Reboots, as the past few years have shown, are beloved by the TV business. This week’s makeover centers on the upfronts, a decades-old industry ritual revitalized by a new push into streaming ads.
Fabled New York venues like Radio City Musical Hall and Lincoln Center will once again play host, and a conga line of talent will take the stages, in stark contrast with the strike-afflicted 2023 edition. As the ad business crawls toward a recovery, there are more in-person presentations – eight, up from six a year ago, filling the Monday-to-Wednesday schedule – including the debuts of Netflix and Amazon. (See full schedule below.)
After the Zoom doom loop of Covid, this year’s extravaganzas are sure to feel particularly festive. And the entry of major tech companies, including YouTube, whose Brandcast will cap off the week, will add considerable buzz. But is all of the exuberance a little irrational given...

When NBCUniversal kicks off TV’s traditional week of upfront presentations on Monday, picket-free sidewalks outside Radio City Music Hall will be a sight for sore eyes following last year’s noisy protests in the first weeks of what proved to be the nation’s “hot labor summer.”
Hosting a programming presentation at a megawatt New York City venue like Radio City or Javits Center is stressful enough. Executives are eager to return to business as usual in wooing Madison Avenue. Last year, the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2, barely two weeks before the curtain went up on NBCU’s tip-off event.
“As much as the upfront is a business presentation, it’s also a celebration of everything that NBCUniversal has to offer,” Josh Feldman, chief marketing officer of NBCUniversal advertising and partnerships tells Variety. “And our number one goal is for our audience to walk out...

NBCUniversal hopes to create a new type of event when its coverage of the Paris Olympics kicks off in late July. You don’t have to be an athlete to participate.
When viewers of the company’s Peacock streaming hub open Olympics coverage, NBC is likely to ask some of them if they’d like to order food or beverages. Maybe someone wants to enjoy a pizza while watching soccer. Depending on which advertisers express interest in the technology, says Josh Feldman global chief marketing officer for NBCUniversal’s advertising and partnerships division, NBC hopes to team up with a national restaurant chain that delivers or with various delivery services that can bring drinks and snacks to homes.
Viewers may see custom segments making the offer during soccer games and ahead of certain movies, says Feldman, or even hear announcer’s prompting them to click to find ways to order.

Marvel’s Echo series marks the launch of the company’s Marvel Spotlight banner, which will be their platform for “more grounded, character-driven stories” that don’t require a knowledge of “larger MCU continuity” – although the show does serve as a follow-up to the Hawkeye series and has ties to the Netflix Daredevil show and the upcoming Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again. All of these connections are made clear in the most recent trailer for Echo, which uses stock footage from Hawkeye and Daredevil up front. You can watch it in the embed above.
The Echo character was introduced in the pages of the Daredevil comic book back in 1999, so it’s fitting that her show will have firm ties to Daredevil.

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

When Shoshannah Stern was six years old, she asked her mother for an agent. The actress and creator of “This Close’ on Sundance Now doesn’t know how she knew what an agent was at that age, but once she got it in her head that acting was what she wanted to do, she never let it out of her sights. Stern booked her first professional gig on “Off Centre” after attending Gallaudet University and then went onto series such as “Threat Matrix,” “Jericho,” “Weeds” and “Supernatural” before launching “This Close” with Josh Feldman.
Do you consider “Off Centre,” your first TV show, your big break?
They were looking for a deaf actor in their 20s and they were looking outside of Los Angeles so they called Gallaudet University … and the secretary, who was almost like my mom, always very supportive, said “I know the perfect person for you.” So...

Jimmy Fallon has taken his “Tonight Show” to Los Angeles, Orlando and Minneapolis. Now he’s going to bring it to New York’s backyard.
As part of an advertising pact with T-Mobile, NBC’s “Tonight” will hold forth from Central Park in Manhattan on Thursday, September 13. Under the terms of the deal, T-Mobile will hold a nationwide sweepstakes to send fans to New York for the special event, and the broadcast will contain some content tailored for the advertiser along with surprise celebrity guests. Fallon was expected to announce the details of the agreement and the special broadcast on Thursday’s “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
“The ‘Tonight Show’ has traditionally done just one-offs for advertisers,” says Josh Feldman, executive vice president of integrated marketing and network partnerships at NBCUniversal, in an interview.” This really breaks ground.”

“Beauty and The Beast” screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos has been tapped to write the third “GI Joe” film for Paramount and Allspark Pictures.
The third “GI Joe’ film in the franchise, based on the world’s most-famous toy, will be a spinoff film based upon fan favorite character Snake Eyes.
In the spring of 2016, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro set up a writers room for developing its cinematic universe for Hasbro properties, with Akiva Goldsman overseeing the screenwriters. Along with “GI Joe” other featured brands include “Micronauts,” “Visionaries,” “M.A.S.K.” (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and “Rom.”
“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” grossed more than $300 million worldwide back in 2009 on a reported production budget of $175 million, not including prints and advertising. The 2013 sequel “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” starring The Rock as Road Block grossed $375.7 million on a budget of $155 million. Channing Tatum who played Duke in the first two films was killed off early in “Retaliation” after complaining to Howard Stern how much he hated the role.

At the first-ever Creators Summit presented by GLAAD and the Creative Artists Agency, producers, writers, content creators and industry execs gathered to discuss the future of diversity, inclusivity and intersectionality in entertainment at the agency’s headquarters in Los Angeles. (The daylong event kicked off the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which will be held in La on Thursday.) Panelists spoke about ways to increase authentic representations of the Lgbtq community in the media while flipping the script on stereotypical portrayals.
“GLAAD has been at the forefront of equality and equity for quite some time,” said Steven Canals, who along with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk is one of the creators and executive producers of FX’s upcoming drama series “Pose,” which includes a groundbreaking number of transgender people both in front of and behind the camera. “I think that partnering with CAA is important because it shows that there...

“This Close” is groundbreaking in many way and not just because it was the first dramedy to go straight-to-series from Sundance Now, but also because it was created, written and stars Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman — who are both deaf. I think this was a subconscious attempt to match how Stern and Feldman were speaking to me — which was through an interpreter who was relaying everything the deaf showrunners were saying using...
