Exclusive: The Black List has named the six projects and seven screenwriters invited to their 2023 Annual Lab. The program, now in its eleventh year, provides creative mentorship and career support to promising feature writers as they further develop their scripts during a weeklong workshop in Ojai, CA.

This year’s writers are Jake Burnstein and Brandon Verdi (Extra Pulp), Anne Hollister (The House Sitter), Chris Hwisu Kim (E.S.L.), Kathryn Prescott (Ema), Jainaba Seckan (But Some Of Use Are Brave), and Lisabelle Tay (Momo). The Black List selected these writers from over 1,300 feature script submissions on blcklst.com.

During the Lab, each writer workshops their screenplay through peer workshops and one-on-one sessions with working professional screenwriting mentors, including Andrew Ahn (Fire Island), Steve Desmond (Knock At The Cabin), Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4), Kiwi Smith (Legally Blonde) , Jonathan Stokes (El Gringo), and Scott Myers of Go Into The Story.

Exclusive: CBS is developing the drama series Manner of Death from writer and executive producer Emily Silver. The CBS Studios project will also be executive produced by Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore for Rideback.

Manner of Death tells the story of by-the-book Medical Examiner Amanda Bowman who, while fleeing her mysterious past, clashes with maverick Sheriff Luke Parker igniting a complex professional and personal relationship as they solve murders together. Amanda will also tackle how to do her job with the deck stacked against her.

Silver most recently served as executive producer and co-showrunner of the fourth and final season of TNT’s Claws. She held other roles in prior seasons on the show which starred Niecy Nash, Carrie Preston, Judy Reyes, Jennifer Lyon, and Karrueche Tran. Netflix has landed feature rights to Seesaw Monster — a 2019 book by Kotaro Isaka, whose novel Maria Beetle was recently adapted into the David Leitch actioner Bullet Train for Sony, starring Brad Pitt.

Olivia Milch (Ocean’s Eight) will adapt the screenplay, with Oscar winner Anna Hathaway (Armageddon Time) and Oscar nominee Salma Hayek Pinault (House of Gucci) attached to star. Who will direct is not yet clear.

While Netflix is keeping plot specific under wraps, it has described the film as an action-comedy two-hander that will have Hathaway and Pinault playing rivals forced together. The few descriptions of Seesaw Monster to be found online bill it as a story moving between the Japan of the Showa era and 2050, centered on the relationship between a wife and her mysterious mother-in-law.

Much like Dr. Sam Beckett (played in the original series by Scott Bakula), Ben is struggling to remember who he was, upon landing behind the steering wheel of a car in the year 1985. New Amsterdam is welcoming Kathryn Prescott (Finding Carter, the UK’s Skins) into one doc’s family: The actress will recur during the NBC drama’s fifth and final season as Dr. Lauren Bloom’s estranged sister, Vanessa, TVLine has learned exclusively.

As teased in the official synopsis for Season 5, Lauren will be navigating “a complicated relationship” with her sibling, who is described as “a wild child who refuses to grow up, get a job, stay sober and play by the rules.” Translation: She is “Bloom’s worst nightmare.”

Like “Sharpwin” fans, New Amsterdam star Ryan Eggold has a lot of feelings about the exit of his longtime costar and TV fiancée Freema Agyeman ahead of the NBC drama’s fifth and final season.

As TVLine exclusively reported in July, Agyeman, who has played Dr. Helen Sharpe since the series premiere, will not return for the show’s swan song. A source close to the series told us that it was Agyeman’s decision to leave.

The team found that everything was not what it seemed, from a call that went wrong to a hit and run turned into a kidnapping, which turned out to be connected to the suspect they've been hunting.

It was entertaining to see them finally progressing on some of the storylines brought in earlier in the season. Although there is still no mention of La Fiera, it's hard to believe she is actually dead.

Nolan and Bailey bickered for the opening scene, continuing their cop versus firefighter argument once again. But, luckily for us, this argument is over after this (or so we hope?).

“Skins” and “Finding Carter” star Kathryn Prescott was hit by a cement truck while crossing the street in New York and is suffering from life-threatening injuries, her twin sister Megan Prescott said on Instagram.

