Minx didn’t have much luck. After being canceled by HBO Max after one season, the erotic comedy was saved by Starz, but Minx has been canceled yet again following its second season.

The news isn’t all that surprising, but still a blow for fans of the series. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, Minx stars Ophelia Lovibond as Joyce, an “earnest young feminist who joins forces with low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women.” In addition to Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, Minx also stars Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya. The first season stands at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is much lower.

Starz will not be proceeding with a third season of 1970s-set series Minx.

The news is not surprising. Minx star Jake Johnson told Deadline last month that he did not expect a Season 3 renewal for the period erotic comedy, whose Season 2 finale aired Sept. 8.

Starz last January stepped in to rescue Minx, starring Ophelia Lovibond and Johnson, following the series’ cancellation by Max (then HBO Max) as part of cost-cutting tax write-offs while production was wrapping on Season 2. The premium network, which is in the process of cutting ties with owner Lionsgate, picked up both Season 1 and the unaired Season 2 of Minx, which is produced by Lionsgate Television. Both seasons will remain on the Starz app and all major platforms.

Starz has opted to cancel Minx, the comedy about the first porn magazine for women, after a two-season run. The news comes after the series from creator Ellen Rapoport was originally developed for Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max, which aired the first season and paid for a second before ultimately scrapping the show as a tax write-off with mere days remaining before production on the sophomore run was completed.

Minx was shopped by producers Lionsgate Television with the studio ultimately setting up the comedy starring Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond at Starz, which is currently controlled by its parent company, Lionsgate. Max effectively paid to produce season two, with Lionsgate footing the bill to complete production and market season two. The second season premiered in July, in the thick of the writers and performers’ strikes making it challenging for cast members and producers to promote the show’s return.

“Minx” has been canceled at Starz, Variety has learned.

This now marks the second time the series has been canceled. The first season of the comedy originally aired on Max, where it was renewed for a second season before it was canceled in a cost-cutting move.

Starz then announced that they had acquired the second season of the show and would air it along with the first. Season 2 debuted on Starz on July 21. Both seasons remain available to stream on the Starz app and platforms.

The show received positive reviews from critics, holding an average critical approval rating of 93% over both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. It failed to find a large audience, however, with the linear airings on Starz of Season 2 averaging less than 100,000 viewers per episode. There is no streaming viewership data publicly available for the series.

A third season of Starz’s period erotic comedy Minx isn’t likely in the cards, according to co-ep and star Jake Johnson.

In a recent Zoom chat with Deadline, the actor shared that he hasn’t heard anything about a final decision. “But by evidence of me cutting my hair short,” he said, “I don’t [expect a renewal].”

“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson reflected. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”

Johnson called the hampering of the show’s success, simply as a result of the turbulent Hollywood moment in which it debuted, “unfortunate,” given his feeling that “there was a lot to that show.

In Minx‘s season two finale, the Bottom Dollar gang reunites to hit back at Constance Papadopoulos’ takeover, which has not only reshaped the magazine (titled “Minx”) but slowly revealed itself as more hostile than (almost) anyone realized.

While much of the group catches on in the finale, Doug (Jake Johnson) was the first to see Constance’s (Elizabeth Perkins) moves for what they were, bringing the evidence to Tina (Idara Victor) in the season’s penultimate episode while she was on a cabin-in-the-woods retreat with Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) finding new women to join the Minx staff.

Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), Richie (Oscar Montoya), Tina (Idara Victor), and Bambi (Jessica Lowe) made their stand against Constance (Elizabeth Perkins), while Doug (Jake Johnson) finds himself in bed with her…literally. Meanwhile, Shelly (Lennon Parham) is embracing her newfound sexual awakening and its effect on her family, but Bambi may just be what her husband Lenny (Rich Sommer) is looking for and vice versa.

Jake Johnson is a TV guy. You probably know him best from his days starring as Nick Miller in seven seasons of "New Girl," but since 2022, he's also starred as Doug Renetti in "Minx." In the series, he clashes with Ophelia Lovibond's Joyce about the running of their joint magazine, Minx, which is half feminist essays and half pornography. And just Fyi: if you run into Johnson and call him one of his characters' names, he'll never get upset.

"I love TV more than movies," Johnson tells Popsugar. "A lot of my generation of actors, when we all came up, everybody was a real snob about TV, and everybody only wanted movies. So I pretended to be cool too and say, like, 'Dude, everything is film.'"

"But growing up, everything to me was TV," he adds. "It was 'Roseanne.

After first finding a spark with Bambi (Jessica Lowe) in Season 1, Shelly has come even further out of her shell, having explored swinging alongside her husband and most recently engaging in an affair with Joyce’s former professor on a visit to Vassar. As she struggled to find herself and come to terms with her identity, Shelly finally came to the realization in Episode 7, “God Closes a Door, Opens a Glory Hole,” that she is a lesbian. Starz “The process of coming out, I think, or discovering your sexual identity isn’t necessarily a straight line for most people,” series creator Ellen Rapoport told TV Insider.

Viewership for the back-to-back final episodes of “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 3 was up 9% from the two episodes dropped during its June premiere, TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

As the HBO comedy wrapped up its third installment Sunday evening, the final two episodes averaged 590,000 viewers across streaming platform Max and linear telecasts, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day viewership.

With the added boost from the finale episodes, “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 3 is on track to become the series’ most watched season yet. The first five episodes of the nine-episode season have averaged over 5 million viewers, currently outpacing the average viewership for Season 2 episodes after the same amount of time by over 10%. While Season 2 averaged 4.3 million viewers at this time, the second installment went on to average 5.1 million viewers across platforms.

HBO Max renewed and then cancelled Minx before its second season could be completed. Starz, which has cancelled plenty of its own series, picked up the completed episodes likely because they could be licensed at a relatively low cost.
