“Queen of the Ring” is a powerful biographical film that tells the incredible story of Mildred “Millie” Burke, a trailblazing wrestler who broke glass ceilings long before it became a cultural catchphrase. The film, directed by Ash Avildsen and based on Jeff Leen’s book, tells the incredible story of a woman who converted wrestling from a male-dominated spectacle to a platform for female athletic prowess.
The film, set in 1930s and 1940s America, depicts Burke’s transformation from a struggling single mother working in a Kansas cafe to the first million-dollar female athlete in history. Her story is nothing short of revolutionary, coming at a time when women’s wrestling was neglected and frequently illegal throughout most of the United States.
Emily Bett Rickards has a standout performance, embodying Burke’s ferocious determination and complex personal life. The film does more than just praise athletic achievement; it also portrays...

Wrestling pics are having a moment. Last year saw the excellent, if unjustly ignored, The Iron Claw, about the ill-fated Von Erich brothers. Now comes Ash Avildsen’s hugely entertaining, old-fashioned biopic about Mildred Burke. If you don’t know who Burke is (and the vast majority probably don’t), this film aims to correct that. A pioneer of the sport who became the first million-dollar female athlete in history, Burke was a three-time women’s world champion from the 1930s through the 1950s, a time when women’s wrestling wasn’t even legal in most of the country. Her story fairly demands to be told, and Queen of the Ring, which served as the opening night film of the 39th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, largely does it justice.

‘Queen of the Ring’ Filmmakers and Bob Mackie Honored at Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival
The 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival opened Nov. 8 with a screening of “Queen of the Ring,” writer-director Ash Avildsen’s biopic of female wrestler Mildred Burke starring Emily Bett Rickards, Josh Lucas, Walton Goggins and Gavin Casalegno. Marking the festival’s 39th year, the film commenced ten days of programming across seven South Florida venues, including the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to costume designer Bob Mackie.
Speaking from the red carpet Friday night, Fliff chair Lisa Grigorian thrilled at this year’s programming. “We are so excited for this year’s festival,” Grigorian said. “We’ve got a hundred films from 35 countries — something for everybody.”
Attending the festival for the first time, “Queen of the Ring” costar Casalegno spoke about what resonated with him in Burke’s true life story. “I really wanted to make films that will make the world a better place, and I wanted to...

In the expansive universe of The CW’s Arrow, some characters had fans rooting for more, while others become points of contention. Amidst a roster of vigilantes, allies, and villains, one character took an unexpected path from a planned one-off appearance to becoming a staple of the show.

Arrow fans know one truth: not all heroes deserved the harsh fate they got. When Greg Berlanti decided to write off Laurel Lance, jaws dropped and tempers flared. After all, why let go of the Black Canary when the show had no shortage of characters—cough obnoxious ones—that could’ve taken her place in the grave?

Fans can’t help but wonder if Berlanti’s decision to axe Laurel instead of giving one particularly irksome character the boot missed the mark. In a series all about redemption and second chances, was taking down Laurel the ultimate missed opportunity? One thing’s for sure: Arrow’s legacy might have looked a whole lot different with a few strategic character swaps.

Throughout its run, the Arrowverse amounted to a total of 699 episodes, which aired across 37 seasons of television, ranging from good to bad and sometimes ugly in terms of quality. Similar was the case with the superhero suits, as while we had some gems with Deathstroke and Flash’s outfits, there were also a healthy number of suits, which didn’t translate well onscreen.

The Flash was a spin-off of the 2012 show, Arrow and a part of the same fictional universe, called the Arrowverse. The show premiered on 7 October 2014 and ran for nine seasons until 24 May 2023. It received a positive response from the audience and even won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama in 2014.
Most fans don’t know that it was originally supposed to be a backdoor pilot, but Grant Gustin’s positive reception by the audience sealed the deal. The actor appeared twice on Arrow and his portrayal of Barry Allen won the audience over. Another aspect that got him the role was Gustin’s chemistry with actress Emily Bett Rickards aka, Felicity. The creators wanted to explore the pair and their possible romance inspired an entire show.

Stephen Amell’s Arrow is one of the most well-received superhero shows on the CW network that started the whole Arrowverse which included Supergirl, The Flash, etc. The series went on for eight successful seasons and Amell’s Oliver Queen went on a great journey, portraying the character’s shades with great conviction.

