Note: The following contains major spoilers for the “Uglies” ending.
“Uglies” is now streaming on Netflix and it certainly sets the stage for at least one sequel, if not two (the book series it’s based on is a trilogy after all). But will it happen? Well, director McG sure hopes so, because his plans are all “perfectly laid out.”
Based on Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel of the same name, “Uglies” takes place in a dystopian future society where every single person gets an operation at 16 years old to become the perfect version of themselves. That means enhanced looks, enhanced abilities, personalities, everything you can think of. Post-surgery, people are what’s known as “pretties.”
The operation is presented as something everyone gets to do but Tally Youngblood (Joey King) eventually comes to learn that it is, in fact, not a gift, and it’s certainly not optional.

Uglies Fans Believe Tally's Endgame Is Not Part of Her Canon Love Triangle - Main Image
Fans of the newest dystopian flick on Netflix are convinced that Tally's endgame is not in the canonical love triangle she's stuck in. According to Uglies fans, Tally's on-screen chemistry lies best with a newfound friend in the Smoke.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Netflix's Uglies, so proceed with caution.
Who Does Tally End Up With in Uglies? Fans Don't Believe in the Love Triangle
In the original novel series by Scott Westerfeld, Tally (played by Joey King) is stuck in a love triangle between David (Keith Powers) from the "Pretties" rebellion, The Smoke, and leader of the Crims, Zane, who has yet to be introduced in the adaptation.
Considering how dystopian romances go, Tally ending up with David makes the most sense. However, the fans who have seen (and read) Uglies beg to differ.

After languishing in production hell for nearly a decade, Scott Westerfield’s young adult dystopian fantasy novel Uglies has received a cinematic adaptation produced by Netflix. Revolving around a dystopian future where enforcing standards of physical beauty has turned out to be a way to mitigate human conflicts and discrimination, the movie boasts a stacked cast comprising some familiar and some new faces. Being honest, the majority of the characters of the movie are presented as generic and uninteresting, which contributes to an overall forgettable experience. Still, a handful of well-written, well-acted character portrayals turn out to be saving grace at the end.

We open on a world bathed in concrete gray. There’s a powerful government, a postapocalyptic class system with a telling name, and an unassuming teenager primed to start a worldwide revolution. Sound familiar? That’s because it’s the underpinning of most popular dystopian young adult franchises, including Uglies, a mid-aughts novel series by Scott Westerfeld that has finally been adapted to film (now streaming on Netflix). Unfortunately, while Westerfeld’s books were memorable trendsetters in the genre, the long-awaited movie feels like a collection of YA clichés. And...

The dystopian young adult novel “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld is coming to Netflix on September 13, 2024, nearly two decades after its publication. The film adaptation brings Westerfeld’s vision of a society where physical perfection is mandated by law to life.
Actress Joey King leads the film as Tally Youngblood, a role she has wanted since reading the novel at age 11. “Getting to play Tally is such an amazing feeling,” said King. “These books meant so much to me growing up.”
In Westerfeld’s world, everyone undergoes an operation at age 16 that makes them surgically beautiful, or “pretty.” But Tally’s friend Shay flees before the procedure, prompting Tally to search for her. This journey exposes hidden truths about their enforced conformity.
While largely following the plot, some changes were made for the screen. For example, the inclusion of Thoreau’s “Walden” adds literary rebellion. And the Rangers and Smokies, two book groups,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for Uglies on Netflix.
Uglies star and producer Joey King first became aware of Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies book series when she was 11 years old, and now more than 10 years later, her pitch to adapt the first book into a film to Netflix will yield its result.
Uglies is based in a futuristic society that requires teenagers to get a cosmetic surgery once they turn 16 to make them “pretty,” or devoid of facial flaws with a toned body. Tally Youngblood (King) dreams of the day she can have the operation and get a symmetrical face, until her new friend Shay (Brianne Tsu) runs away to the rumored community known as The Smoke with the mysterious man David (Keith Powers), and Dr. Cable (Laverne Cox) sends her after Shay with the blackmail that she will never get surgery if she doesn’t retrieve her missing friend.

