David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

The Bear was one of the highly acclaimed comedy dramas of last year because, for the first time, this show broke the rules of how a comedy should be presented. There is comedy in chaos, impatience, and anger, and all of this is well executed thanks to some excellent writing done by Christopher Storer, Sofya Levitsky-Weitz, Karen Joseph Adcock, Joanna Calo, Catherine Schetina, Rene Gube and Stacy Osei-Kuffour. It looks like the writer’s room must have been as chaotic as the theme of the show, but thankfully, this is not a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Do you see the irony of that idiom?

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Scoring multiple nods across the categories were expected newcomers like “Abbott Elementary” and “Severance,” which already had Emmy-winning runs for their first seasons, as well as more recent critical hits “The Bear” and “Andor.” All were nominated in their respective comedy and drama categories as well as for New Series.

Film Independent announced the TV nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Tuesday morning, with four shows in particular leading the pack. ABC’s beloved comedy “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s critical darling “The Bear,” the HBO Max limited series “Station Eleven” and the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama “Severance” scored the most nominations of any show with three each.
The Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” won the Best Ensemble award.

In addition to this change, a Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series award has been added to honor performances outside of the leading roles.
The 38th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held on March 4, 2023, in Santa Monica. Check out the film nominees here.

The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) celebrates the tenth anniversary of their New Writers Fellowship Program by ushering in a class of seven writers.
The New Writers Fellowship Program is a non-studio professional development program that trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood. The program boasts a reputable track record, placing graduates on over 50 shows across all major network, cable and streaming platforms in addition to those who have signed overall deals.
“In Cape’s research survey with the Geena Davis Institute, nearly 90 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander entertainment professionals we surveyed said they were often the only Asian or Pacific Islander person in the room,” said Michelle K. Exclusive: Range Media Partners has locked 17 more clients for the new management/production company. This comes as its lineup of ground floor partners has changed as Lucinda Moorhead, who left UTA to join Range, has decided she will instead stay with the agency and not join the upstart venture.
On the heels of its launch earlier this month, the new Range clients range from talent to filmmakers and TV writer/producers. The company has also confirmed the clients Deadline first reported would be joining the new company.
On the talent side, Range Media Partners has signed Alessandro Nivola, Alyssa Milano, Andrew Lincoln, Eric Singer, Shea Whigham, and Vincent Cassell. Also coming are filmmakers Baltasar Kormakur, Gareth Edwards; The Raid: Redemption director Gareth Evans (who continues to be repped by Management 360); Jc Chandor; Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard); Ric Roman Waugh; and Martin Zandvliet.
On the TV writer/producer side, the new clients are Jackie Clarke; Gracie Glassmeyer; Rene Gube; and Rosa Handelman.
They join an original influx of clients that includes Naomi Ackie, Michael Bay, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jessie Buckley, Jerrod Carmichael, Emilia Clarke, Bradley Cooper, Johnny Depp, Taron Egerton, Michael Fassbender, Luca Guadagnino, Tom Hardy, Stephan James, Anna Kendrick, Taylor Kitsch, Keira Knightley, Danny McBride/Rough House Pictures, Martin McDonagh, Michael Shannon and Ramy Youssef.
We hear that Moorhead’s deal with Range did not close and that UTA made her a strong offer to stay at the agency.
The exit of Moorhead means that the ground floor partners at Range Media Partners are Dave Bugliari, Mackenzie Condon Roussos, Rich Cook, Michael Cooper, Susie Fox, Matt Graham, Sandra Kang, Rachel Kropa, Chelsea McKinnies, Peter Micelli, Mick Sullivan, Byron Wetzel, and Jack Whigham.

It all comes back to happiness, no matter who is involved.
Rebecca once again learns that everything will fall into place once she chooses her own happiness first, whether it is romantic or professional.
But Josh also learned that lesson when he reassessed his relationships, to some quite surprising results.
During Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 13, Rebecca was trying to figure out what her dream might be for the future. But this also included embracing her treatment and facing what will happen with her and Greg.
They choose to stay friends, which makes Josh and Nathaniel happy when they find out the news. Josh realizes that he still likes Rebecca, around the same time that he comes to terms with the fact that he and Greg aren't the same kind of friends as they used to be.
Meanwhile, Paula gets to take the bar exam, and Darryl gets to meet someone...

