The diversity of animated features — both content and assembly — continues to evolve in lockstep with filmmaking technology’s almost daily leaps and bounds. This ever-changing landscape creates new challenges and opportunities for directors to tell stories that encapsulate everything from epic blockbuster spectacles to personal, relationship-driven dramas.
“Animation is such a powerful medium in exploring complicated themes in an easily accessible way,” says Pixar director Domee Shi, whose “Turning Red” tells the coming-of-age story of Mei, a 13-year-old girl in 2000s-era Toronto, who turns into a giant red panda at the onset of puberty. “I think animation also almost tricks the audience into believing magical logic a little bit more, because it’s already an abstracted version of reality.”
In a process that took more than four years, Shi utilized some of the industry’s most cutting-edge technologies to progressively expand her team of collaborators, from two co-writers (Sarah Streicher...

The island experiment is over as Amazon has canceled its Prime Video series The Wilds after two seasons. According to Deadline, the cast and crew of the young adult survival series were informed of the decision on Thursday, July 28. The teen drama debuted on December 11, 2020, and earned a quick renewal following a positive fan response. Created by Sarah Streicher and developed and produced by the late Jamie Tarses, The Wilds centered on a group of teenage girls who are left stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash but are unaware they are the subjects of a social experiment. Season 2 introduced a group of teenage boys that were part of the same experiment on another island — the season ended on a cliffhanger bringing the two groups together. The cast features Sophia Ali,...

“The Wilds” will be taking off from the runway for Season 3: Prime Video has canceled the popular YA survival series after two seasons, TheWrap has confirmed.
Season 2, which expanded the show’s narrative with the addition of an all-male high school “control group,” premiered on the streamer May 6, delayed by two-and-a-half years as a result of the pandemic.
Despite having premiered a year earlier, the series has drawn comparisons with the Emmy-nominated “Yellowjackets” (which began development and shooting on its pilot around the same time in 2020) for its focus on a group of girls who get stranded following a plane crash. That’s where the two shows’ similarities end: The misfortune the high schoolers in “The Wilds” face stems from a larger conspiracy experiment led by Dawn of Eve founder Gretchen Klein (Rachel Griffiths), who posits that women can run a better society against all obstacles. It's game over for The Wilds.
Deadline reports that Prime Video has canceled the buzzy drama after two seasons.
The series burst onto the screen in 2020, landing a speedy renewal and rave reviews.
As the first YA series on the streaming service, it broke through in a way many shows that followed it did not.
However, the second season premiered in May, failing to reach its predecessor's success.
Season 2 of The Wilds continued to follow the harrowing ordeal of a group of teenage girls stranded on a deserted island, and they didn't end up there by accident - they've secretly been recruited into an elaborate social experiment.
The season ratchets up the drama by revealing that the girls aren't the only ones being studied... there's a new set of subjects, an island of teenage boys, who must also fight for survival under the watchful eye of the experiment's puppet master.

The minds of teenage girls have always beguiled us. From the Salem witch trials to the Satanic Panic to the college rape crisis, young women’s memories have been weaponized, dissected, repurposed, debated. But the experiences of this group are rarely earnestly considered without agenda.
It naturally follows that much media about and for teenage girls approaches them shallowly. Notably, “Euphoria,” perhaps this season’s most popular series about teenage girls, only managed to keep its protagonist, Rue — whose arc is inspired by writer Sam Levinson’s own life — three-dimensional. Its other young women were sacrificed to inane stories of romance and cattiness.
Luckily, change has been coming. A few recent shows have demonstrated some much-needed interest in the teen girl psyche. Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Amazon Prime’s “The Wilds” and Freeform’s “Cruel Summer” all center young women’s experiences. These girls are often unreliable narrators, and their accounts...

