2024 hasn’t been that great of a year for Prime Video, as the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power failed to make up for its abysmal first season and continued its streak of huge disappointment. That doesn’t mean there were no great shows on Prime Video this year. So, we compiled a list comprising the 10 best original prime video shows of 2024.

When Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten and Moisés Arias signed on to Jonathan Nolan’s “Fallout” TV series at Amazon’s Prime Video, the actors didn’t know where the adaptation of the popular Bethesda Game Studios franchise was headed. And that was fine by them, after reading the initial scripts that revealed the post-apocalyptic world their respective characters, Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, Lucy, Maximus and Norm, were surviving in.
“We got two episodes. Two episodes were written before we started to understand the tone. And then [the scripts] would dribble out,” Goggins said during a recent panel hosted by Variety.
In fact, Goggins said the finale script wasn’t delivered until a few days before filming.
“Yellowjackets” star Purnell says she had a prep meeting with show creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet ahead of even auditioning for “Fallout” to get a sense of the vibe they were going for with the show.

The Prime Video TV series adaptation of the popular Fallout video game franchise already had a second season in the works before the first season even started streaming – which turned out to be a good move, because Fallout quickly became Prime Video’s second most-watched title (after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), drawing in 65 million viewers in its first 16 days of release. Now, we’ve learned that Fallout season 2 has started filming, and we’ve been tipped off by the fact that Walton Goggins, who plays The Ghoul, shared an image on social media that shows him getting back into Ghoul character.

Crack open a Nuka-Cola, folks — the next season of Prime Video's Fallout just got a little bit more exciting! After the show earned itself a swift Season 2 renewal back in April off the back of stellar reviews and impressive viewing figures, anticipation has steadily been building for our return to Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner's video game inspired post-nuclear wasteland. Now, we're finally getting word on the first big new name who'll be joining us for the ride — and it's someone with prior experience of surviving in hostile environments on-screen. Per Deadline's reporting, Culkin — whose last major TV appearance was as Mickey in American Horror Story: Double-Feature back in 2021 — is set to play "a crazy genius-type character" in the show, which boasts Westworld architects Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy as producers.

Prime Video’s “Fallout” didn’t forget Macaulay Culkin. The “Home Alone” star has booked a recurring role in Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated drama, Variety has confirmed. There are no details yet to Culkin’s character on the series, but Deadline, which broke the news, wrote that it will be a “crazy genius type.”
Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the series is set two hundred years after the apocalypse. The official description states it follows “the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters that are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.”
Culkin’s recent credits include providing a voice on “The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy,” as well as multiple episodes of “The Righteous Gemstones” and as part of the cast of “American Horror Story: Double Feature.

Since its inception in 1997, the Fallout series has been a popular video game franchise around the world. After Interplay and Black Isle, Bethesda took over the franchise and gave fans some exceptional Fallout video games. Fans have been waiting for nearly a decade now for the next Fallout game, but Bethesda gave fans the same Fallout experience, just in the form of a TV series.

With the help of Todd Howard, the mastermind behind the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series, a series that was canonical to the Fallout games was released in April 2024. The show was a massive success and it’s safe to say that Howard’s approach was what made it special. On several occasions, he has explained that he treated the series like another entry in the video game series.

This year, “Shōgun” has extended the unbroken 2020s trend of at least one series earning multiple Best Drama Writing Emmy notices at once. Although none of the earlier cases resulted in wins, the new FX series is generally expected to fare differently, especially since, unlike most of its predecessors, it won’t have to fend off three-time winner “Succession.”
Of the 10 individuals presently nominated for this writing award, only 2021 champ Peter Morgan (“The Crown”) has competed for it before. Excluding his show and “Slow Horses,” a majority of the programs in this lineup launched in 2024.

Walton Goggins Celebrates ‘Fallout’ & Says ‘White Lotus’ Season 3 Is “A Seismic Consciousness Shift”
Walton Goggins has experienced the excitement of being part of a critically acclaimed series. He was a key cast member of both FX’s breakout programs “The Shield” and “Justified.” In fact, in 2011, he earned a Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nomination for his performance in the latter. That being said, his experience on Prime Video’s massive hit “Fallout,” has, so far, been at another level.

The popular video game “Fallout” has become one of Amazon Prime Video’s most successful shows thanks to the collaborative work of its screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Bringing diverse experiences in film and television, the pair have crafted a nuanced narrative set in the post-apocalyptic world inspired by the games.
Robertson-Dworet focuses on action movies but understood the need for character depth. Wagner specializes in comedy but recognized “Fallout’s” dramatic potential. They spent five years carefully designing a story entertaining to fans but accessible to new audiences. “We needed humor to balance the difficult topic,” explained Wagner.
The open-ended nature of the “Fallout” games allowed creativity but risked frustration if deviations upset loyal fans. Minor changes sparked online outrage, acknowledged Wagner. Overall freedom to develop new plots and personalities proved liberating. “We got to invent our own characters within the established world,” said Robertson-Dworet.

