie adaptation of the science fiction series is on the way.

The futuristic society in which these books are set contains a cosmetic surgery as a right of passage. The compulsory procedure, which is imposed on 16-year-olds, aims to rid people of physical differences by applying an ideal standard of beauty to all faces.

The “Kissing Booth” trilogy’s alum and “The Act” breakout star leads “Uglies,” set in a world where teens are tracked down and forced to undergo plastic surgery to be their most “perfect” selves.
