Back in 2008, it was announced that Gore Verbinski would be directing a film adaptation of the video game BioShock, with John Logan writing the screenplay. Later, Verbinski decided to hand the helm over to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but stayed involved as a producer. The movie never made it into production. After years in development hell, BioShock was scrapped by Universal. Now Netflix is working with Vertigo Entertainment and 2K on their own BioShock adaptation, which is set to be directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Michael Green. Lawrence has been developing the project with Green and producer Roy Lee for a couple of years now… and Deadline reports that it’s now moving ahead with a lower budget than previously expected.

After years of development, “BioShock”, the 2007 first-person shooter video game is being developed as a new live-action movie, to be directed by Francis Lawrence, for streaming on Netflix:
“…incorporating ideas by 20th century dystopian and utopian thinkers Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley, as well as historical figures John D. Rockefeller and Walt Disney, the game sees the player guide ‘Jack’, after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the ‘bathysphere terminus’ that leads to the underwater city of ‘Rapture’.
“Built by the business magnate ‘Andrew Ryan’, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ‘Adam’, a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline.
“Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of Adam-obsessed enemies, and the iconic, deadly ‘Big Daddies’, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past.

Director Francis Lawrence is very busy right now. His fantasy adventure film Slumberland is set to be released through the Netflix streaming service this Friday, November 18th. He’s currently in post-production on the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. He’s working with Keanu Reeves and Akiva Goldsman to develop a Constantine sequel. He’s also working with screenwriter Michael Green to develop a film adaptation of the video game BioShock – and speaking with Collider, he said thinks BioShock will be his next project to go into production. He also said he believes this film will stand out among video game adaptations because the game has such weight and gravitas that it should make for a movie that’s unique, beautiful, and entertaining.
Lawrence said, “I think it’s one of the best games ever created. It’s also, I think, one of the most visually unique games ever created.

Rebecca Murphy has added feature film producer to her list of credits with a deadpan comedy set to debut this Thursday at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival.
Based on the 2014 short of the same name, The Florist follows millennial Annika, played by Murphy, who earns her living selling edible hypnotic flowers to fashionable eateries across Los Angeles.
Following her instincts, and driven by blind ambition, her business appears to be going well until the onset of competitors prompt her to take action and announce she has found the elusive Comet Flower, a legendary plant that may have unique qualities.
The film was written and directed by fellow Australian Andrew Ryan (writer and creator of MTV’s The Sellers) and was shot in California.
The short, also written and directed by Ryan and produced by Murphy, screened at Tribeca Film Festival, with the script named as a finalist for the 2016 Sundance Alfred P Sloan Prize.
