Leah Gunter has been forging her own path since she was a kid growing up in Wichita, Kansas. Her first passion as a student of jazz and ballet took her to Clark Atlanta University, where she had to declare between dance and film. As a freshman she ended up editing mostly senior projects and embraced film wholeheartedly then went on to The Art Institute, exploring a course called The Science of Lighting, which opened the door to the art of editing. A chance to work as a production assistant on a feature gave her a taste for filmmaking in action and began her career in the business. Her job as an assistant editor Take Care (2014) moved her to New York, under the eye of John P. Melfi Sex and the City (1998) / House of Cards (2013). She was back and forth between New York and LA, building her career for several years, before eventually landing the prestigious triple Academy Award nominated film Hidden Figures (2016) produced by Peter Chernin, Donna Gigliotti and Jenno Topping.
A firm aesthetic foundation, built on the disciplines of art, jazz choreography and editing, is apparent in all Leah's creative endeavors. She recently launched an online publication, The Masters Of Editorial; interviews with highly successful editors about their techniques, perspectives on the business, unique career paths, and advice for those up and coming. Leah has also created a series of experimental short films, The Art of the Creative, which will be released on The Culturalite and as an interactive educational series at select performing art schools across the country.
