The two stars will fill out Hoover’s twisted thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, alongside the previously announced Anne Hathaway. Michael Showalter is attached to direct the project, following his most recent page-to-screen adaption “The Idea of You” with Hathaway. Nick Antosca will write the script, based on Hoover’s novel.

The gothic, psychological thriller started as a self-published project from Hoover in 2018, a departure from her typical romance novels. Following Hoover’s viral successes, “Verity” was acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021. It has since spent months on the New York Times Best Sellers list, selling more than one million copies in 2023 alone.

The film is about a convicted rapist who uses his knowledge of the law and its loopholes to seek revenge on a former public defender. He blames the lawyer for his 14-year prison sentence, claiming the lawyer purposely sabotaged his defense during the trial.

The series is being developed by UCP and Amblin. It will be the first TV project that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg worked on together. They are executive producers along with showrunner Nick Antosca, who has worked on shows like ‘Channel Zero’ and ‘The Act.’ Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin, and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.

At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now, Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner – and Deadline reports that Javier Bardem has signed on to play the villainous Max Cady in this new take on the story!

The 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald was adapted twice for the big screen with both 1962’s Cape Fear and 1991’s Cape Fear, and the tale is next headed to the small screen for a television series from writer/showrunner Nick Antosca (“Channel Zero”).

THR reports today that Javier Bardem (“Monsters”) will star in the brand new Cape Fear television series, which hails from exec producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are set to executive produce a new Javier Bardem-led thriller series for Apple TV+ based on “Cape Fear,” a film with ties to both Scorsese and Spielberg.

Apple TV+ has granted a series order for “Cape Fear,” which will be written and showrun by Nick Antosca. Antosca will executive produce alongside Scorsese, Spielberg and Bardem.

The series is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which inspired Gregory Peck’s 1962 film adaptation, “Cape Fear.” In the late 1980s, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct a new adaptation, but he passed the film over to friend Scorsese so he could make “Schindler’s List” instead. Scorsese cast Robert De Niro in the role that will be filled by Bardem, and the resulting 1991 film “Cape Fear” was a commercial success and scored Oscar nods for De Niro and Juliette Lewis.

The actor has come aboard to star in a drama series re-imagining of Cape Fear, based on the film thrillers made by Universal Pictures. The project is set up at Apple TV+, which has greenlit it with a series order.

Nick Antosca, who created the true crime dramas A Friend of the Family and The Act, is writing and will showrun the series that will be executive produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Rebecca Franko has been promoted to EVP and Head of Current Series at the NBCUniversal-owned studio. Franko was previously SVP, Current Programming, having joined in 2022.

She will oversee day-to-day operations for the studio’s slate of programming and will also start supporting select projects from Universal International Studios and series streaming on Peacock.

She reports to Beatrice Springborn, President of UCP and Uis. Kenny Tsai, who joined UCP at the same time as Franko as SVP, Current Programming continues in that role.

Franko will work with UCP’s roster including Patrick Macmanus, Nick Antosca and Sue Naegle, and serving as a liaison between production and other departments.

UCP’s slate includes horror series Teacup, from exec producer James Wan and starring Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer, which launches on Peacock on October 10, as well as Suits L.A.

Chucky’s murderous days are over — at least for now. The series, based on the classic horror movie franchise, will not return for a fourth season on Syfy and USA Network. The news comes four months after Part 2 of Chucky‘s third season aired its finale on both NBCUniversal cable networks.

Series creator/executive producer Don Mancini had been looking to carry on. He revealed in April that he had pitched a fourth season, saying at the time that “it’s something I really like to do.” His enthusiasm helped spring the #RenewChucky fan campaign, which has been rallying support for Season 4.

Needless to say, today’s outcome is not what he had hoped for, but Mancini, who also created and wrote movie franchise, remained graceful in his reaction, vowing that this is not Chucky’s last spree.
