Surviving Jack revolves around Dunlevy family. A no-nonsense father (Christopher Meloni) starts tough-love parenting his teenage kids (Connor Buckley and Claudia Lee) while his wife returns to college (Rachael Harris). Others in the cast include Kevin Hernandez and Tyler Foden.

Christopher Meloni had a long run on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit but his Fox sitcom didn't last. Surviving Jack has been cancelled after one season.

The series was originally supposed to have 13 episodes this season but the network cut the order down to eight installments. That's never a good sign.
Surviving Jack has been drawing poor ratings on Thursday nights, following American Idol. The six episodes that have aired so far have averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.35 million total viewers.
The series finale is scheduled for next Thursday, May 15th.

Destin Cretton (I Am Not A Hipster), who as well as this version also wrote and directed the short film on which Short Term 12 is based, is certainly a director to watch after his work on this movie, released in November of 2013 in cinemas and on Blu-ray and DVD just a week or so ago.
Set in a facility that cares for and houses foster kids that are in-between homes and for whatever reason are no longer with their birth families, the story of Short Term 12 follows a twenty-something manager of the facility named Grace, played with subtlety, heart and a wonderful sense of realism by Brie Larson (The Spectacular Now). Chicago – There are certain jobs that I know that I could not do not because of the physical requirements but the emotional baggage I would take home with me at the end of the day. The brilliant, moving “Short Term 12” captures one of these jobs – people who look out for abandoned kids, many of them abused, addicted, and troubled the point of pure heartbreak.
Especially now that I’m a father, seeing kids abused shatters me to the point where I can’t even watch a movie about it without getting emotional. I’d be a wreck on the job every day.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
And yet some people take on this challenge and Destin Cretton has used his experience doing so to craft his debut film. “Short Term 12” is difficult to describe without it sounding manipulative or melodramatic but I’ll do my best. Trust me when I tell...

Coming away with both the Grand Jury and the Audience Awards at SXSW, Short Term 12 premiered to very promising early reviews back in March, and is definitely set to be a must-see movie this year.

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Fox has officially picked up five new comedies for its 2013-2014 season -- among them, an offering from "Family Guy" boss Seth MacFarlane and star vehicles for TV favorites Jason Ritter and Chris Meloni. The network only picked up three comedies last year.
First off, some sad news for "Parenthood" fans but great news for Jason Ritter -- he's finally found a strong pilot to lead in "Us and Them," previously known as "Friends and Family." Based on the British series "Gavin and Stacey," "Us and Them" pairs Ritter with Alexis Bledel in a long-distance rom-com.
"Law & Order: Svu" star Chris Meloni is taking a comedic turn with "Surviving Jack," based on Justin Halpern's book "I Suck at Girls." Set in the '90s, the series comes from the team behind "S#*! My Dad Says" and also stars Alex Kapp Horner, Connor Buckley, Claudia Lee, Kevin Hernandez, and Tyler Foden.

The distribution and reception to Mel Gibson’s latest starring role in How I Spent My Summer Vacation (aka Get the Gringo) is a real sign of just how far this former box office king has fallen.

Everybody’s favourite anti-Semite Mel Gibson returns to our screens in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, a back to basics action thriller set in a Mexican prison. The film was formerly known as Get the Gringo – is it too preposterous to presume that after the latest allegations involving Gibson’s intolerance ‘issues’, the film’s distributors decided to opt out of lumbering their film with a title that carries anything approaching baggage pertaining to race? Maybe. Whatever the reason, a pretty full-on actioner has been given the kind of title one would probably assume belongs to a weak Katherine Heigl rom com.