“I’ve always felt throughout my career that you can always get the audience to a slightly darker place if you tell them a couple of jokes along the way,” says Fallout executive producer/director Jonathan Nolan about the approach and tone the multi-Emmy-nominated Prime Video drama has taken in its debut season.

Portlandia alum Wagner agrees with Nolan’s Pov on mixed-genre storytelling.

“Fallout” production designer Howard Cummings just received his sixth Emmy nomination in a category that covers a lot of territory and is also a mouthful: Best Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More). But as a fellow nominee pointed out, he might have an edge here.

But one of my friends who designed one of the other shows called me up and went, ‘You’re actually the only one who actually covers both sides of that, by the way,'” Cummings tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I was like, ‘Yeah, it is. Because of the retrofuturism, it’s also period, but it’s also sci-fi.”

With the “Fallout” TV adaptation and Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” both landing Emmy noms in the drama category Wednesday, Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke and head of TV Vernon Sanders are celebrating Amazon’s unprecedented position of having two shows in the running for this year’s top prize.
Salke and Sanders spoke with Variety after the dust had settled to break down the 62 overall nominations received by Amazon and MGM Studios — including 17 for “Fallout,” 16 for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and a nod for TV movie for the LGBTQ rom-com “Red, White & Royal Blue,” among the studio’s other noms.
On the heels of the Emmys love for HBO’s “The Last of Us,” were you expecting “Fallout” to be able to achieve similar results or still cautious about the awards reaction to video game adaptations and genre TV?

Fallout scored an impressive 16 Emmy nominations on Wednesday, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series.
It’s one of the most-nominated shows that Amazon’s Prime Video has ever in a single year (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel put up 20 in its heyday), and it also is another shining moment for video game adaptations, following on the heels of the success of The Last of Us last year.
“It’s a 25-year-old game franchise that just keeps getting more and more relevant with the way that it takes on a lot of very serious issues about our society and our deepest fears, but it plays with them in a really fun way and makes it a world that you want to spend time in,” series creator and showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet told Deadline.

While breaking down Prime Video’s “Fallout,” showrunners and series creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet recognized that they were headed straight toward a “whopper pileup” in their finale. With three main characters — Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten) and the Ghoul/Cooper (Walton Goggins) — barreling toward the climactic showdown housed inside a burned-out, post-apocalyptic Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, the duo realized they had three major narrative reveals about to collide.
“We talked briefly about spreading the gravy a little thinner, as you spread gravy, of course,” jokes Wagner. “And at some point, there was a moment we were like, ‘Fuck it, it’s whopper city.’”
That creative chaos — the balance between the somber and the surreal — is where “Fallout” found its sweet spot. The TV series’ ability to distill the quirks from the video game’s retro-futuristic wasteland and dig into a deeper story while maintaining its signature...

As part of Variety’s “Behind the Song,” composer Ramin Djawadi for “Fallout” breaks down the “Brotherhood of Steel” theme.
When showrunner Jonathan Nolan was looking for a composer, he sought out his go-to, Djawadi. The two had previously worked together on “Batman Begins,” “Person of Interest” and “Westworld.”
Djawadi wanted to capture the same moody, ambient vibe that was in the score for the video game. “It’s this post-apocalyptic setting in the future, but the visuals are stuck in the ’50s. The songs in there are from that era,...

[This story contains spoilers from Fallout and Yellowjackets.]
As Ella Purnell was in the middle of shooting her future hit series Fallout, she found herself pining away for the circle of friends she had formed by way of her previous hit series, Yellowjackets. The English actor had joined the Showtime series knowing full well that her starring role as Jackie Taylor, the captain of the Yellowjackets soccer team, would conclude with her dramatic death in the season one finale. But as Purnell bonded more and more with her fellow Yellowjackets actors, her one-season role, initially a selling point, became less appealing. So she tried to reverse course and prolong her stay in the inhospitable wilderness where the desperate teenage characters have to resort to cannibalism as a means of survival.
“I was like, ‘It’s only a one-year deal. I’m not locked into a seven-year contract.’ So, at the time, that seemed really appealing.

