The BBC has released the trailer for series two of the hit Belfast-based police drama ‘Blue Lights.’

Co-created and written by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson and produced by Two Cities Television, Blue Lights is an authentic, gripping and darkly funny drama about ordinary people doing an extraordinary job.

Series one, which aired in March last year, followed three new Psni probationary recruits as they navigated their way through their first few months in a uniquely complex place to be a response police officer. It was recently commissioned for two more series.

European Film Promotion has revealed the 10 emerging actors who will take part in the 27th edition of European Shooting Stars program, which promotes European acting talent. Past Shooting Stars have included Carey Mulligan, Alicia Vikander, Maisie Williams and Riz Ahmed.

From Feb. 16-19, the actors will be presented to the international press and industry, and the German public at the Berlin Film Festival. One of the highlights will be the Shooting Stars Awards Ceremony on Feb. 19 at the Berlinale Palast.

You’ve got to admire comedian Patrick Kielty for putting his neck on the line in his first dramatic role. In Prasanna Puwanarajah’s directorial debut, Kielty plays Shane, a budding standup who can painstakingly recount favourite scenes from Only Fools and Horses but has no discernible comic skill of his own. Far from being a deranged Rupert Pupkin figure, Shane harbours a troubled past, which makes him well placed for some odd-couple bonding with Eileen (Seána Kerslake), an acerbic young cabby who ferries him each week from his self-imposed exile in the coastal village of Ballywalter to his comedy course in Belfast. “The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, led the nominations for the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) as the full list of nominees was unveiled on Monday night local time, picking up 11 nods in the film category.

“Bad Sisters” – Sharon Horgan’s Apple TV+ mystery series – led the pack in the drama category with 12 noms.

Coming off the back of a stellar year for Irish film and television, the nominations include a number of familiar names and titles, including Paul Mescal, who has been nominated for best lead actor in a film for “Aftersun” and best supporting actor in a film for “God’s Creatures” while Farrell is also competing in both categories, both for his star turn in “Banshees” and his supporting role as Penguin in “The Batman.”

With just a few days until the 2023 Oscars, hot contender The Banshees of Inisherin has been given a boost on home soil.

Martin McDonagh’s period tragicomedy — which has nine Academy Award nominations (an all-time Irish record) — has now landed the most film nods this year for the Irish Academy Awards.

Announced by the Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA), Banshees has 11 nominations, including best film and, as with the BAFTAs and Oscars, the film has been nominated in all of the performance categories for its main cast of Colin Farrell (who also got a nod for supporting actor for The Batman), Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon. Banshees‘ 11 nominations is the same number in 2022 amassed by Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl, which is now also in contention for an Oscar in the international category.

Further down the list, Frank Berry’s immigration drama Aisha — starring Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor — landed 10 nominations.

Eighteen projects have been awarded a total of £931,656 from the UK Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf) through its international coproduction and international distribution financing strands.

The £7m fund was launched in April by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) as a one-year pilot initiative to boost international development and distribution opportunities for the UK’s independent screen sector following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. It is administered by the British Film Institute (BFI) and is available to companies working in film, TV, documentary, animation and interactive content.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival lineup may yet again be thin on British movies but UK public financiers the BFI, Film4 and BBC Film have joined with the British Council to launch the fourth edition of their ‘Great 8’ program, which will showcase emerging Brit filmmakers to international distributors and fest programmers. In previous years, the ‘Great 8’ was launched during the physical Cannes festival but this year the event will be streamed on June 17 in advance of the Cannes virtual market at the end of the month. Buyers and festival programmers will have exclusive access to unseen footage from each of the titles, which will be introduced by their filmmakers and made available across five different time zones.

Tom Sullivan’s Great Famine drama Arracht and Paddy Breathnach’s homelessness story Rosie lead the film nominations at the 2020 Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) awards.

Dathaí Keane is shooting a new family thriller starring Dervla Kirwan and Seána Kerslake in the lead roles. Ireland’s pubcaster RTÉ has commissioned a brand-new TV series, which began principal photography in County Clare on 10 February. The production, entitled Smother, has been penned by writer Kate O’Riordan (the TV series The Bay and Mr Selfridge) and is being directed by Dathaí Keane. Keane is best known for his TV series An Klondike (2015-2017) and his debut feature, Finky (2019), which won the Best Cinematography Award at the Galway Film Fleadh and was part of Black Nights’ First Feature Competition last year. The Stranger actress Dervla Kirwan has landed the lead role in Smother, the noir thriller produced by BBC Studios for Irish broadcaster RTÉ.

Kirwan, who features as the recurring character Corrine Price in Netflix’s The Stranger, will play family matriarch Val Ahern in Smother, which is penned by The Spanish Princess and Mr Selfridge writer Kate O’Riordan.

Ahern’s partner is found dead at the foot of a cliff the morning after a family party and as she unravels the circumstances that led to his demise, she discovers how his controlling, manipulative behavior impacted his children and siblings.

Seána Kerslake (A Date for Mad Mary) stars as single mother Sarah O’Neill, who moves into a dilapidated farmhouse near a remote village in rural Ireland with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey), after fleeing an abusive relationship with the boy’s father. One night, Chris disappears and Sarah worries that he might have fallen into an enormous sinkhole that has suddenly opened up in the woods, especially when she finds one of his toys near the edge. The next day, Chris turns up safe and sound, but his behaviour is subtly changed and Sarah becomes increasingly worried that the boy is not her son.

Stephen Merchant’s solo directorial debut Fighting With My Family leads the openers at the UK box office this weekend, and will look to dethrone three-time champion The Lego Movie 2 from the summit.

Impressively realised and clearly punching above its weight in terms of budget The Hole in the Ground, despite its flaws, is a solid addition to the Irish cinematic landscape and to the horror genre as a…whole.

Smart and stylish, the first act is full of suggestion and an ominous sense of suspense, thanks in no small part to the taut score by Stephen McKeon. Then comes the emotionally autumnal colour palette, claustrophobically framed close-ups and some sweeping aerial tracking shots (a la Stanley Kubrick’s epic opening from The Shining), all of which tell you two things pretty quickly: 1) this is a well made film and 2) something bad is going to happen.

"The Golden Raspberry Awards, known as the Razzies, has become an irreverent staple of awards season. The Razzies celebrate the worst in film, awarding prizes to Worst Film, Worst Actor, etc. and are largely considered to be goofy harmless fun, but recent accusations suggest that these raspberries may be far from golden. They may in fact be (wait for it) Rigged!

This Irish supernatural horror thriller The Hole in The Ground is currently screening at Sundance, and the buzz for this film is big! A lot of people are talking about how good and scary it is. This is apparently the horror movie of the year that you don’t want to miss.