The classic Western genre wasn’t really known for its complexities; rather, it was known for its linear storyline. Fueled by a revenge-based story, morality drama, and iconic shots of the American frontier, if I’m being honest, Westerns were a simple pleasure for most people. While Calamity Jane does not offer much, it is, in all fairness, a decent twist to the white male-led genre. Starring Emily Bett Rickards as the female gunslinger, this movie follows similar tropes but from a female perspective.

Does Groundhog Day aka February 2 remind you of a certain Harold Ramis film starring a particularly beloved Ghostbuster? Same. But rewinds and replays happen all the time on the small screen as well, plopping favorite characters in perilous time loops that send them on missions to save family members, save themselves, avert tragedies and… defeat a monkey paw? Yes, that too.
From Mulder and Scully’s booming bank bomb and the Green Arrow’s pre-Crisis test, to The Mindy Project‘s never-ending ride on the Hot Mess Express, time loops have become one of TV’s tried-and-true methods of storytelling.

"There's too many of 'em." "It's just more targets..." Goldwyn Films has revealed their trailer for Calamity Jane, a western thriller arriving to watch in February. Currently set for release on VOD in about a week from now. After Wild Bill is killed in a poker game, Calamity Jane must break out of prison and seek revenge before the Deadwood's Sheriff can arrest them. Not to be confused with the actual classic western also called Calamity Jane from 1953 starring Doris Day. Directed by Terry Miles, Calamity Jane reunites Arrow co-stars Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell, who star alongside Tim Rozon, Priscilla Faia, Gage Marsh, Garrett Black, Christian Sloan, Troy Mundle, and Spencer Borgeson. Yes, it has been suggested that the Arrowverse first took flight with Arrow‘s own October 2012 premiere. But truly, it was 14 months later, on Dec. 4, 2013 — when Barry Allen aka the would-be Flash first set foot in Starling City — that TV’s expanded DC universe started to take shape.

I don't think there has been a superhero television series with an as expansive legacy as "Arrow." Premiering on The CW in 2012, the series not only ran for impressive eight seasons but spawned the "Arrowverse," a shared television universe. "Arrow" led to the creation of "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow," and more, with these DC Comics-inspired series regularly crossing over with one another. The show stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, a playboy who returns to his hometown of Star City after presumingly being stranded on a remote island for five years, as the vigilante Green Arrow.
Initially coming out the gate as a dark and gritty take on the Green Arrow mythos, "Arrow" let itself get weird and leaned into its comic book origins for an entertaining, if uneven, superhero show. There is a wide range of quality across the show's entire run, from its attempts to visibly...

Gerald McGrew claims he would like to collect “a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too” for his imaginary zoo in the Dr. Seuss story “If I Ran the Zoo.” It soon became the slang word for someone who is a “square.” Sixty years later, the word “nerd” immediately brings to mind a certain visual: Braces. The remaining competitors are: The 100's Eliza Taylor, Anne With an E's Amybeth McNulty, Arrow's Emily Bett Rickards, Outlander's Caitriona Balfe, Sanditon's Rose Williams, Supergirl's Katie McGrath, Unstoppable's Barbara Lopez, and Wynonna...

While broadcast networks struggle to decide what to do with all the TV series that didn’t manage to finish production on their current seasons before the coronavirus outbreak forced them to wrap things up early, they’re simultaneously trying to sort out the situation with their shows that aren’t even shows yet, a.k.a. pilots.
During “TheWrap’s Survival Guide for TV Pilot Season” webinar on Tuesday, TheWrap’s TV editor Tony Maglio spoke with “Will & Grace” creator Max Mutchnick, “Arrow” star Katherine McNamara and “Good Girls” producer Carla Banks-Waddles about the state that each of their respective broadcast pilots were in when the Covid-19 pandemic grounded filming on all the potential series earlier this month — and how they’re trying to keep working on those projects during the shutdown.

