Films about the movie industry have been abundantly presented recently in Japanese cinema. Tokuhiro Yasukawa, in his feature debut, comes up with his own take, which strays away, though, from the norm, due to its intense experimentation that actually has the actors repeating the same lines from a play throughout the movie.

Film Review: Island of Cats (2019) by Mitsuaki Iwago Screening at Fantasia 2019
Japan features a number of “Cat Islands”, where the feline population usually exceeds the one of human significantly. And who better than Mitsuaki Iwago, a former wildlife photographer, to capture life in one of those islands, in a delightful film based on the manga series “Neko to Jiichan” by the duo known as Nekomaki.

The film actually begins with Tama, one of those cats narrating and introducing himself and his “servant”, the elderly widower Daikichi.