The films of cinematic multi-hyphenates like Vincent Gallo and Jerry Lewis are beloved for presenting their egotism and naked need for approval in odd, self-interrogating, strangely disarming form. In a much less sophisticated way, Get the Gringo offers a terrifying chance to romp through Mel Gibson's id. He's just one of three credited writers on this pulpy action-thriller and didn't direct, but at least a superficial grasp of the Gibson persona (including his well-documented personal problems) is essential to making sense of a movie that would otherwise be inexplicable.
Gibson's in a Mexican jail, apprehended by corrupt police who snatch his $5 million in cash before leaving him to rot. The prison is a sort of semi-free-enterprise experiment, based on the long-closed Baja penal colony El Pueblito, where prisoners governed themselves and free enterprise, especially in drug sales, was openly practiced. (Predictably, richer convicts took control and charged outrageous rates for shelter,...

Outburst after outburst, toil after toil, and Mel Gibson incredulously plods on, albeit in less familiar forms. His last film, the criminally underrated The Beaver, was a box office flop, likely not just for its peculiar premise, but due to Gibson’s much-publicised – and seemingly never-ending – array of personal demons. That his latest film, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, did not even secure American theatrical distribution – instead opting for the Video-on-Demand route earlier this month – is a worrying sign for the actor’s career, but controversy aside, pound-for-pound, he can still spit expletives and shoot guns with the best of his caste.
No matter the criticisms people will have of Gibson the man, Gibson the actor will never be criticised for half-assing his way through an assignment. That the first sight we see of the actor is him decked out in a clown outfit, fleeing...

Mel Gibson attempts to reboot his career with the crime caper, How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Here’s Michael’s review of a surprisingly good action film...
Let’s face it. If you were Mel Gibson, you would want a holiday. But he’s not jetting off into the sunset just yet. No, with his public reputation in tatters, and his movie career in freefall, the actor-filmmaker has drafted his own action-packed comeback, the sweat-soaked, bullet-ridden lark How I Spent My Summer Vacation.
Gibson stars as a grizzled career criminal - a Man-With-No-Name listed in the production notes as Driver - who within minutes literally jumps the USA-Mexico border with a car full of cash. Apprehended by the corrupt Mexican police force, the crook is banged up in an open-plan prison-cum-slum, while the coppers make off with the dough. Left to fend for himself in this minimum-security favela, Driver...

Apprehended by the corrupt Mexican police force, the crook is banged up in an open-plan prison-cum-slum, while the coppers make off with the dough. Left to fend for himself in this minimum-security favela, Driver...

“It’s Mel Gibson” is what I kept thinking for the first 10 minutes of “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” or “Get the Gringo” if you live in the States. Once one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors, Mel Gibson’s spectacular fall from grace means that when he is starring in a new film, it’s like spending time with an old friend that doesn’t come around too often.
In “How I Spent My Summer Vacation,” Mel Gibson plays a criminal (known only as Driver) in a getaway car being chased by police along the Mexican border. Desperate to escape, Driver steers his car over a mound of dirt and goes straight through the border wall and into Mexico. However, waiting for him on the other side are corrupt Mexican police officials who, after noticing the car is full of money, take Gibson into custody.

Chicago – Originally titled “How I Spent My Summer Vacation,” Mel Gibson’s latest star vehicle is taking an unusual road to your viewing pleasure, bypassing theatrical release and even skipping Blu-ray/DVD for a debut this week on DirecTV On Demand. Is this the new delivery system of the future? The new way to watch movies that, for whatever reason, couldn’t make it to the multiplex? It’s too soon to tell but a technology like this is going to need a surprisingly-good flick to draw viewers to it. “Get the Gringo” is not a surprising flick in any way, unless you find mediocrity surprising.

On the same day that Mel Gibson’s new movie, the enjoyably junky and excessively violent “Get the Gringo” (formerly “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”), was shown in an advance screening across the country via a bizarre satellite transmission (based out of Austin, Texas), another expletive-laced Gibson rant was unleashed on the internet (this time, instead of his estranged girlfriend, Gibson’s ire was directed at “Showgirls” screenwriter Joe Eszterhas). It was a perfectly timed example of the duality of Gibson the artist (he not only stars in ‘Gringo’ but also co-wrote and produced) and Gibson the unhinged fucking madman. It’s enough to make you wonder if maybe Gibson hasn’t succeeded despite his obvious insanity, but because of it, especially since “Get the Gringo” is so insanely entertaining.