This January, Arrow came to an end after eight seasons, with the series finale unsurprisingly proving to be an emotional affair. Following the Emerald Archer’s death in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the episode revolved around Oliver Queen’s funeral, with many faces from the show’s past returning for the occasion. Even characters long since dead were able to come back, thanks to Oliver rebooting the timeline.
Just a few of the cameos included Susanna Thompson, Colin Donnell and Sea Shimooka as Moira Queen, Tommy Merlyn and Emiko Queen, three folks who were still alive in this new reality. Elsewhere, former allies like Joe Dinicol’s Ragman and the al Ghul sisters – Talia (Lex Doig) and Nyssa (Katrina Law) – dropped by Star City to pay their respects. And, best of all, Emily Bett Rickards came back after a season away to reunite with her husband in the afterlife.

Arrow completed its eight-season run in January, marking the end of the show that birthed the Arrowverse in the first place. As such, many iconic DC heroes appeared on the series over the years, but star Stephen Amell still has one that he wished had showed up. Apparently, the Emerald Archer actor wanted Supernatural star Jensen Ackles to turn up as Batman.
Amell attended C2E2 2020 in Chicago over the weekend, alongside co-star Emily Bett Rickards, and a fan question during a Q&a asked him to name the one character that he regrets never appeared on Arrow. He immediately jumped to the idea of his old pal Ackles boarding the series as the Dark Knight himself, saying:
“We could have had Jensen Ackles come on as Batman but only if people wanted to have an awesome time,” Amell said. “I would have liked the whole Bruce Wayne of it all.

It's official: The CW's Arrow has ended after eight seasons of crime-fighting. On Jan. 28, the series finale premiered and tied up various loose ends following the death of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. It shows how Oliver's sacrifice brought back loved ones who initially died throughout the course of Arrow, including Oliver's mom, Moira (Susanna Thompson), and his best friend, Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell). We also get a tear-jerking appearance from Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), who returns to attend Oliver's funeral and see her grown-up daughter from the future.
But there's one particular scene that has fans very excited. John Diggle (David Ramsey), who is preparing to move to Metropolis with wife Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson), is sent flying into the air when a meteor-like object crashes in front of his house. He approaches the rubble only to find a small box, and when he opens it,...

It wasn't just Oliver and Felicity who got the most perfect ending in Tuesday's series finale of Arrow. Before Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) met up with Oliver (Stephen Amell) in the afterlife, back in the office where he first saw her, we got to say at least a short goodbye or even a "see you later" to almost everyone we've ever loved from Star City and beyond. It would be fairly easy, in fact, to see most of those characters later, since the majority of Arrow's main characters have already gotten to appear on or at least interact with characters from other CW superhero shows. There are already five on the air including The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning,...

Whenever a TV show that has gone on for long enough ends in a planned finale, it’s typical for many of its previous supporting characters to make cameo appearances, and the very final episode of Arrow was no exception. In fact, here’s a full rundown of everyone who was featured.
First off, there’s Team Arrow. The group has varied in size and members over the years, but its current lineup of Diggle, there from the very beginning, and Dinah, Laurel and Rene, each a fixture since season 5, were the ones to see it through to the end.
The episode’s flashbacks were an appropriate choice given their prominent use in the show’s narrative, and allowed for Oliver’s participation in the finale. This being his show, it would feel wrong for its ending to not feature him, despite him being dead. The first brought us back to season 2 episode “Seeing Red,...

Arrow reached its series finale last night and one of the most discussed elements of it was the emotional ending it granted Oliver Queen and the love of his life, Felicity Smoak. Emily Bett Rickards left the show as a regular at the end of season 7, so the couple were kept apart throughout season 8. However, the actress returned for the last episode, which allowed for the Queens to get a bittersweet, tear-jerking reunion.
As teased in the season 7 finale, in 2040, an older Felicity is escorted by the Monitor to someplace where she can finally be with Oliver again. Felicity arrives in another realm that appears to be Ollie’s office in the Queen Consolidated building, from the series’ early years. In other words, the first place Oliver laid eyes on his future wife (as seen in a flashback in season 3). She and Oliver shared a kiss and looked out the window,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the “Arrow” series finale.
In the aftermath of Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) death, the CW’s “Arrow” ended with a relatively happy ending.
The post-“Crisis” world revealed that Oliver’s death had indeed been a spark that saved his city, which was now crime-free. Additionally, nearly everyone whom Oliver lost over the years — including his mother Moira (Susanna Thompson), best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell), and foe-turned-friend Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) — was revived. An exception to the rule was Oliver’s father, Robert (Jamey Sheridan), about whom the Queen family speculated that only things that didn’t change the titular hero could be undone.
Undoing, to a degree, past key emotional moments was a delicate line to toe, the “Arrow” team admits.
“One thing we didn’t want to do was invalidate the entire series. There’s 169 episodes...

