John Mayer has legendary status among watch lovers. A major collector for years — renowned not only for his connoisseurship of luxury timepieces but also his knowledge of what makes some of the most complicated examples tick — he’s now joined the ranks of the few celebrities (LeBron James, Travis Scott) who have designed a watch in collaboration with Audemars Piguet.
Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak “John Mayer” Limited Edition
The new Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” Limited Edition is a grail-worthy watch specimen. In addition to its perpetual calendar complication — one of the most technically precise functions to pull off, in that it can accurately track and show the correct date of the month, no matter the length of the month or whether it’s a leap year — the new timepiece features a gorgeous deep-blue dial meant to evoke a starry, crystalline sky. The watch face also boasts a moon phase with glittery aventurine.

Mark Ruffalo tells me he has, until now, kinda shied away from playing the villain of the piece. He licks his lips as he declares that it’s “so much fun to finally get to play the bad guy.”
He refers, of course, to his Duncan Wedderburn, the calculating cad of the first water he plays with zest in Yorgos Lanthimos’ delicious movie Poor Things.
The schemer Wedderburn sets his sights on Emma Stone’s Bella Baxter, but it is she who outwits him.
“The bad ones are the best and I was scared of it,” he tells me at Saturday’s BAFTA Tea Party, set on a mammoth, chilly terrace at The Maybourne Beverly Hills.
As I toyed with Ruffalo’s thesis in my head, I was unable to conjure any roles he’s played that were, hitherto, downright dastardly. His Bruce Banner stroke the Hulk in the Marvel movies is essentially decent,...

"Is this the beginning of something crumbling, or is something that's gonna strengthen [the restaurant industry]." Gravitas Venture has already released this documentary film on VOD already - but we're just now catching up with it. Directed by Peter Ferriero, Sorry We're Closed takes a look into the personal trauma, mental health, and livelihood of some of the best chefs during the hardest time of their careers. In the summer of 2020, restaurants are hit doubly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. Chef Elizabeth Falkner checks in with her restaurateur colleagues across the country to see how they're coping, and whether or not they're able to keep on cooking. The film features appearances by Chef Elizabeth, Dominique Crenn, Nancy Silverton, Ann Kim, Gerald Sombright, Maneet Chauhan, and many more chefs from around the nation. This won the Best Feature Documentary award from the Pasadena Film Festival a few months ago.

Ever since Netflix announced it would be opening a Los Angeles pop-up restaurant, the jokes have been flying on social media. Would the servers use an algorithm to ask, “Since you liked grilled cheese, can we suggest broccoli?” Would you be allowed to share food with your friends or would it be forbidden, like Netflix password-sharing?
But at the preview night Tuesday for Netflix Bites at Short Stories Hotel on Fairfax, it was clear that the seriously delicious menu for the three-month pop-up, inspired by the streamer’s food programming, was no laughing matter. Imaginative cocktails from mixologists, like “Drink Masters” contestant Kate Gerwin, got guests in the mood with concoctions like the Oaxacan on Top of the World, while Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos mingled with the chefs. Netflix’s VP of Live Experiences Greg Lombardo welcomed guests, explaining, “We’re always focused on bringing our fans closer to the stories that they love.

San Francisco, June 22 (Ians) In a significant decision, the US Department of Agriculture (Usda) has approved the sale of cultivated or lab-grown chicken in the country.
Good Meat, the cultivated meat division of food technology company Eat Just, announced that it has received approval from the Usda for its first poultry product, cultivated chicken, to enter interstate commerce.
This landmark clearance means the firm’s chicken, which is made directly from animal cells, can now be sold to American consumers.
“This announcement that we’re now able to produce and sell cultivated meat in the US is a major moment for our company, the industry and the food system,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Good Meat and Eat Just.
“We have been the only company selling cultivated meat anywhere in the world since we launched in Singapore in 2020, and now it’s approved to sell to consumers in the world’s largest economy,...