The movie Get the Gringo premiered in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar last Wednesday night, followed by a special Q&A with producer and star Mel Gibson (seen above on the red carpet), young actor Kevin Hernandez, director Adrian Grunberg and producer Stacy Perskie. What made this Q&A moderated by Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News so special was that it was streamed live to audiences in nine other cities that viewed a simultaneous screening of the film along with Austin. Audience members were able to submit questions directly to Knowles via the internet.
In Get the Gringo, Gibson portrays Driver, a career criminal who is nabbed by corrupt Mexican police and then hidden away in a tough prison where he must learn to survive through his own street smarts along with the help of a 9-year-old boy and a not so reputable U.S. Consulate representative.

Plot: After a mad dash to the Mexican border, a criminal (Mel Gibson) is captured by federales, and sent to a Mexican prison- which is so crooked that the co-ed inmates not only have access to drugs, prostitutes, and all the other comforts of a sordid existence, but their families are even allowed to join them inside for the duration of their sentence. Inside, the out of place gringo is taught to survive by a young boy (Kevin Hernandez) whose mother is serving a sentence for drug smuggling,...

Chicago – Jonah Hill is Everywhere. He was just on the Oscars for his nominated work in “Moneyball,” his work in “21 Jump Street” still stands high on the box office chart, and previews for “Neighborhood Watch” with Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn have been lighting up theaters. And then there’s “The Sitter,” probably the least of these four films but a reasonable rental if you’re looking for a new comedy and a Blu-ray release that comes with some pretty funny deleted scenes and other bonus material.
While David Gordon Green’s “Your Highness” was a complete failure, his second 2011 comedy was more of a near-miss (and the 25 minutes of deleted footage on the Blu-ray reveal that it was even closer to working than I suspected after my theatrical screening). It’s more of a disappointment than pure torture. And Hill’s stellar comic timing is actually the best thing about it,...

Lionsgate have just sent over the first UK poster and trailer for their new movie starring Mel Gibson with the title ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation. he movie sees Mel Gibson in his first action movie for some years and I’m really hoping (like The Beaver) that he puts in an amazing performance. I’m starting to wonder, truly and sincerely, if David Gordon Green is suffering from one of those brain tumors that radically alters one’s personality. It’s the only explanation for how he could go from making sensitive indie dramas to a series of studio “comedies” in which he continually one-ups himself for awfulness. I didn’t think a flick could be worse than Green’s rapey medieval “romp” Your Highness, but The Sitter tries its damnedest, with its oversexualized grade-school diva who isn’t merely appalling within the context of the (flimsy) story but actually makes me wonder whether the things young actress Landry Bender had to do and say and sing on set didn’t constitute a sort of child abuse. (Surely this film would not have been possible prior to the rise of Toddlers and Tiaras and the willingness of stage parents to let their small...

Originally titled How I Spent My Summer Vacation, Get the Gringo stars Mel Gibson and was shot almost two years ago by director Adrian Grunberg, a long-time second unit director that worked on Gibson's Apocalyto as well as Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and Amores Perros for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to name a few. The film, however, isn't as dire as those three films as I'm sure you've already ascertained based on the title alone. The story centers on a career criminal by the name of Driver (Gibson), who, during a high-speed car chase with the U.S. Border Patrol and a bleeding body in his back seat, crashes into the border wall as he tries to escape. He survives, only to be placed inside a hard-core Mexican prison where he enters the strange and dangerous world of "El Pueblito." After sitting on the shelf and collecting dust for the past two years, the first trailer for Mel Gibson’s latest actioner ‘Get the Gringo’ has finally got its first trailer. The movie was originally called How I Spent My Summer, and with the way the trailer flowed it should have stuck with that title. But the movie is called Get the Gringo, and from the looks of things looks pretty decent. The film was written by Gibson, with cowriting and directing credits going to Adrian Grunberg. Stacy Perskie produced.
You can check out the first trailer to Get the Gringo below. Thanks to TheFilmStage for the embed.
Looking at the trailer, the movie looks like it can be a fun actioner filled with some comedic punches. But the latter seems to disappear into the wayside halfway through as the trailer gets more serious when we find out more about Gibson’s character.

