David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Human Resources is an adult animated series created by Jennifer Flackett, Kelly Galuska, Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll and Mark Levin.
From the “wicked” world of Big Mouth comes the second season of this very badass series that turns this (professional) mischief into something fun, at least for a few minutes. Whether one gets tired of it or not is up to the viewer.
Human Resources
Absurd and crude, great in some of its dialogues, reflective… Human Resources continues with its tone of ludicrous parody that mixes The Office with Big Mouth itself and that, yes, manages to amuse in a South Park style, with that humor that you either love or hate but that, at least, has the honesty to try, in its provocative style, many times, just for the sake of it.
And other times, perhaps not by chance, in that provocation it finds the perfect formula to tell us something totally coherent.

The Hormone Monsters are coming back for more this summer as "Human Resources" season 2 is debuting very soon on Netflix. The "Big Mouth" spin-off is returning for another round of filthy, animated shenanigans next month, and we've got a brand new trailer to get fans hyped for what's to come. It's dirty, inappropriate, and actually has a touch of sweetness to it. But mostly filthy, let's be clear.
The series was created by the all-star team of Kelly Galuska, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett, and Nick Kroll. Meanwhile, the flagship series "Big Mouth" is set to end with season 8 on Netflix, but the spin-off lives on for at least one more season, even as the main show is bringing it in for a landing. Though it will conclude its run as Netflix's longest-running scripted series ever, which is no small thing. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves or off-topic here.

“Human Resources” follows the creatures that help people through the awkward journey of puberty and the hard life of parenthood. Even as they assist their human clients, the hormone monsters, depression kitties, shame wizards and other creatures lead hilarious lives of their own, both in and out of the office.
Season 2 will also star Sam Richardson, Niecy Nash-Betts and Jason Mantzoukas along with returning guest stars Hugh Jackman, Pamela Adlon, Rosie Perez, Henry Winkler, Thandiwe Newton, Jemaine Clement, Maria Bamford, Bobby Cannavale and Cole Escola. Hollywood writers picketing to preserve pay and job security outside major studios and streamers braced for a long fight at the outset of a strike that immediately forced late-night shows into hiatus, put other productions on pause and had the entire industry slowing its roll.
The first Hollywood strike in 15 years commenced Tuesday as the 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America stopped working when their contract expired.
The union is seeking higher minimum pay, more writers per show and less exclusivity on single projects, among other demands — all conditions it says have been diminished in the content boom of the streaming era.
“Everything’s changed, but the money has changed in the wrong direction,” said Kelly Galuska, 39, a writer for “ The Bear ” on FX and “Big Mouth” on Netflix, who picketed at Fox Studios in Los Angeles with her 3-week-old daughter. “It’s a turning point in the industry right now.

"Human Resources," the "Big Mouth" spin-off show that centers around the Hormone Monsters, Shame Wizards, and Depression Kitties that dominate humans' brains, will soon be back for a second season and appears to be continuing in its tradition of having A-list talent voicing some of the office's emotional and/or hormonal denizens.

Puberty can only last so long.
“Big Mouth” has been renewed for Season 8 at Netflix, which will be the animated comedy’s final installation. Additionally, “Big Mouth” spinoff “Human Resources” will end with its previously greenlit second season.
This makes “Big Mouth” Netflix’s longest running original series, excluding kids and family programming. Previously, “Grace and Frankie” and “Orange Is the New Black” shared that title with seven seasons each.
Inspired by the childhoods of co-creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, “Big Mouth” follows a group of friends and their hormone monsters as they navigate adolescence, human sexuality and coming of age. Kroll starred alongside John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas and Ayo Edebiri (whose role was originally played by Jenny Slate). Season 6 debuted in 2022, while Season 7 will come in 2023 and 2024.
“Human Resources” is set in the world of the hormone monsters from “Big Mouth,” where different monsters are assigned to govern human emotions.

Human Resources follows the world of monsters associated with human emotions introduced in Netflix’s other adult animated sitcom, Big Mouth. The workplace comedy involves monsters assigned to adults as the representations of their feelings, like the Lovebugs, Logic Rocks, Hormone Monsters, and Ambition Goblins. The penultimate episode of the season, “It’s Almost Over”, follows Yara (Nidah Barber), an ailing grandmother with Alzheimer’s, as Walter the Lovebug (Brandon Kyle Goodman) comes to terms with the loss.

Netflix’s Big Mouth spinoff sees the animated universe’s emotional monsters in a workplace setting as they manage the human “clients” to which they’re assigned. While Big Mouth centers on the nightmares of puberty, Human Resources tackles the complete human life span from birth to death — and this scene delves into the latter, with Amir and daughter Natalie facing the loss of Amir’s mother, Yara. Also at Yara’s deathbed is her lovebug Walter, the personification of that emotion. Showrunner Kelly Galuska notes how the scene balances the emotional weight and the irreverent comedy at the show’s core.
“We really wanted the show to be about the human experience entirely,” Galuska says. While the Hr offices are in the tristate area, it was important to Galuska that the show depict “how people do things in other parts of the world.

