Before playing the most high-profile concert of his career, Josh Meloy had a routine to keep.
Outside his dressing room, the backstage halls at the Criterion, a mid-sized rock room in downtown Oklahoma City and benchmark for up-and-coming bands passing through, were nearly as crowded as the sold-out venue itself. This was in early February, and Meloy was headlining the 3,300-capacity room for the first time, with parents, wives, children, aunts, uncles, cousins — anybody considered family to Meloy and his five-piece band — all welcome. It created the type of chaos...

Sturgill Simpson has announced the “Who the F**k is Johnny Blue Skies? 2025 Tour,” a lengthy US run taking place from April to late May.
Billed after Simpson’s new stage name, Johnny Blue Skies — which he employed for the release of his excellent 2024 return album, Passage Du Desir — his spring 2025 tour will make its way through a handful of US cities that Simpson missed on his fall 2024 run.
The trek also includes appearances at Texas’ Two Step Inn and California’s Stagecoach Festival, as well as a pair of shows in Asheville, North Carolina — which were re-scheduled from his 2024 tour after Hurricane Helene hit. For this tour, Simpson has promised that there will be “No openers. If you’re on time, you’re late.”

Let us put our hands together and bow our heads in silence as we reflect on the news that The Righteous Gemstones will end with Season 4 at HBO. The final episodes of the series begin streaming in March.

Gareth Edwards' underrated sci-fi film finds streaming success two years after its release. The British filmmaker made his feature directorial debut and first rose to prominence with his 2010 sci-fi horror film, Monsters, an independent production made on a small budget of $500,000, with Edwards also serving as the cinematographer, production designer, and a visual effects artist. From there, he graduated on to directing the big-budget monster movie, 2014's Godzilla, which served as the first film in Legendary's Monsterverse franchise.
Next, Edwards took on one of the most highly coveted jobs in Hollywood, directing a Star Wars movie. He helmed Rogue One, which experienced a troubled production, and it was co-writer Tony Gilroy who oversaw the film's extensive reshoots. After that, Edwards didn't direct a film for seven years until his own original sci-fi epic, The Creator, in 2023. Next up, Edwards has joined another major film franchise, having directed the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth,...

Jim Jarmusch's 2019 horror comedy The Dead Don't Die is now streaming on Netflix, but what is going on with the Sturgill Simpson song in the movie? The Dead Don't Die stars Adam Driver among its incredibly star-studded cast, which also includes the likes of Selena Gomez, Bill Murray, Austin Butler, and Tilda Swinton, among others. Although The Dead Don't Die is technically a zombie movie and follows some familiar beats, it also breaks with that genre in myriad ways because, at its core, The Dead Don't Die is really a parody of zombie movies.
The Dead Don't Die also provides considerable social commentary—after all, in this movie, the zombies are created due to fracking—which is at times heavy-handed, although it is intentionally so. Overall, these elements of The Dead Don't Die give the movie a bit of a bizarre tone, which has likely contributed to its mixed reception.

Gareth Edwards’ latest movie, The Creator (2023), has been a big hit with audiences. Starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles (in her first-ever acting role), the film has a cool story and stunning visuals. While it’s inspired by classics like Apocalypse Now (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Akira (1988), Edwards still brings something fresh to the table—especially compared to Hollywood’s recent sci-fi flicks. With its top-notch sci-fi vibes and detailed world-building, the movie feels like a breath of fresh air for fans of the genre. However, the narrative falters due to unfortunate editing choices and a lack of depth in character development. Despite these shortcomings, the film remains a worthwhile watch, especially for those tired of the repetitive themes of alien invasions or AI replacing humans. Mind you, Edwards’ creation at least tried to break free from these tired tropes. I...

The American South is a hot mess of cultural contradictions, and while those contradictions have stoked the dumpster fire of U.S. politics for a couple of centuries, they also happen to be fueling some of the best music being made right now. And to be sure, the story of rock in 2024 is largely a story of Southern rock, in both classic-rock and indie-rock denominations.

Hulu’s It’s All Country, which premieres on November 15th, is a six-part documentary series that celebrates and examines current country music. The series, hosted by Luke Bryan, one of the most famous names in the genre, blends casual talks, live performances, and behind-the-scenes peeks into the lives of artists like Luke Combs, Wynonna Judd, and Mickey Guyton.
The show is about the individuals as much as the music, covering issues ranging from the evolution of country music to its cultural relevance. While the series’ slick production and upbeat tone make it easy to consume, it occasionally feels like a polished highlight reel rather than an in-depth investigation.
Luke Bryan’s warmth and charisma as a host adds to the series’ appeal. His rich roots in country music and easy interaction with guests authenticate the conversations. However, Bryan’s talent as a performer does not always translate into journalistic rigor.

Taylor Swift has made a major donation to non-profit organization Feeding America to aid in recovery efforts from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. According to Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, the $5 million donation will go assist in essential food and water distribution.
“Together, we can make a real impact in supporting families as they navigate the challenges ahead,” Babineaux-Fontenot said in a statement. “Thank you, Taylor, for standing with us in the movement to end hunger and for helping communities in need.”
Hurricane Helene decimated parts of North Carolina, Georgia, and East Tennessee, while Florida is set to receive the brunt of incoming Hurricane Milton. Swift is not the only artist stepping up to assist in recovery efforts: Dolly Parton also led a $5 million donation towards relief efforts in partnership with Walmart, while Metallica’s Foundation offered $100,000.

In the wake of the devastating Hurricane Helene, musicians are coming together to give back. Some artists, like Metallica and Dolly Parton, have made major donations to relief, while others are putting together benefit shows, like Ben Folds and Goose, who have both announced upcoming fundraising events.
Goose’s concert will occur first, starting with a performance at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on October 25th, followed by a show at Avondale Brewing Co. in Birmingham, Alabama on October 26th. The bookings technically arrive as “make-up” dates for a pair of shows in Asheville that were canceled on account of the hurricane, and will raise relief funds “in partnership with Conscious Alliance and local organizations working directly with impacted communities in Western North Carolina.”
Tickets for the Goose shows will first become available through an artist pre-sale opening on Thursday, October 10th at 10:00 a.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many musicians have used their platforms to try to deliver some much-needed relief. Some have donated money, others have announced benefit concerts — now, joining those efforts is a massive compilation album featuring 135 previously-unreleased tracks from artists like R.E.M., Jeff Tweedy & Karly Hartzman, Jason Isbell, Fleet Foxes, Waxahatchee, Sylvan Esso, and many more.
Titled Cardinals at the Window, the compilation was officially released today, and is now available to purchase on Bandcamp. Curated by three North Carolina natives — musician and community organizer Libby Rodenbough, New Commute founder David Walker, and music journalist Grayson Haver Currin — the album will raise funds for three organizations: Rural Organizing and Resilience, BeLoved Asheville, and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina.
Across its 135 tracks, Cardinals at the Window features a combination of new recordings and previously-unreleased live tracks. In addition to the aforementioned artists, the compilation’s stacked lineup includes Mj Lenderman,...