Following his various personal scandals, former A-lister Mel Gibson struggled to find Hollywood players willing to bet on him or his work. It seemed his only friend was actress/director Jodie Foster, who stuck by him while promoting their collaboration The Beaver. The drama, which starred Gibson as a furious man who tries to channel his rage with the help of a furry hand puppet, drew mostly positive reviews from critics, but failed to win audiences over, pulling in less than $1 million domestically. Thus Gibson bankrolled his next feature Get the Gringo (formerly How I Spent My Summer Vacation) himself under the banner of his production company, Icon Productions. The action-drama throws Gibson back into the kind of roles he played in his heyday, meaning a smug but charismatic action-star. Here he plays a career criminal who unexpectedly bonds with a young boy (Kevin Hernandez) after being busted in Mexico.

David Gordon Green has certainly had one of the more peculiar career trajectories of any young director, starting out with grimly effective dramas like George Washington and Snow Angels, before unleashing his uniquely caustic brand of comedy with the uneven Pineapple Express, and finally opting for the more conventional – not to mention hugely disappointing – fantasy jaunt Your Highness. His latest, The Sitter, though passable enough and mercifully short, never seems sure quite what it wants to be, and the jarring tonal shifts ensure it fails to sufficiently satisfy as either a rambunctious comedy or a nuanced character study.
It does at least get to the point quickly; Noah (Jonah Hill) is a suspended college student who, to ensure his mother can go out on her first date in years, babysits the neighbours’ three kids. They are equivocally an odd bunch – there’s the self-indulgent, angsty teenage...

Jonah Hill may appear to have grown up in Moneyball, and got some intellectual credibility in an adult environment, but he reverts back to the same self-depreciating man-boy role we all know him for in David Gordon Green’s new mainstream comedy, The Sitter. It’s really a half-hearted, mischievous Noughties twist on zany 1980s comedy adventure, A Night on the Town – more commonly known as Adventures in Babysitting, starring Elizabeth Shue, but minus the hot babysitter and the child-friendly fun.
Hill is immature Noah Griffith, a suspended college student fixated on one sexy girl down the road, Marisa (Ari Graynor), who he gives ‘personal favours’ to. Planning to hook up again later that night, Noah begrudgingly agrees to stand in and baby-sit instead, so that his mother can go on a date. New 'The Sitter' Jonah Hill movie delivered outrageous comedy, drama & more. 20th Century Fox Recently released their new Jonah Hill, branded, comedy flick "The Sitter." I just checked it out today, and thought it was funny as hell. Jonah Hill always cracks me up. The movie served up a lot of laughs. There was one scene,I'll mention later, that was really very shocking. It stars: Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell, Max Records, Kevin Hernandez, Landry Bender, J.B. Smoove, and Method Man. In the flick, character Noah Griffith (Jonah Hill) hasn't really done much with his life, and is currently trying to date a girl who really isn't interested in him,but certainly doesn't mind stringing him along. He finally ends up doing something for someone else other than himself when his mother asks him to babysit one of her friend's kids so she can go out on a date,...

Jonah Hill headlines a movie for the first time. So then: is The Sitter a quality, R-rated comedy to round off the year? Er...
Noah (Jonah Hill) is a nice guy. We know this because, as his semi-girlfriend Marisa (Ari Graynor) says in the movie’s cold opening - after some moaning and writhing from the lady in question - nice guys give the best oral sex. Aside from that, Noah’s not got much on the ball. He’s got no job, he’s got no prospects, he’s a college drop-out, and he’s even kind of a jerk to his hapless mother.
Still, when he absolutely has to step up and do something nice for someone else, he eventually comes around. He always comes around in an attempt to please the people around him, starting with agreeing to babysit the children of his mother’s friends Dr and Mrs.
