The Sundance Film Festival might be moving in 2028, but until then, it’s parking itself back in Park City for another edition of what are expected to be just under 100 features and 50 shorts. The second Sundance under the supervision of new festival director (and IndieWire co-founder) Eugene Hernandez takes place January 23 through February 2, with the lineup expecting to start trickling out next week.
Ahead of the announcement, however, IndieWire has the scoop on films we’re hearing will be in Utah this year and the ones — some long-gestating indies, others secret surprise drops — we’re hoping will pop there. Some expected titles, like Celine Song’s “Past Lives” follow-up “Materialists” or “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” from Kogonoda either aren’t finished yet or are holding out for Cannes and into the fall festivals. Others, like Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s “Hot Milk,” have been on this list before.

Emily in Paris became one of Netflix’s biggest hit series upon its release but I think it was also one of the most hated shows. Created by Darren Star, the romantic-comedy series stars Lily Collins as the title character, and the series is filled with stunning scenery, glamorous fashion moments, and beautiful and delicious-looking food. The first part of Emily in Paris Season 4 was recently released on Netflix with Part 2 coming out in September this year. So, if you loved all the glamour, romance, comedy, and drama in Emily in Paris here are some similar shows you should check out while waiting for Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 2.

“Dreams In Nightmares” starts from a very familiar place. Three friends go on a journey to search for a fourth, in the process discovering new truths about themselves. A main character even announces that they want “the quintessential American road trip.” But as the audience settles into what they think will be a story frequently told, Shatara Michelle Ford’s sophomore film reveals itself to be much more than that. The film, which premiered as the opening night presentation at Philadelphia’s Blackstar Film Festival, punctures those expectations to deliver something grander and more poetic.
A university professor and a business consultant who have recently been laid off from their respective jobs, Z (Denée Benton) and Tasha (Sasha Compère) are spending time together to cope with the unemployment blues. They join their friend Lauren (Dezi Bing), a poet who works odd jobs to make ends meet, on a trip to...

Three cross-coastal best friends reunite for a spontaneous road trip across the American underbelly in Dreams in Nightmares, the sophomore feature from writer-director Shatara Michelle Ford. Though a significant pivot in theme and scope from their lean yet intense debut feature Test Pattern, Ford’s latest continues to plainly indicts the oppression that finds Black, femme, queer bodies at a stark institutional disadvantage. After being laid off from their respective jobs in academia and finance, Z (Denée Benton) and Tasha (Sasha Compère) hop on the phone to reschedule a planned trip to the Dominican Republic. Instead of lounging in paradise, Tasha […]

The title of Shatara Michelle Ford’s new film, Dreams in Nightmares, is a declarative statement, gesturing at once toward the world the director builds in their sophomore project and an understanding of Black queer existence in the United States. In spite of persistent national violence, Black queer people have always created loving, thriving communities. These pockets of joy — whether between friends, chosen family or neighbors — are soothing reveries interrupting often cruel realities. In Dreams in Nightmares, Ford borrows from and remixes the road movie to construct a vision of Black femmes finding peace.
Premiering at the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia, Dreams in Nightmares chronicles a two-week journey in which three Black femmes set out to find a missing friend. Kel (Mars Storm Rucker) has never been the best communicator, but when Z (Denée Benton), Lauren (Dezi Bing) and Tasha (Sasha Compère) all have trouble reaching them, worry sets in.

When Shatara Michelle Ford’s “Dreams in Nightmares” premieres Thursday night at the BlackStar Film Festival, it will, like all productions, be the result of the work of many. In the case of the “Test Pattern” filmmaker’s sophomore feature, it will also be the result of the work of many people who united together behind a set of “production community guidelines” that Ford and their producers shared with the cast and crew during every step of the film’s production.
These guidelines were originally shared in the official press notes for the film, but they were so striking, so heartening, that IndieWire is now sharing them in full below. And while one of the tenants of these guidelines holds that mistakes will be made — and Ford is quick to note that these concepts “aren’t perfect” — there’s much here that any production could and should be inspired by.

Rising acclaimed filmmaker Shatara Michelle Ford has completed their highly anticipated sophomore feature, following their Indie Spirit- and Gothams-nominated debut “Test Pattern.” Ford (who uses they/she/their pronouns) will premiere their “Dreams in Nightmares” as the opening night film at this year’s BlackStar Film Festival on August 1.
Ford’s “Test Pattern,” a standout debut from 2019, also premiered at BlackStar that same year. The film was distributed by Kino Lorber and went on to be nominated for three Gotham Awards, including Best Picture and three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best First Feature. Billed by this writer as a “perceptive look at sexual assault and relationships,” Ford’s film was one of the finest of the year, and spelled the beginning of a very exciting career for the filmmaker.

Freeform's scripted roster just took a hit.
The cable network has canceled Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye, according to Deadline.
Even worse: all episodes of both series are being removed from Hulu today, meaning that they'll only be available to purchase via iTunes and Amazon.
Single Drunk Female Season 1 was a massive hit for Freeform and Hulu, where it garnered strong viewership on streaming, but the buzz seemingly faded by the time Single Drunk Female Season 2 debuted earlier this year.
The second season launched in April and picked up with Sam a year and a half into her sobriety journey and finally feeling "like she has a life worth celebrating," the logline states.
"However, Sam quickly learns that sometimes life has other plans for her."
"Sam must figure out how to effect change where she can, sit in her discomfort when she can't, and maybe even enjoy the ride.