Sharon Stone Says She Lost “Half My Money to This Banking Thing,” Breaks Down in Tears During Speech
Sharon Stone prepared some remarks to offer in return for receiving the Courage Award on Thursday night during the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s (Wcrf) An Unforgettable Evening fundraiser. But she didn’t seem to need any help in delivering a speech that, at times, had her in tears and ended with a standing ovation.
“I brought a couple of notes tonight,” said Stone from the podium inside the Four Seasons’ Beverly Wilshire ballroom. “I usually just speak off the cuff because, as you well know, I don’t give a shit.”
The line drew lots of laughter from a crowd that included Rebel Wilson, Nia Vardalos, Rachel Zoe, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin, Julianne Hough, Chord Overstreet, Maria Bello and Dominique Crenn, Kathy and Rick Hilton, Lori Loughlin, Olivia Jade Giannulli, Paul Wesley and NJ Falk. This post contains major spoilers for "The Menu."
Mark Mylod's "The Menu" is one dark, deeply twisted take on the fine dining experience, and an important part of bringing that world to life was creating the food within it. The film has several technically-detailed cooking sequences that show Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) and his team preparing meals for their exclusive guests -- but nothing is as mouth-wateringly perfect as his final preparation of a cheeseburger for unexpected diner Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy). The cheeseburger represents so much more than a pair of beef patties, some diced onions, and a couple of slices of American cheese, yet there's no denying it's a gorgeous piece of gastronomy.
The team behind "The Menu" really went out of their way to create the perfect burger and there are a few places where you can find instructions on how to replicate it, but now the...

Is it a spoiler to reveal that one of the crucial plot points from “The Menu” revolves around a juicy cheeseburger? Sure, the hit satire that recently landed on HBO Max is largely about a hugely pretentious tasting menu restaurant situated on a lonely island and overseen by a mercurial chef played by Ralph Fiennes.
But the character played by Anya Taylor-Joy, the odd-woman-out among the group of rich foodies and snooty critics, refuses to touch one morsel of the exquisitely plated oysters or the handmade tortillas inscribed with shocking messages. After quite a few shocking things happen over the course of the dinner, she finally gets her wish of being served “just a well-made cheeseburger.”

Searchlight Pictures gave their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu a theatrical release last month (you can read our review Here and watch our interview with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult Here), and it has been more successful than I would have expected it to be. It has earned more than 59 million at the worldwide box office. And next month, it’s heading into viewers’ homes. The Menu will be receiving a digital release on January 3rd, with a Blu-ray release to follow on January 17th.

There's nothing more annoying than going on a first date and having your dining partner for the night continually mock and belittle the things you are personally passionate about. It's almost as if they flat-out refuse to try and connect with you from across the table, which is the very thing they supposedly agreed to attempt when they decided to go out with you in the first place. In "The Menu," that situation is completely reversed. Anya Taylor-Joy plays the joyfully disenfranchised Margot (probably not her real name) whose disinterest in the finer things in life -- and, by association, her insufferable food-obsessed dinner date Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) -- makes her undeniably cool.
Tyler's efforts to impress Margot by taking her to a remote fine dining experience catered by the legendary Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) are completely ignored, as is the delectable amuse-bouche they receive on the boat ride over to the exclusive Hawthorne restaurant.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for "The Menu."
Following in the class-conscious footsteps of horror comedy films like "Ready or Not" and "The Hunt," "The Menu" serves its viewers a deliciously deranged takedown of society's elite members. Centered around an exclusive dining experience on a private island, Chef Julian (Ralph Fiennes) has decided his craft (and life) will no longer be ruled by the demanding whims of wealthy people. With each course, Julian's remaining grip on reality and sanity loosens. By the film's end, he and his burnt-out crew literally go up in flames, damning his impossible-to-please clientele along the way. Director Mark Mylod crafts an impeccably paced film — something the fictional Julian would appreciate — that dials up its tension through each foreboding frame.
Pairing "The Menu" with other horror films about food is an unenviable task. No horror comedy movie balances its thrills, dark humor, and food design as well as Mylod's work.

