He was often involved in street fighting from a young age. Masvidal later competed in wrestling at St. Brendan High School, but failed to stay eligible because of his grades, and then began training in mixed martial arts. He is now a professional mixed martial artist and has fought under Bellator, Strikeforce, Shark Fights, World Victory Road and the UFC.

Masvidal has two daughters and a son with his ex-girlfriend, who he was with for well over ten years.

His Korean name is Yim, Chang-ryong.