For “The Wilds” writers, executive producers and showrunners Sarah Streicher and Amy B. Harris, the island on which a group of teen women — and in Season 2, a control group of adolescent boys — are trapped (as unwilling participants in a twisted sociological experiment) is a metaphor for coming of age, which, Harris told TheWrap, is “very dark for a lot of people.”
“And the idea that you can be seen and that a story that you relate to or feels like it’s a part of what you went through — even if it’s dark — deserves, I think, to be told,” she added.
When the Prime Video show premiered in late 2020, it unraveled a complex survivalist narrative featuring young women in hostile opposition to their surrounding environment, themselves and often each other. They were forced to learn how to hunt, build shelter and make peace with their horrifying newfound situation. Season...

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. In the case of "The Wilds," things get way worse, like comically bad. The second season of the teen survivalist story, which hit Prime Video on May 6, shows the group fighting extreme physical and mental exhaustion while gradually uncovering the Dawn of Eve experiment that's the cause of their suffering. There's also the introduction of male castaways, unknowing participants of the Twilight of Adam program. Though both groups collectively rebel by the end, escape is not yet earned.
The cast similarly experienced successes and obstacles while filming the challenging season. Sarah Pidgeon, who plays Leah Rilke, and Reign Edwards, who plays Rachel Reid, spoke to Popsugar about bonding with their costars, shaping their characters, and shooting their most difficult scenes.
Pidgeon continues to portray the group's relentless whistleblower, but in season two, Leah questions her judgment as she experiences vivid hallucinations.

It’s hard to believe that by the Season 1 finale of “The Wilds” two years ago, the eight teenage girls left to fend for themselves on a remote island after a plane crash had only been stranded for three weeks. The Amazon Prime Video series creator Sarah Streicher’s well-written script and excellent casting made this series one of the most talked-about in 2020, and its second season is has been hotly anticipated ever since. Although we’ve seen versions of this premise before, what makes “The Wilds” unique is that it’s clear from the start that what we’re witnessing is an experiment.
Social scientist Gretchen Klein (Rachel Griffiths) has one goal: to prove that a matriarchal-led society is more efficient and less violent than our current Western male-dominated one. So she sets out to prove her hypothesis with a ridiculously well-funded and carefully orchestrated social experiment disguised as...

“Once upon a time, two plane crashes were staged. All of the victims were dosed and stranded on two islands.”
So begins “The Wilds” Season 2 trailer, confirming the cliffhanger ending of the first Prime Video season, which premiered in December 2020.
The gendered social experiment “The Rise of Eve” led to the discovery of the all-male “control group,” which eerily mirrors the girls’ group, consisting of Sarah Pidgeon, Helena Howard, Mia Healey, Erana James, Sophia Taylor Ali, Shannon Berry, Reign Edwards, and Jenna Clause.
“Brothers and Sisters” alum Rachel Griffiths stars as the mastermind scientist behind the boundary-pushing experiment to create a utopia.
“The Wilds” is created by Sarah Streicher, and Season 2 premieres May 6 on Prime Video. The first trailer for the second season shows that the boys’ group, dubbed “The Fall of Adam,” is now at the center of the “Lord of the Flies”-esque series.

Queensland has snared the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds from across the ditch.
Thanks to $9.8 million from the Federal Government and support from theQueensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy, the ABC Signature series, starring Aussies Rachel Griffiths, Mia Healey and Shannon Berry, will shoot on the Gold Coast in April. The expectation is the production will create 270 jobs for cast and crew and add $73 million to the local economy.
The young adult drama is the second international production announced for Australia this week via the government’s Location Incentive Program, with Netflix’s God’s Favourite Idiot set to shoot in Nsw’s Northern Rivers.
Since the government topped up the incentive with $400 million last July, the program has attracted 11 productions, with the others Australian Survivor, The Tourist, Thirteen Lives, Escape From Spiderhead, Pieces of Her, Blacklight, Irreverent, Joe Exotic and Young Rock.
Created by Sarah Streicher and showrun by Amy B.