For Mark Mylod, the director of Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu, the biggest challenge was setting the tone for the darkly comic thriller, in which a group of diners travel to a remote island to eat at Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant run by Ralph Fiennes’ celebrity chef Julian Slowik — a dining experience that comes with some unexpected surprises (not of the gastronomical variety).
“Trying to get the tone right … was really about me and the cast just talking a lot, and then the massive benefit of being able to shoot the film almost chronologically,” says Mylod of the movie, a class satire set primarily in the single setting of the Hawthorn dining room. “Everybody’s on set all the time, and you never know quite when the camera’s on you … That was a way of working that the cast really responded to, and...

The renowned chef behind San Francisco’s Atelier Crenn was sent the screenplay for Mark Mylod’s film when the production was looking for a consultant who could help them nail the creation of Hawthorn, the film’s remote fine-dining restaurant where guests pay 1,250 a head.
Crenn, the only female chef in the United States with three Michelin stars, helped the filmmakers bring to life the dishes as described in the script as authentically as possible, while also making tweaks that would be accurate to the story’s setting of an island in the Pacific Northwest. “The Menu” is one of the rare movies, along with classics like “Big Night” and “Babette’s Feast,” that revolves almost completely around a singular meal. But unlike those odes to pleasure, “The Menu” starts out as a deluxe culinary experience for the 1, but then devolves into something much darker — and far less appetizing. During filming of “The Menu,” food stylist Kendall Gensler occasionally found herself on foam duty. “The foams were, of course, very difficult, because they just die so quickly,” she told IndieWire. “We would foam, they would shoot, die, and then we’d re-foam again.” Gensler would be stage left with a huge bin of sauce and an immersion blender to create new foam for the next take. Thus is the peril of recreating a fine dining experience for the camera.
“The Menu,” directed by Mark Mylod, takes place entirely over a multicourse meal at an exclusive fine dining establishment called Hawthorne, located on a sequestered island that’s ruled over by the exacting and, it turns out, unraveling Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). The dishes are exquisite. There’s “The Island,” which evokes the setting with raw diver scallop, pickled local seaweeds, and algae. “Memory” features marinated grilled chicken thigh (speared...

The act of eating has always been rich with metaphor and meaning, from the offering of bread and wine at a certain supper 2,000 years ago to the rending of human flesh by reanimated corpses in more recent cinematic outings. In the movies alone, the taking of a meal is often loaded with political, social, family, or sexual undercurrents. Which brings us to The Menu, a scathing and occasionally uproarious black comedy that manages to be a mostly entertaining repast, even if the feast gets a little heavy by the end.
As the film opens, a couple named Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) and Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) are headed to a secluded island in the Pacific Northwest for an exclusive dinner at the ultra-chic restaurant Hawthorn. Margot is not Tyler’s original guest, a minor inconvenience that’s frowned upon for a moment by the maitre’d, Elsa (Hong Chau), before the pair...

Mark Mylod has a unique gift: telling stories that show empathy for the ultra-wealthy as they treat the world as their playground.
“We, of course, realize that we ourselves are flawed and we can’t help but see, if not the same bank balance, some level of ourselves in those characters in our own follies,” says the Emmy-winning executive producer of “Succession” and director of “The Menu,” a Nov. 18 Searchlight release.
In the pitch-black comedy, Anya Taylor-Joy plays a woman joining her boyfriend (Nicholas Hoult) on an exclusive foodie trip to a remote island, where an obsessive chef (Ralph Fiennes) is cooking a meal that the visitors won’t forget. While there are jabs at the film’s more clueless characters, Mylod says it was critical to understand the diners, played by a sharp group of character actors including Judith Light, John Leguizamo and Rob Yang.