Freeform is shedding a pair of scripted originals.
The Disney-owned cable network has canceled sophomore comedy Single Drunk Female and rookie drama The Watchful Eye.
The news comes four months after Disney’s Dana Walden shuffled her executive ranks and gave oversight of Freeform to Simran Sethi, the ABC development executive who previously headed up originals for the younger-skewing broadcast network with former Freeform president Tara Duncan now exclusively focused on the Onyx Collective studio.
Single Drunk Female starredSofia Black-d’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compere, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard and hailed from creator Simone Finch (The Connors) and exec producer Jenni Konner (Girls). The show was produced in-house by Disney’s 20th Television, where Konner is based with an overall deal.
The Watchful Eye, meanwhile, ran for one season on Freeform and starred Mariel Molino in the thriller about a young nanny who goes to work...

Samantha Fink has grown up and owned her choices. Single Drunk Female Season 2 finds Samantha Fink (Sofia Black-d'Elia) sober for a year and a half and prioritizing healthy relationships, even if that means angering her mom Carol (Ally Sheedy).

[This story contains major spoilers for Single Drunk Female season 2.]
In the second season of Single Drunk Female, creator Simone Finch wanted to expand beyond Sam’s (Sofia Black-d’Elia) journey with physical sobriety and explore what comes next: emotional sobriety. “We wanted to talk more about what happens when you’re sober and you think that you have everything figured out,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The result is something equally as messy for Sam as season one, just in some compelling (and cringey) new ways. And as audiences see, her friends and family are not immune to season two’s mess. As a result, the return of Freeform’s breakout hit — which debuted on April 12 and is airing weekly on the cabler (though the entirety of the season is already available on Hulu) — watches more in its second go like an ensemble show, where more screen time translates to more complication but also more depth.

Sam Fink has grown up. In Single Drunk Female Season 1, she struggled with staying sober and making amends. In Season 2, she's learning it's even harder to remain sober while navigating a new job, a new boyfriend, and moving out on her own.
In many ways, Sam wanted to be normal, but half the time, she knew she was not. She wanted to date someone who didn't have an addiction, but she knew she would still have to attend meetings, something her mom Carol still doesn't understand.
Even though Sam is more in charge of her recovery, she's still an alcoholic, and that's something that mother and daughter finally have to face. It's rough but a beautiful and emotional arc for both.
Both Brit and Felicia decided what they wanted in life, even if it hurt people. Brit went up against her family to finally conquer her dreams. Felicia had someone...

Freeform’s “Single Drunk Female” Season 2 trailer is here to show that Samantha Fink’s sober journey is only the starting point in her story.
The comedy series — set to return Wednesday, April 12, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Freeform, and releasing the full ten-episode second season on Hulu Thursday, April 13 — showed a glimpse of Sam (Sofia Black-d’Elia) working to become more self-sufficient after getting more comfortable in her sobriety.
The new trailer, debuting exclusively on TheWrap, finds Sam looking for apartments with her friend Felicia (Lily Mae Harrington) to move into now that she’s been sober for a year and a half.
“If last season was Sam having to deal with her worst self to become her best self, this year it’s ‘I did everything right! Why doesn’t my life work yet?!'” Daisy Gardner, showrunner, executive producer and writer said in a statement to TheWrap.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Single Drunk Female” Season 1 finale, including the ending.]
Over the course of the first season of “Single Drunk Female,” success comes in wildly different forms. Whether it’s the incremental steps that multiple characters take toward maintaining sobriety or learning how to say sorry, it’s sometimes hard for Sam (Sofia Black-d’Elia) to gauge how much she should actually celebrate.
After some early stumbles and a string of stressful moments that could have kept her from getting to that point, Sam finishes Season 1 with over a year of sobriety. That wasn’t necessarily part of series creator Simone Finch’s original plan. But in working with fellow executive producer Jenni Konner, Finch found a season-ending symmetry in the journeys of Sam and sobriety pal-turned-romantic interest James (Garrick Bernard).

Freeform’s comedy series Single Drunk Female got off a promising ratings start. The January 20 launch has amassed over 2.4 million multiplatform viewers in Live+7, according to Nielsen and Freeform, marking the network’s biggest comedy premiere since the Jan. 3, 2018 debut of grown-ish more than four years ago.
The opening episode also was the most-watched Freeform comedy series premiere on Hulu, and the second-best performance overall for a Freeform series premiere on the platform, behind only Cruel Summer, which averaged 3.81 million multi-platform viewers in its first week.
There is a caveat. Freeform has only launched one comedy series since grown-ish, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, plus the pandemic-themed 2020 entry Love in the Time of Corona. Still, Single Drunk Female‘s performance is respectable for a comedy on basic cable which traditionally are hard to launch. It complements the show’s critical success with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