Kathryn Prescott, who rose to prominence alongside her sister as part of the so-called “second generation” of stars on the hit U.K. series “Skins,” was hit around 5:30 p.m. Et in the Prospect Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, according to the New York Post.

“After fighting through complex surgery some of Kathryn’s injuries include: broken pelvis in two places, both of her legs, her foot and her left hand,” her sister wrote. “She is incredibly lucky to be alive. She narrowly avoided paralysis. The doctors are hopeful that she will make a full recovery but this will only be possible with the correct care right now.”

After the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday night denied a request to issue emergency relief blocking Texas’ new law that bans abortion at six weeks and, say opponents, effectively eliminates access to abortions statewide, some big names in entertainment expressed their opinions about the legislation.

A group of prominent actors, musicians and other artists and companies swiftly responded to the news on social media. The slate for 2020 will include Polaroid, previously of Dimension Films; Ld Entertainment’s re-make Jacob’s Ladder; Xyz Films’ Code 8; Peter Facinelli-directed mystery thriller Hour Of Lead; Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr. sci-fi film Only; and Skylin3s, the third installment in the Skyline franchise.

Also among the slate will be genre fare including Rock Paper Dead, Dark Light, Inmate Zero, The Host, True Fiction, Bit, and crime thriller Blood On Her Name starring Will Patton (Armageddon).

This was originally set to open in August of 2017, but the film got caught up in all the Weinstein chaos, and never got a release. ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.’

Quentin Tarantino’s ninth movie Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood posted the biggest debut of his career in Australia last weekend, emulating its Us success.

The 1969-set drama/thriller starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Damon Herriman opened 68 per cent bigger than his previous best effort Django Unchained in 2012.

The downside: The Sony Pictures release sucked a lot of air from the second weekends of Universal’s Palm Beach and Transmission Films’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.

The top 20 titles raked in $14.4 million, 3 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero. Mind Blowing Films’ Bollywood film Mission Mangal and Magnum Films’ Hong Kong thriller Line Walker 2 had buoyant launches while Universal’s A Dog’s Journey opened with neither bark nor bite, mirroring its Us fate.

The Son Season 2 Episode 10

The Son, season 2, episode 10, "The Legend," concludes the series' run with the birth of a border town mythology and the lessons learned from the sins of a father. The great state, and former republic, of Texas is a land of tall tales. Last week's episode, "The Bear," included a version of the ultimate fate which befell Eli McCullough, leading the audience to a false conclusion. Oh, we doubted the accuracy, how could anyone know what was going through Eli's mind in his last hours facing off against the biggest bear in a state where bears are scarce. But we ultimately buy it. It's Texas, and it is a large enough story to give us a sense of comforting closure.

The Son Season 2 Episode 9

The penultimate installment of The Son, season 2, episode 9, "The Bear," readies the series for a somewhat forgone conclusion. But the closure is coming like a set of pincers squeezing several wounds at once, and not all of them healing. All three generations of McCullough are in danger of facing change and loss of fortune.  All three face choices which alter their comfort, even as they move out of their comfort zones.

The episode centers, emotionally, on Jeannie McCullough (Sydney Lucas). Last week, she witnessed her mother cheating on her father with their son's music teacher. The young McCullough ran away from home to escape a lying family only to barely escape a back road rape from a travelling salesman.

In The Son, season 2, episode 5, "Hot Oil," may be the best of the year. It is the most enjoyable so far. It is also the most suspenseful. We can tell we're on the verge of a catharsis we're relieved to sidestep. The episode opens in a dream sequence Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) is having where his young self (Jacob Lofland) is being successfully strangled by his current rival, María García (Paola Núñez). This is the first fantasia we've witnessed from Eli where imagines himself as the victim. Usually when the patriarch of the McCullough family is fantasizing, he is the victimizer. Gail Mancuso always thought her feature-film directorial debut would be a comedy, given her background of having directed some of the biggest sitcoms in the history of TV. Instead, she found herself drawn to “A Dog’s Journey” due to the emotional connection she has to animals as well as the messages the film sends to viewers.