Review: After Harry Potter and The Hunger Games were adapted for the big screen, every studio wanted to launch a franchise based on a Young Adult book series. While Twilight was the biggest success, countless other series were met with lukewarm receptions yet still delivered multiple sequels. It has been several years since The Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, and Divergent stopped adding to their intellectual property while countless others failed to get past an initial entry. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies is Netflix’s belated attempt to attract the YA audience with what is intended to be the first in a potential quadrilogy.

Sci-fi and fantasy movies have always taught us that fascism is bad and that we shouldn’t discriminate against each other under any circumstances because that leads to the death of humanity. Even though its rabid fanbase will claim otherwise, Star Wars has consistently talked about the dangers of dictatorship and highlighted the importance of rebelling. Young-adult franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent have all been about the need to protect democracy and human rights because they take years to build and only a second of bigotry to destroy. I grew up watching all these movies, and, despite my low cognitive skills, I understood their anti-fascist messages, and I continue to promote them till this day. So, you can imagine my confusion upon seeing people who have also watched these movies and stars who have gained popularity by cosplaying as revolutionaries, partaking in discrimination, and celebrating wanton violence.

“Uglies” is a sci-fi movie starring Joey King, Keith Powers and Chase Stokes.
“Uglies” is a film that transports viewers into a futuristic universe reminiscent of “The Hunger Games” (2008), blending elements of past inspirations to paradoxically strive for a resolution to a chaotic future. This movie is an adventure deeply inspired by the 2008 film and Suzanne Collins’ literary universe, merging futurism with a critique of capitalism and seeking rejuvenation in youth to combat corporate disorder.
Indeed, the films starring Jennifer Lawrence garnered significant public acclaim, and “Uglies” appears to aspire to the same level of success without introducing anything groundbreaking or contributing fresh ideas. Consequently, “Uglies” emerges as yet another adventure tailored for rebellious teenagers seeking self-identity. The narrative offers nothing new, either in literary or cinematic terms.
Plot Summary
At the age of 16, young individuals undergo a cosmetic procedure designed to render them perfect—handsome, beautiful, and socially integrated.

A brave young woman battles a repressive society in a dystopian future, while honing her archery skills in the process. No, it’s not The Hunger Games, but rather Netflix’s latest cinematic sci-fi YA effort, based on the 2005 bestselling novel by Scott Westerfield that spawned several sequels. Joey King stars in this screen adaptation helmed by McG, and while Uglies won’t erase anyone’s memories of the previously mentioned cinematic franchise, it proves a reasonably engrossing thriller that should please younger audiences.
The hard-working Joey King (the Kissing Booth series, The Act, We Were the Lucky Ones) plays the central role of Tally, who lives in a futuristic world that mandates cosmetic surgery at age 16 for all of its citizens (doesn’t seem that far-fetched an idea these days) who are known as the “Uglies” before they’re transformed into the “Pretties.” Not that Tally objects, as she...

Even in a world where unrealistic photo filters have messed with our heads, Joey King (“A Family Affair”) wouldn’t be considered anything less than pretty with her lagoon-blue eyes and youthful complexion. But in the realm of “Uglies,” director McG’s (“Charlie’s Angels”) halfhearted screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 young-adult novel, her character Tally Youngblood’s objective attractiveness is irrelevant. That’s because being pretty means something entirely different in the reality that she lives, one that exists several hundred years after the demise of our own.
In that unnamed future, everyone at the age of 16 mandatorily goes through a surgical procedure to become their best-looking selves—a coming-of-age day as spiritual as getting one’s period or being celebrated at a teenage-centric religious custom. Until then, you’re stuck in an educational institution with the rest of “the uglies.”