One of the last series produced by Jamie Tarses, who passed away this morning at the age of 56, was Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds. It premiered when Tarses was in a coma following an early fall cardiac episode that ultimately led to her death.
The Wilds, Amazon’s first YA series, was a breakout hit and was quickly renewed for a second season. And while Tarses was not able to celebrate the show’s success, her input played a key part in it from the start.
Created by Sarah Streicher, The Wilds was originally ordered to pilot in the spring of 2018 as one of new head Jennifer Salke’s first greenlight decisions.
“I’d never had a pilot produced before, so I felt like a babe in the woods through every step of the development process,” Streicher recalls. “But Jamie had strength and wisdom to spare, and she gave of it so liberally,...

Amazon Prime’s The Wilds is returning for more dystopic slumber-party drama.

Not to get too “12 Days of Christmas” about it, but on Amazon Prime Video’s “The Wilds” there are nine female leads, six female directors, four female executive producers, four female writers, and a female stunt coordinator. It’s a series by women, for women, and about women — and given the rigors of the emotional subject manner and the YA audience’s bloodhound instinct for phoniness, using a cast and crew composed of people who have actually been teenage girls makes perfect sense.
It shouldn’t be that audacious, and yet it feels like it is. It also breaks boundaries because of the cross-genre storytelling — it’s both a survival tale and a coming-of-age story — and the fact that many of the characters are forced to deal with intersectional bias in their arcs.
The logline is deceptively simple: Nine teenage girls are, ostensibly,...

On the surface, “The Wilds” is about a group of troubled teenage girls who are en route to a female empowerment retreat in Kona, Hawaii, when their plane crashes. They wind up on a deserted tropical island in the middle of nowhere and are forced to join together to survive, despite their disparate backgrounds and personalities.
That is, in fact, about 30 percent of what “The Wilds” is about. But creator Sarah Streicher’s work is more “Euphoria” than “Lost,” and more “The Usual Suspects” than “Lord of the Flies.”

Not long after they’ve crash landed on a remote beach with no help in sight, the teen girl castaways of “The Wilds” put their situation into a perspective they can understand. Brainstorming a way to signal for help, pragmatic leader Dot (Shannon Berry) tosses surly athlete Rachel (Reign Edwards) a makeup mirror from one of their sea-drenched suitcases, insisting that she take it on their hike to reflect the sunlight back into the sky. “I saw them do it on ‘Bear Grylls,'” Dot shrugs, which is good enough for Rachel. As “The Wilds” likes to remind us at every given opportunity, these girls may be resilient, but they’re also just teenagers who were busy dealing with angst and trauma until they stumbled into this bizarre and terrifying new reality. If making it through this experience alive means recalling some bit of expertise from marathoning “Survivor” back home,...

Growing up is hard. Anybody who has made it far enough to look back knows that's true.
Amazon's first Young Adult series comes from creator/executive producer Sarah Streicher, executive producer/showrunner Amy B. Harris, and executive producers Jamie Tarses and Dylan Clark.
Featuring a female-driven story and a winning ensemble cast of impressive young women with a stunning turn from Rachel Griffiths, The Wilds, at first, seems like a combination of a gender-switched Lord of the Flies and ABC's Lost.
But at its core, The Wilds is all about growing up female and how easily young women can be beaten down and turned around despite family and friends' best intentions to keep them grounded.
The Wilds introduces us to eight young women on their way to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a retreat called "The Dawn of Eve," but before they ever get there, their plane crashes into the ocean,...

Leah has her head buried in a book. Fatin’s makeup is perfect. Martha is worried about her best friend, Toni, who seems increasingly angry. Nora is quiet. Her athletic sister, Rachel, is diligently measuring her food on an app that makes her iPhone double as a scale. Shelby is blonde and sunny. Dot is confrontational. Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds after an airplane crash strands them on a deserted island.

Sullivan will portray Dr. Daniel Faber, an FBI trauma specialist. He’s a pro at putting his interviewees at ease and extracting valuable information from them.