“Big Mouth” and “Human Resources” still have some growing up to do. The Netflix animated comedies have been renewed for additional seasons, the streamer announced Monday.
“Big Mouth” has been renewed through Season 7, with Season 6 premiering later this year. Freshman show “Human Resources” has also been renewed for a second season. The news of the renewals came during the shows’ FYC Emmy panel at NeueHouse Hollywood in Los Angeles. In attendance were the shows’ executive producers Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett and Kelly Galuska, along with Randall Park, who stars in “Human Resources.”
Created by Kroll, Goldberg, Levin and Flackett in 2017, “Big Mouth” focuses on a group of friends in middle school struggling with the changes puberty has brought to their lives. One of the show’s central conceits is the existence of “hormone monsters,” which act as representations for the various emotions the preteens experience during puberty.

Netflix tonight announced that it has renewed its animated series Big Mouth for a seventh season, and will bring back its spinoff Human Resources for a second. The former series will be back with new episodes later this year.
Big Mouth is a half-hour adult animated comedy series from creators Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg and Nick Kroll, which watches as teenage friends find their lives upended by the wonders and horrors of puberty. Its series regulars are Kroll, John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Ayo Edebiri and Jessi Klein.
Human Resources pulls back the curtain on the daily lives of the creatures—Hormone Monsters, Depression Kitties, Shame Wizards and many more—that help humans journey through every aspect of life from puberty to parenthood to the twilight years. Why Should I Watch? Shondaland’s hit period drama returns in March with a second season focused on Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest of the high-society family’s offspring, who’s searching for his ideal partner. Get ready for a heated love triangle sure to set fire to a few of fancy gowns.
Bonus Reason: “Bridgerton” was nominated for 12 Emmys in its first well-received season, and Netflix reported the hourlong soap netted enough viewers to rank as the streamer’s second most-watched series of all time. Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater and Clark Duke are set to lead the cast of Netflix’s adult animated conspiracy theory comedy series Inside Job, from Gravity Falls writer Shion Takeuchi and creator Alex Hirsch. Takeuchi and Hirsch revealed the cast today during Netflix’s Adult Animation Studio Focus at the Annecy Animation Festival, which also includes Andrew Daly (Veep), Bobby Lee (MadTV), John Dimaggio (Futurama), Tisha Campbell (Empire) and Brett Gelman (Stranger Thigns).
Inside Job is an adult animated comedy about the shadow government – and the dysfunctional team whose daily grind is committing the world’s conspiracies. From convoluted coverups to secret societies to masked orgy etiquette, navigating office culture at Cognito Inc. can be tricky, especially for anti-social tech genius Reagan Ridley. Even in a workplace filled with reptilian shapeshifters and psychic mushrooms, she’s seen as the odd one out for believing the world could be a better place.

Last summer, Netflix comedy Big Mouth proved a change leader in the world of animation, following its decision to recast a key voice role, for the sake of more authentic representation. In June, actress Jenny Slate announced that she would be stepping back from voicing the half-Black, half-Jewish character known as Missy, and two months later, it was revealed that Ayo Edebiri would be taking over the part.
On Saturday, co-creator-EPs Mark Levin, Andrew Goldberg, and Jennifer Flackett, and Co-ep Kelly Galuska appeared for a virtual panel, as part of the USC Comedy Festival, discussing their time with the show, and how the recasting of Missy came about.
“It’s very complex, actually, because over the course of several seasons, Missy, as a mixed-race character, has been growing,” Levin said, “and [a lot of that] has been driven by the Black writers on our staff.”

There’s never been a show like “BoJack Horseman.” The Netflix series, which took its final bow on January 31, defied easy categorization from day one with its anthropomorphic reimagining of Hollywoo(d), sharp turns into existential melancholy, cutting jokes, and embrace of all things strange and poignant. It told the interweaving stories of five lost souls — BoJack (Will Arnett), Diane (Alison Brie), Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris), Mr. Peanutbutter (Paul F. Tompkins) and Todd (Aaron Paul) — and the many lives they touched. By its bittersweet end, “BoJack Horseman” represented the best and most ambitious of this decade in television, taking apart timely issues and its characters’ innermost demons with the kind of consideration that remains all too rare.
After writing about “BoJack Horseman” since its beginning, I chose 10 episodes I felt show the series at its best and most representative, and asked creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg to walk me through the process of making them.

Netflix has ordered Human Resources, a spinoff of its animated series Big Mouth that will cover the professional lives of monsters.
If two (soon to be three) seasons of Big Mouth on Netflix have proved nothing else, it's that being a Hormone Monster is hard work. Now viewers will get a deeper look at the noble child shepherding profession.
Netflix has ordered Human Resources, a spinoff of Big Mouth that will take place in the corporate world of the various monsters (mostly of the Hormone variety) that populate the world of the original series. The announcement was made from the Big Mouth season 3 panel at New York Comic Con.
Netflix also provided a short, helpful look at the series, which seems to feature the same animation style as Big Mouth.
Human Resources: We manage people. The next great animated series from the creators of @bigmouth. Coming soon.

The world of Big Mouth is opening wider. As announced Thursday during the show’s panel at New York Comic Con, Netflix has ordered a new animated series titled Human Resources, “a workplace comedy set in the world of the monsters from … Big Mouth.”
For the uninitiated, Big Mouth — which returns for its third season on Friday — follows a group of hormonal youngsters as they navigate the most confusing time in anyone’s life: puberty. For better or worse, their feelings manifest as interloping monsters, resulting in ludicrous characters like the Hormone Monster, the Depression Kitty and even the Shame Wizard.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
