The Last Dragon screens this Thursday (May 26th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, Mo) with star Taimak in attendance! The event begins at 5:30pm and will be hosted by We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman
The Varsity theater on Delmar (which now houses Vintage Vinyl) is where I first saw the crazy cult classic The Last Dragon (aka Berry Gordy’S The Last Dragon) when it was new in 1985. It was a huge hit and played there for several weeks. If I could describe The Last Dragon to someone who has never seen it, I’d say that it’s the essence of the 80s – kind of a weird, trend-chasing mash-up of MTV videos, Kung-Fu flicks, overacting, and beautiful women. It was like a Cannon film made by a different studio (and a...

What do you say about Purple Rain that hasn't already been said? Not only is it one of the greatest music films of all time, but it's one of the defining films of the 1980s and earned Prince an Oscar. The soundtrack spent nearly a full half-year at Number One on the Billboard charts, sold 20 million copies worldwide and won two Grammys. But as with all things Prince, that's not the full story. A number of truly excellent books and articles have been written about the making of Purple Rain, and we're here to share some of the best bits of them with you.

Yesterday we learned that Vanity, the Prince protege who sang the unbelievably rad jam "Nasty Girl" with her band Vanity 6, passed away at the age of 57. At a Melbourne performance, Prince dedicated "Little Red Corvette" (and a few other choice moments) to his onetime girlfriend. Thanks to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, we also have a transcript of Prince telling an anecdote about his time with Vanity, a.k.a. Denise Matthews, in the early '80s. In a lighter moment in Monday's concert, Prince recounted a somewhat self-deprecating story about one of their heated arguments before they broke up in 1983, when he threatened to throw Vanity in the pool. “You can’t throw me in the pool, you’re too little,” she retorted. So Prince asked his 6-foot bodyguard Chick to toss her in for him. “I probably shouldn’t be telling this story, but she’d want us...

Thanks to a heartfelt post from legendary drummer and fellow Prince associate Sheila E., we learned that Vanity, a.k.a. Denise Matthews, died at age 57 on Monday after a battle with sclerosis encapsulating peritonitis, a complex form of a kidney disease. Matthews began her career as a model in her native Canada and met Prince, her musical mentor, at the 1980 American Music Awards. Prince gave her the name Vanity because he saw his "female reflection" in her, and he asked her to front his new girl group Vanity 6. That outfit, styled similarly to Prince's followup group Apollonia 6, would notch its biggest hit with the racy track "Nasty Girl," a twisted and explicit raunch-pop gem produced by Prince himself. Matthews would later go solo and record tracks like "Pretty Mess" and "Under the Influence," which actually became her highest-charting single. But everything you need to know about Vanity's wicked flair is in "Nasty Girl.
