Detective Inspector Lou Slack (Leila Farzad) is a smart, hard-drinking, cigarette-smoking, highly effective police officer in the West Yorkshire force. She’s also a bent copper. But a bent copper who we desperately want to believe is also a “nice” bent copper. Redemption, after all, usually makes for great drama. And a dash of corruption in the lead character in a police show makes an intriguing change. Unlike in Line of Duty, here the high-ranking corrupt police officer is the investigator, not the investigated, the antihero who is also the hero. And unlike Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley – a hard act to follow – she’s wealthy and content with her life, complicated and compromised as it is. We want to know what Lou did that got her so entangled with the wrong side, and how she’s going to survive it as her web of deceit goes wrong. It’s...

BAFTA-nominated I Hate Suzie star Leila Farzad and Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan are to lead BBC One’s Better, the latest drama from prolific Chernobyl producer Sister.
Farzad, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role in Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble’s dramedy, will play Di Lou Slack, a quick-witted policewoman whose success lies on a foundation of deceit and corruption.
Buchan, who is also penning Sister drama Passenger for ITV, plays Col McHugh, a charming businessman and property developer who heads a citywide drug trafficking gang.
The show from Humans scribes Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent tells of the pair’s bond set in a world where they have created their own version of “right” and “wrong.”
Farzad called it a “a brilliant fresh take on the morality tale,” adding: “I am excited to have the opportunity to play Lou Slack, the vehicle through which we explore the multivalent layers of good and bad.

The BBC has unveiled a slate of eight drama series, including the latest projects from the writing teams behind The Salisbury Poisonings and Humans, and a Maxine Peake series about sexual politics in the modern workplace.
The projects were announced on Tuesday by BBC drama director Piers Wenger and are designed to mark his unit’s contribution to BBC plans to produce more in the UK’s nations and regions. Each series will be made outside of London and Wenger said they celebrate the “true range of authorship” from Britain’s creative communities.
Among the series is the six-part, Belfast-set rookie police officer drama Blue Lights, from Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn (see below for full details). It’s their first series since The Salisbury Poisonings last year, which was picked up by AMC after becoming the highest-rated new drama launch on British television since 2018. AMC and Channel 4’s sci-fi series “Humans” has been canceled after three seasons, an AMC spokesperson has confirmed to TheWrap.
Executive producers and writers Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent shared the news via Twitter on Monday.
“Sadly there won’t be a 4th season of ‘Humans.’ In this age of unprecedented choice and competition, we can have no complaints. Channel 4 & AMC were the perfect partners. They supported the show brilliantly and above all — let us make three seasons!” the pair wrote in a joint statement tweeted from Vincent’s account. “We know we left some threads hanging. That was the way we always wrote the show. Maybe one day we’ll get a chance to pick them back up. If there’s anyone out there with a few million quid and an interest in AI stories, we’re all ears.”

‘Humans’ is no more.
Writer and executive producer Sam Vincent announced the news on Twitter that the show, which aired on AMC and the U.K.’s Channel 4, would not be returning for a fourth season.
“In this age of unprecedented choice and competition, we can have no complaints,” he wrote, adding that he and fellow exec producer Jonathan Brackley felt “gutted of course, but we were so lucky.”
“We got to make the show we wanted to make, for 24 episodes. The Humans cast and crew were and are the best, and we wouldn’t have got a 2nd season without their talent and dedication, let alone a 3rd.”

AMC could be taking a trip to Christmasland in the future. Back in December of 2015, it was revealed that the network was considering developing a TV series based on Joe Hill's supernatural novel NOS4A2, and today AMC announced that it has opened a writers' room for NOS4A2 and two other projects.
Led by Jami O'Brien (Hell on Wheels), who, along with Joe Hill, will serve as an executive producer on the series should it move forward, NOS4A2 is now being developed in the aforementioned writers' room.
O'Brien and her team will work together to write scripts for multiple episodes and a framework for the first season, and if AMC likes the concept and story that O'Brien and company come up with, NOS4A2 could be ordered to series.

Synths and humans aren't all that different.
At least that's one of the things we learned by watching Humans Season 2, which ended last week after a shocking cliffhanger.
Good news, folks!! Humans Season 3 isn't all that far off.
The co-release between Channel 4 in the UK and AMC is written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and explores what happens when the line between humans and their synthetic counterparts are no longer well drawn.
The world isn't ours, but it could be.
And for those of us who grew up watching shows like The Jetsons and Lost In Space, we thought it would have been here by now.
Alas.
“We’re thrilled to be continuing this story! The Humans audience will know that the end of season 2 changed everything,” showrunners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley said.

AMC has signed an overall deal with Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, creators/executive producers of the network’s sci-fi drama Humans, a collaboration with Channel 4 in the UK. "Our intention is to show the world as realistically as possible," Humans writer Jonathan Brackley told TV critics at TCA, where he’d come to plug the second season of the AMC's sci-fi series, debuting Monday, February 13. "We did not want to show utopia or dystopia. We always wanted the audience to decide, and think about the issues. Our ideal situation would be a couple sitting around at home saying, ‘Should we get one of these things?’ Something that provok es…...

