Here is a factual statement for dear readers: Twelve years ago, Canada saw its biggest heist, the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.” If the name brought a hint of amusement to you, along with the usual apprehension one gets from seedy crimes like robberies, then Amazon Prime’s “The Sticky” (season 1) would be the perfect choice for you. The “Fargo”-coded dark comedy, featuring a motley crew of characters portrayed by an equally diverse cast, is maddeningly hilarious and delightfully entertaining. With half-an-hour-a-piece six episodes, the season zooms through its cold crime-drama premise with oddly fitting circumstantial humor and zany dialogues. All signs of a great dark comedy.

As each episode of “The Sticky” declares, Prime Video’s twisted comedy series about a maple syrup heist in Canada, is definitely not accurately depicting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. But can you blame creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro for hearing an event title like that and wanting to let their imaginations run wild?
Across six episodes (and it deserved eight!), “The Sticky” presents an excellent case for television taking completely wild liberties with true events. With that episodic disclaimer explicitly absolving the showrunners of misinforming viewers, they’re essentially creating an original story based on a fun idea. So what if that idea happened in real life, but differently? What if it went this way instead?
The final episode, written by Donovan and Herro and directed by Michael Dowse, sees Ruth (Margo Martindale), Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy (Guillaume Cyr) finally follow through on their big plans,...

"This is our chance... to show 'em who's boss!" Prime Video has unveiled an official trailer for a new comedy crime / heist thriller series called The Sticky, which will be streaming starting in December later this year. It's inspired by the true story known as the "Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist" - which really happened in 2011 & 2012. Officially, according to the numbers, it is the "most valuable heist in Canadian history!" How dare anyone steal that precious liquid gold. "Mayhem, murder, and maple syrup." The Sticky is a comedy-drama series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team of misfits to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country's multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus. The acclaimed Margo Martindale stars as Ruth in this, with a series cast featuring Chris Diamantopoulos, Guillaume Cyr, Guy Nadon, Gita Miller, Mickaël Gouin, and Suzanne Clément.

Amazon Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for the dark comedy series “The Sticky.”
According to the official logline, the show “follows Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale), a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out a multi-million-dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.”
As Variety exclusively reported, all six episodes of the half-hour show will debut on Dec. 6. It is based on the real Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, but makes it clear in the trailer that “this is absolutely not the true story.”
Watch the full trailer below.
Other cast members include Gita Millier, Guy Nadon, Mickaël Gouin, Suzanne Clément, Mark O’Brien, Meegwun Fairbrother, and Vickie Papavs, with Jamie Lee Curtis appearing in a guest role.

2020 continues, as a first trailer for the Quebec remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has now been released. Yes, you read all of those words correctly. Do not adjust your screen.
Escouade 99 (Squad 99 in English) really does appear to be a near shot-for-shot remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with its original cast replaced by the likes of Mickaël Gouin, Bianca Gervais, Mylène Mackay, Widemir Normil and Guy Jodoin. The Quebec version was directed by Patrick Huard (Bon Cop Bad Cop) and it follows “a group of endearing and out of the ordinary detectives who fight crime at Escouade 99 in Quebec City.”
Quebec broadcast company Quebecor Content purchased the rights to the Andy Samberg-led comedy series last year, and this is the first time that the team behind Brooklyn Nine-Nine have authorized an adaptation of outside of the U.S., according to HuffPo. So, from next month, the often shamelessly weird and predominantly...

Exclusive: French-Canadian drama Nelly is set for a U.S. release after Cinema Libre Studio picked up the rights to Anne Émond’s feature film.
The company, hot on the heels of picking up Vanessa Filho-directed and Marion Cotillard-fronted Angel Face, has taken U.S. rights from eOne’s Seville International.
The film, which stars French-Canadian actress and Toronto International Film Festival Rising Star Myléne Mackay (Endorphine), tells the story of Nelly Arcan, a sex worker in Montreal who wrote a semi-autobiographical novel Putain, based on her experiences.
Arcan, who wrote about self-destruction and feminine beauty as obsessive themes in all of her books, was fixated on being an object of desire herself and she killed herself in 2009, four days after submitting the last edits to her fourth book.
The film, which premiered at Tiff, was produced by Go Films’ Nicole Roberts and was written by Émond. It...