The CW’s Arrow wrapped its eight-season run on Tuesday with a series finale that paid tribute to (and was partially set in) the past… mined the present for big emotions… and planted seeds for several characters’ futures.
Weeks after the events of Crisis, Oliver’s friends and family — a resurfaced Thea, Roy and Rory/Ragman included — gathered in Star City for the hero’s private funeral. But before any heads could be bowed in sad reverence, there was one final mission to take on: the corralling of John Byrne, an old name from Oliver’s “list” who was seeking...

Arrow Season 8 Episode 10
After eight seasons, and many earths, Oliver Queen has been laid to rest and Arrow is finally over. It can be difficult to stick the landing on something like that, especially after such a stellar final season. Unfortunately, after two deaths and a few memorials during Crisis on Infinite Earths, Arrow itself struggled to come up with much new to say about Oliver Queen’s legacy and the end of the show that started it all. While there will surely be fans who have a good solid cry over it or enjoy the allusion to Diggle as the Green Lantern, that feels woefully inadequate compared to the high standard season 8 has set.

Well, the day has finally come. Tonight, The CW airs the final ever episode of Arrow. Much has changed on the show over the past eight seasons, but someone who’s been there every step of the way – even if her character has changed drastically – is Katie Cassidy, who plays Laurel Lance Aka Black Canary.
Ahead of the series finale, the actress has taken to Twitter to thank all of the fans who have been watching the series for the best part of a decade. Cassidy shared a video from TV Guide in which she and her co-stars Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), David Ramsey (John Diggle), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake) and Rick Gonzalez (Rene Ramirez) send messages to the fandom. Alongside this, the star offered her own extended words about the “bittersweet” experience of saying goodbye to Arrow.

Here we go, Emerald Archer fans. After eight seasons, Arrow is coming to an end. Last week’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” conclusion featured the second and ultimate death of Oliver Queen, but there’s still two episodes of the original Arrowverse show to go. Tomorrow brings us the backdoor pilot for Green Arrow and the Canaries and then we have the big one, the series finale. And from these photos, it looks like we can expect an emotional, star-studded hour.
As has long been confirmed, Emily Bett Rickards is returning as Oliver’s wife Felicity Smoak for the finale. These pics promise it’ll be a substantial comeback for her, too, as it looks like she’ll be the heart of the episode. What’s more, several other ex-members of Team Arrow will also be dropping by Star City. Thea Queen (Willa Holland) and Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) are depicted reuniting,...

The conclusion of Crisis On Infinite Earths hit us with two very different, but equally compelling, hours. The first largely continued the end-times vibe of the Crisis thus far, as the Paragons tried to thwart history and eventually faced the Anti-Monitor at the dawn of time, while the second brought us back to a unified earth with some major edits, and the playful tone that makes Legends of Tomorrow such a continual delight. The fights themselves were a bit weak, but the cameos and easter eggs were strong, and this thing had its heart in all the right places.

In less than a month, Arrow will conclude its eight-season run with an emotional farewell to Oliver Queen, the hero who not only saved the fictional Arrowverse on several occasions but also carried the franchise through thick and thin.
Frankly, we’d known for a while that the emotional goodbye was coming, but the idea that in just a couple of weeks, diehard fans will have to watch the last episode of the show, ever, is somewhat heart-wrenching. Not to mention that considering the fact that Oliver is supposed to perish in the upcoming hours of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” we’re still unsure as to how the writers are going to handle his last farewell in both the penultimate and final episode of Arrow.

“Crisis On Infinite Earths” is only a day away, seeing the worlds of the Arrowverse collide in the biggest and most ambitious crossover yet. Despite the scope of events already planned, the stories playing out beneath the red sky won’t be limited to just what we see on TV, but will also be extended to comics.
It’s an appropriate move to have tales take place within the four-color realm, since “Crisis” itself originated in such a medium. Even more than that, both 100-page issues of the comics will be co-written by Marv Wolfman, who penned the original 12-part series that the crossover has taken as its inspiration, and will feature stories revolving around four Arrowverse characters, largely not part of the litany already confirmed to appear.