The first A Dog’S Purpose was a gooey, family-friendly tear-jerker, but this 50-something dog-lover fell right into its heartfelt paws and it ended up on my top ten list of 2017’s best films. It told the story of one devoted dog who discovers the meaning of his own existence by dropping dead every half hour or so (after his life has run its course) and becoming reincarnated as a newborn pup with a diverse series of new owners. At the end of the day, it’s really about that thought that your animals are always with you and that some part of them is continuing on, and I think that’s a lovely thought for everyone,” producer Naia Cucukov told Variety at the movie’s premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood on Thursday night.

The film continues the story from 2017’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” in which Bailey, a golden retriever voiced by Josh Gad, becomes reincarnated into different dogs throughout time before finally reuniting with his owner Ethan (Dennis Quaid). “A Dog’s Journey” sees Bailey embody more dogs to help Ethan’s granddaughter Cj (Kathryn Prescott) with her own struggles as she grows up.

You know things are bad for women in Hollywood when there’s one female dog featured in canine cutefest “A Dog’s Journey,” and it still gets to be voiced by Josh Gad. That is, admittedly, an unavoidable consequence of this family franchise’s curious Buddhism-for-beginners premise: the idea that one mind and soul can be carried through the bodies of multiple mutts over the course of eternity, with Gad as our perky spiritual ferry through repeated rounds of Rover reincarnation. As if to compensate, Gail Mancuso’s blandly agreeable sequel to the boy-focused 2017 hit “A Dog’s Purpose” reorients its human narrative around a young woman’s troubled road to love and self-fulfilment — via the trusty companionship of various devoted pups.

That aside, fans of the first film will be delighted to find the formula pretty much untweaked, with a steady stream of corn-syrup sentiment binding what would otherwise...

There is apparently a sizable overlap between people who like films in which cute dogs scamper around happily, and people who like films in which cute dogs drop dead every half an hour. In 2017, “A Dog’s Purpose” catered to both groups by telling the tale of Bailey, whose soul transmigrates into the body of a newborn pup whenever he dies. He is granted a different name, breed, and (sometimes) gender with each metempsychosis, but his enthusiastic thoughts are always voiced by Josh Gad, and he retains his loyalty to his favorite master, Ethan, played in the film’s later scenes by Dennis Quaid.

Critics agreed that “A Dog’s Purpose” was, well, a dog, but Bailey, who can recall his past lives, is back in the sequel, “A Dog’s Journey”.

Again, it is a glossily nostalgic and moralistic Nicholas Sparks-style melodrama co-written by W. Bruce Cameron, and adapted from his novel.

AMC’s martial arts drama Into the Badlands will end after the upcoming final eight episodes of its third season, which will debut March 24. The network also has set an April 24 premiere date for Season 2 of drama The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, which will be its last.

Neither cancellation is particularly surprising. Both Into the Bandlands and The Son were renewed for Season 3 and Season 2, respectively, almost two years ago. Into the Badlands’ 16-episode third season was completed awhile ago, the cast was released, and a number of them have taken on new acting gigs. As for The Son, as a Western, it did draw respectable viewership though it was old-skewing. Additionally, I hear star Brosnon only had signed a short-term contract which is the case with many movie stars who do TV series these days.

The AMC dramas “Into the Badlands” and “The Son” are coming to an end on AMC, the cabler announced Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

“Into the Badlands” will end after the final eight episodes of Season 3. The martial arts drama returns on March 24 at 10 pm Et following a new episode of “The Walking Dead.” The series will then move to its regular timeslot with a new episode on March 25 at 10 pm Et.

In the final chapter of the series, an imprisoned Bajie warns Sunny that Pilgrim can’t be trusted. But with his son’s life on the line, Sunny struggles with his decision to help Pilgrim unlock the Meridian Chamber. The ensemble cast includes Daniel Wu, Nick Frost, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Orla Brady, Ally Ioannides, Lorraine Toussaint, Sherman Augustus, Babou Ceesay, Ella-Rae Smith, and Lewis Tan.

From AMC Studios, “Into the Badlands” was created by executive producers, showrunners, and writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

AMC has set the premiere dates for the second half of “Into the Badlands” Season 3 and the second season of “The Son,” which will mark the final set of episodes for both series.