I think it’s fair to say film critics everywhere owe the YA genre an apology. Films about teens in sci-fi and fantasy settings who radicalize, organize, and tear down dystopian empires may be a little hokey and repetitive, but in retrospect, spending decades telling young people it’s their responsibility to be politically active and dismantle broken, oppressive social systems might have laid some positive groundwork. I’ll happily sit through hackneyed junk like “Divergent” and “The Host” and “The Darkest Minds” if it means one day their target audience will actually rise up and fix our broken health care system and repeal all the bigoted anti-transgender laws.
What I will not do is settle for McG’s “Uglies,” the latest YA dystopia yarn, based on a series of books by Scott Westerfeld. It’s a boring and disturbingly ill-conceived motion picture about a future where humanity tore itself apart,...

Beauty is pain, but then again, so is heartache. The current film trend of 2024 are stories of women seeking perfection by any means necessary: Demi Moore risks turning into a crone for the sake of revitalizing her career in Cannes breakout film “The Substance,” Kate Hudson plays a shady cosmetics guru who may or may not be experimenting on clients in the name of eternal youth for “Shell,” and Elizabeth Banks loses her business — and her mind — in “Skincare” as a struggling facialist who is attempting to carve out her own space in the ever-changing beauty industry.
Now, Joey King is adding to the film landscape with “Uglies.” Despite not being the product of an original script like those other, aforementioned features, “Uglies” feels distinctly prescient in this era of influencers, filters, and — of course — discussions of what it means to get older as a woman.

This September, we're getting a pre-spooky season Friday the 13th, and while these Fridays tend to be big ones for horror movie fans, Netflix won't be releasing a new horror movie. Instead, usually spook-ified occasion debuts Joey King's latest collaboration with Netflix, the dystopian young adult sci-fi flick Uglies. It's King's second Netflix movie of 2024, following the hit rom-com A Family Affair.
Based on the novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies makes its long-awaited premiere on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 13 as the big movie release of the week. Jumping off of the success of last week's hit Netflix original movie Rebel Ridge, King's latest starring role has all of the potential to be another blockbuster and another sci-fi win for Netflix this year following Atlas.
Wondering at exactly what time you can start watching Tally Youngblood's rebellious adventures in a dystopian future perfection holds utmost importance?...

Some people say beauty is only skin deep, but what if you could change how you look at a cellular level? Would you embrace a procedure that augments your features, making you stereotypically beautiful? What if that beauty came with a one-way ticket to a society where every gorgeous person lords over those considered lesser-than? In Netflix’s Uglies trailer, Joey King stars as Tally Youngblood, a young woman awaiting her chance to become beautiful and take her place among the elite. However, when things don’t go as planned, Tally discovers a society that values natural beauty over enhanced features and snobbery.

Uglies was first published in 2005, but King believes its power has only grown over the years. “I think it is super relevant that we’re making this now,” King said.
McG agrees, telling Tudum, “The film’s really about beauty as interior,” he said.

"What if i told you... that there's an alternative." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a movie called Uglies, a sci-fi thriller set in a futuristic dystopian world in which a compulsory plastic surgery operation wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty. Joey King is finally getting her “Divergent” and “Hunger Games”-esque YA-novel adaptation.
The “Kissing Booth” trilogy’s alum and “The Act” breakout star leads “Uglies,” set in a world where teens are tracked down and forced to undergo plastic surgery to be their most “perfect” selves. Think of it like a reverse version of buzzy Cannes title “The Substance,” just taking place in a dystopian near-future out in the forest. Of course, the feature also includes the staple YA love triangle and more genre tropes.
“Outer Banks” actor Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Laverne Cox, Brianne Tju, and Jan Luis Castellanos co-star.
McG directs the Netflix feature that is written Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson, based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld.
King previously told IndieWire that each project across her decades-spanning career, from “Moneyball” to “The Dark Knight Rises” to Hulu’s Holocaust miniseries “We Were the Lucky Ones...