An eerie artificial intelligence awakening takes place in the official trailer for Humans Season 2, premiering in February on AMC.
"The next big leap is here. Get a look at what’s to come in the second season of AMC’s Humans, premiering February 2017."
From the Previous Press Release: "AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos today announced that the critically acclaimed drama series “Humans” has been renewed for a second season. The series will return for eight new episodes, with production starting next year.
Co-produced by AMC and Channel 4 with Kudos, the makers of “Utopia” and “Broadchurch,” the first season tapped into society’s preoccupation with and mistrust of advancing technology and artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human? Can the very traits through which we define humanity (love, trust, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice) be taught? What really is family? Exploring humans’ inherent fear of the unknown and the possible implications of granting machines consciousness,...

The writing duo behind Channel 4's mega-hit Humans have revealed they have long-term plans for the sci-fi series.
Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley told Digital Spy that they have a rough idea of what might happen beyond the upcoming second series.
"We think it could run longer than two series," Vincent said at this weekend's McM London Comic Con. "Definitely we have a very rough playful notion of what we'd do in series beyond two.
"We're still in the process of nailing down the stories for series two, of course, so that obviously has a knock-on effect. But we do think that far ahead."
Vincent added that Humans - which charts the rise of lifelike robots called Synths - has "got a few series in it".
"I think that's one of the advantages of doing a show that has a 360-degree look at the world," his co-writer Brackley said.

"Things are developing fast, as technology does in all areas. There's lots of new, society-wide effects which we're going to tell stories in."
Vincent and co-creator Jonathan Brackley confirmed that all of the major characters from the first series will return, including the Hawkins family.
"The big challenge for us is to create stories... that bring the Hawkins family back into it," Vincent explained. "We think we've cracked a couple of good ways to really tie them back into the big story."

Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
The awakening of Mia last week represented a major breakthrough for Leo and his group, especially coupled with Fred’s escape from Hobb’s home. While the desire for Leo and his group to determine the consciousness code and make it available for other synths hit a roadblock with Max’s sacrifice, the open willingness of Laura and Mattie to help proved that the group had allies they could trust. This week’s episode sees Leo’s group and the Hawkins family connect further as Karen’s history is revealed and a key character is lost in an entertaining episode that sets up an exciting first season finale.
It’s intriguing to note Karen’s anti-synth stance this week, especially when contrasted with Niska’s pro-synth stance.

Bringing to a close eight weeks of scintillating sci-fi goodness, Humans wrapped up a stellar first series on Channel 4 last night - but that finale left us with as many questions as answers.
If you're anything like us, here are a few questions you might still have - about the fictional world of Humans, and the show's origins and inspirations.
1. So wait... what happened at the end?
Confused by those final scenes? Here's a brief rundown of what went down in the Humans finale...
Elster's children - with the help of Karen (Ruth Bradley) - succeeded in unlocking the secret to Synth consciousness, but before they could decide what to do with it, Niska (Emily Berrington) deleted the code from Mattie's laptop - storing what appeared to be the only copy on a flash drive.
In what appeared to be a big move towards establishing peaceful human/Synth relations,...

Now that the series 1 finale has aired, what questions does Humans have left to answer in series 2?
Warning: contains spoilers for Humans series 1.
What is consciousness? What does it mean to be human? What defines the self? Time was, these kinds of questions would only find their way onto TV if they were the subject of debate by bearded Open University professors in the wee small hours of BBC Two. Humans folded them and more into a captivating primetime drama.
We’ll leave the philosophical posers above to finer brains than ours, and focus instead on some of the more earth-bound questions left behind by Humans series one. As the long wait for the second series begins, here’s what we’ll be pondering between now and next summer…
1. Why did David Elster commit suicide?

Humans, Season One, “Episode Six”
Written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley
Directed by Lewis Arnold
Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
After a lacklustre outing, last week’s episode of Humans bounced back by intersecting a number of character trajectories. This week’s episode continues the upturn in quality by delving into the history of a number of characters, shedding further light on their present-day actions and what drives them. The result is a solid episode that moves a number of storylines forward, setting up new character dynamics along the way before the departure of a notable character.
The look into the creation of Leo Elster and the synths that form his group go a long way towards explaining their story and adding a layer of empathy to their situation. Knowing not only that David gave consciousness to synths to provide a family for Leo,...

Was the Humans finale as thoughtful as the preceding episodes? Here's Michael's review...
This review contains spoilers
In Billion Year Spree, his survey of the history of science fiction, writer Brian Aldiss introduced the term ‘cosy catastrophe’ to describe the type of story in which, although a huge disaster befalls civilisation, a focus is maintained on a handful of people who manage to have a jolly old time of it, with ‘free suites at the Savoy, automobiles for the taking’ and so forth. I thought of Aldiss’ term several times during Humans and particularly so in this last episode. Of course, there were very few jolly old times to be had, but in the tight focus on the two families that we might call Hawkins and Elster, there was a sense that we were dealing with a narrow crisis while a larger one was about to unfold somewhere in the far surroundings.