Nicholas Hoult (The Great) did a deep dive into the world of foodies to prepare for Searchlight Pictures’ twisted horror comedy The Menu. Hoult plays one of the guests at an exclusive – and isolated – restaurant who discovers his delicious meal comes at a higher price than anticipated.
“It was very difficult because I had to eat at nice restaurants and watch lots of food shows,” said Hoult, laughing. “It was one of those amazing things that the more of Chef’s Table I watched, the more that I was in awe and amazed by these singular-minded, dedicated chefs who committed their whole lives to their craft. And then I was starstruck because Dominique Crenn, who was the food advisor on the movie and designed the menu, she was on set one day and I’d seen her episode and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s her!’

‘The Menu’ Cast on Being ‘Teased’ by Prop Food and Why Audiences Love Watching the Ultra-Rich Suffer
“The Menu” brings a troupe of wealthy diners to one of the finest fictional restaurants in America. There are rare oysters, elevated tacos and a bread plate sans bread — or, unaccompanied accompaniments. The comedic thriller recruited award-winning chef Dominique Crenn as its chief technical consultant, but according to the cast, they didn’t get to enjoy much of the world-class food seen on screen.
“It was kind of a tease because we didn’t get to eat very much of it, at the end of the day,” Reed Birney told Variety on the red carpet at the New York premiere of “The Menu.” “As soon as we started eating the thing, Chef would do something and cut it off. And they would take the plate away and bring a new one for the next tape.”

At first glance, "The Menu" appears to be about a group of rich folk digesting a series of delectable dishes that you'll never be able to afford. But once they're gathered at the secluded Hawthorne establishment, they're at the mercy of Chef Slowik and his army of cooks, who have an eventful evening planned for them. Everything I've seen so far regarding Mark Mylod's dark comedy has only intrigued me further as to what the mystery behind the delicious madness could be.
One of the film's main selling points is its stellar ensemble, with names like Hong Chau ("The Whale"), Ralph Fiennes ("The King's Man"), Nicholas Hoult ('Warm Bodies"), John Leguizamo ("Violent Night"), Judith Light ("Julia"), Janet McTeer ("Ozark") and Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Northman"). Plus, our own Chris Evangelista calls a delightfully wicked treat in his review.

In his Toronto International Film Festival premiere “The Menu,” Ralph Fiennes plays Slowik, a celebrity chef who runs an exclusive restaurant that caters to the ultra-rich. And while the darkly comic horror film eventually reveals some macabre twists regarding what’s on Slowik’s menu, Fiennes says he got into the character via more mundane inspirations.

Ever since she was 27 and a castmember on E.R., Maria Bello has spent a portion of each year in her “happy place”: Nairobi, Kenya. Bello — who is producing and has a story-by credit on Sony’s historical epic The Woman King, set in the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) and out Sept. 16 — spoke with THR about her love of the continent.
You’ve been journeying through Africa for half your life. What keeps drawing you back?
The continent offers itself up to your imagination. I’m so excited about what’s going on there. It’s quite the stereotype that all of Africa is one big safari, but it’s not. There are thriving, beautiful cities and people lump them all into one, “Oh, it’s Africa.” But it’s not, it’s so diverse, with so many distinct cultures and food and music.

Just like “Iron Chef,” Alton Brown is synonymous with Food Network. But now, both the beloved show and the celebrity chef have moved to Netflix for a new version of the competition series that will be co-hosted by Brown.
With Netflix’s “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend,” which premiered this week, Brown has officially departed from his long tenure at Food Network, where he was a staple for 21 years.
Brown first joined Food Network in the late ’90s, and was the host and creator of “Good Eats,” as well as the host of “Iron Chef America,” “Cutthroat Kitchen” and a slew of other series at Food Network and the Cooking Channel.
Though his exit was never formally announced, Brown’s last deal with Food Network took him through 2020, and since, he has quietly left their airwaves. In 2021, new episodes of his shows have aired — “Good Eats: The Return,...