Walton Goggins has played gunslingers before. He’s been a renegade sheriff in The Hateful Eight, an outlaw on Justified, a Navy Seal on Six and a trigger-happy train robber in Shanghai Noon — but Fallout marks the first time he’s been two versions of one cowboy.
In Prime Video’s adaptation of the popular video game franchise, Goggins portrays Cooper Howard, a Hollywood Western has-been making ends meet as the lasso-spinning entertainment at kids’ parties. He’s also The Ghoul, a radioactive bounty hunter hardened by two centuries of wandering in a post-nuclear hellscape.
Set in 23rd century dystopian L.A. some 220 years after an atomic bomb decimated the U.S., the first season follows Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), an intrepid vault dweller who leaves her underground community in search of her kidnapped father (Kyle MacLachlan). How do you breathe humanity into a post-nuke, radiation-poisoned America? In Fallout, it comes down to Walton Goggins’ noseless Ghoul, a cyclops vault dweller, bloodthirsty mutated bears and a centuries-decayed Santa Monica Pier, just to name a few of the series’ cataclysmic details.

Among the many challenges that Jonathan Nolan faced when adapting Bethesda’s popular Fallout video game into a television series were narrowing the massive scope of the story — and finding the perfect people to tell it through.
Unlike other video games that have gotten a live-action adaptation, Fallout is a role playing game that requires the player to make choices that may alter the course of the story. It was creators and showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet who decided on an ensemble, that way every viewer could see themselves in someone on screen.
Enter Ella Purnell as the goodie-two-shoes vault dweller Lucy MacLean, Aaron Moten as the morally ambiguous Maximus, and Walton Goggins as the chaotic evil Ghoul. While all three of these actors faced challenges, Moten faced the especially tedious task of always toeing a line between the angel and the devil on his shoulders.

Fallout launched two months ago with a big question hovering over it — could another postapocalyptic streaming drama based on a video game also become a hit after the success of HBO’s The Last of Us? Any doubts were quickly erased, with Fallout racking up a 92 percent average positive review score on Rotten Tomatoes and breaking Prime Video streaming records with its sprawling tale of three very different survivors (played by Ella Purnell, Aaron Clifton Moten and Walton Goggins) navigating a nuclear wasteland amid moments of graphic violence and off-beat humor.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are longtime friends, but the two had never worked together. “Fallout” proved to be the perfect starting point. “Graham wrote one of my very favorite unproduced pilots ever, which was to the great ‘Star Trek’ show ‘Worf,’ which Graham always described as the ‘Baskets’ of a ‘Star Trek’ show,” Robertson-Dworet tells Gold Derby (watch above). “But I think what it showed me was that he has a really unique sensibility and he brought to that show — which is a very popular world that has been explored and very serious sci-fi tone for a long time — a lot of just sort of surprising comedy. And I think that was what ‘Fallout’ needed and I was very excited to partner with my longtime friend Graham. Paramount Pictures has a few successful franchises, but the studio's apparent inability to do more with Star Trek is beyond confusing.
When J.J. Abrams relaunched the franchise in 2009, the stage was set for it to become a mainstream property, something which looked increasingly likely when the sequels - Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond - were also moderate box office hits. Unfortunately, Star Trek 4 has been stuck in development hell for several years.
Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Matt Shakman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are just some of the names who have been attached to the movie in recent years, with none of them ultimately sticking around.
Now, with it seemingly no closer to becoming a reality, it seems Paramount's next prequel project is finally taking shape.

It’s been over a month since Prime Video launched the first season of the Fallout series, but the streaming giant is now looking to expand into the realm of gaming even further. Not only has Amazon given the go-ahead for Season 2 of the hit TV show, but it has also announced that another franchise will be getting its own adaptation.
Sure, Tomb Raider has had a few live-action adaptations in the past in the world of cinema, but with a talented name like Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached to the upcoming series, it could prove to be another successful attempt by the streaming service.

Does Walton Goggins smell an Emmy approaching? Probably not, but only because his character in Amazon Prime Video’s hit “Fallout” TV series doesn’t have a nose. But nevertheless, his performance is earning rave reviews and awards voters are known to love a transformation. Goggins spent hours in the makeup chair before almost every shoot to turn into The Ghoul, a lone-wolf wastelander who’s been around for hundreds of years. In an interview with Deadline Studio at Prime Experience, Goggins acknowledged the difficulties of taking on this character physically and emotionally.
“The very first time we did the application [of his mask],” Goggins said, “I asked to be left alone for an hour and a half outside and Jonah [Nolan] came by. I just sat outside by myself and just photographed it like in the sun and in the shade. I was extremely intimidated but excited to see how this Ferrari would work.

Despite Fallout taking place in the aftermath of a nuclear war, it’s truly not the end of the world for the Prime Video series, which has many miles to go.

Watch the interview here and see photos from the event below.
With a Season 2 order under its belt, as well as becoming the most watched Amazon Prime series launch ever per Nielsen with 2.9 billion minutes viewed, Robertson-Dworet says they’ll now “be able to get to so much more that we love about the Fallout world.”