Greg is back and everything makes sense again.
More realistically though, Greg's return marks the question of identity and being able to change over time. Skylar Astin reinvents a new version of that role, proving that it is never too late to check in on an old favorite.
During Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 8, Rebecca deals with her various growing feelings for Josh and Nathaniel by meeting Greg again and focusing on that. Greg looks different, which pushes him to try to form a bond with Rebecca again until she reveals that she slept with his father.
Meanwhile, Valencia reveals a huge secret to Heather at her high school reunion about a past ex. Turns out Father Brah had a rather dramatic love life before he chose his relationship to God.
And Josh reflects back on his time in high school, using George as a resource about everything he missed out on by being popular.

Selecting the best TV episodes of the year is always a complicated process, as singling out an individual half hour or hour (or in some cases 75 minutes) can sometimes seem antithetical to the greater art of TV. If these shows are designed to be experienced as a whole, whether in a single viewing or spread out over weeks and months, what’s the point in picking out smaller sections of the overall unified piece?
The truth is that some of these episodes are self-contained gems that somehow contain all the elements that enrich the stories around them. Other standout episodes are the logical conclusion of countless hours of preparation, the payoff to a promise built over entire seasons.

Whatever the reason, as we soar past the 2018 halfway mark, it’s worth noting some of these focused achievements on an individual level.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Brockmire” Season 2 finale, “In the Cellar.”]
Right around the point when Elle (Carrie Preston) picks up a revolver for a game of Russian Roulette, the Season 2 finale “Brockmire” stops being funny. It’s only for a short while, but you’d understand why filming that pivotal scene may have caused some of the crew members to think the show had changed for good.
“As I always would tell people on set, like when the stunt coordinator’s handling the gun, ‘Don’t worry guys, this is a comedy. It’s a comedy. I’m telling you right now, it’s going to be funny. It’s funny before this scene and it’s going to be funny after,'” series creator Joel Church-Cooper told IndieWire. “We’re trying to push the character and push the content and explore new spaces in TV. From the title on down, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has been built on dealing with expectations. What audiences expect from a show with frequent song breaks, what women expect from the world and each other, what behavior is appropriate in the wake of trauma. And it’s managed to do all of this while staying one of the most reliably funny and entertaining shows on TV.
Now as the show approaches its Season 3, the events of Rebecca Bunch’s (Rachel Bloom) past loom larger than ever over her life and everyone caught in her obsessive orbit. Instead of becoming an insular, for-fans-only dive down the rabbit hole of a jilted lover, these new episodes use her story as a jumping-off point for looking at just how far her behavior can go, and to what lengths her friends are willing to go to keep her happy.

On Monday’s episode of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Rebecca cooks a traditional Filipino dish called dinuguan to impress Josh’s family at their Thanksgiving celebration. By the time it came to filming the scene that included eating the pork blood stew, the meal looked more like carnitas than the hearty soul food it was meant to be. “The dinuguan had been sitting on set all day in the heat, so it no longer looked accurate,” said episode writer Rene Gube. “I started thinking about whether I’d say so because the props guy was working his ass off, and if I slowed down production, we might run overtime, and it would cost thousands of dollars. But [executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna] saw my face and asked what was wrong. When I told her, she immediately stopped everything and said, ‘It’s done, we’ll fix it.’” This might be perceived as a minor course-correction in...

There won't be a third season for the Ground Floor sitcom. A couple weeks ago, it was reported that TBS had cancelled the comedy but a representative for the cable channel said that a decision hadn't been made about the show's future. Now, that all of the second season episodes have aired, TBS has officially decided they won't be ordering any more.
Ground Floor follows the romantic relationship of a young hotshot banker (Skylar Astin) and a beautiful maintenance worker (Briga Heelan). The rest of the sitcom's cast includes Rory Scovel, Rene Gube, James Earl, Emily Heller, and John C. McGinley.
Season two ended up averaging a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.47 million viewers. That was essentially on par with the first season's performance but apparently not good enough to earn Ground Floor a third season renewal. The last episode aired on...

It looks like Bill Lawrence's low-rated sitcom may be ending soon. TVLine reports that TBS has cancelled Ground Floor after two seasons on the air. A rep for the cable channel however maintains that the series hasn't been officially cancelled.
McGinley.
Airing on Tuesday nights, Ground Floor is currently averaging a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.49 million viewers. That's about what the first season drew so the sitcom's performance has been pretty consistent.
On the negative side, the third season of Sullivan & Son did about the same in the ratings and it was cancelled after three seasons.

It seems that TBS is raising their ratings standards for their original sitcoms. After all, the cable channel has cancelled Men at Work and Sullivan & Son and, Cougar Town is ending. The ratings for Ground Floor weren't very strong last year so could it already be destined to be cancelled? How will the numbers be this time around -- good enough for the sitcom to earn a third season? Stay tuned.
