She grew up in Harlem, New York City, where she learned to dance, but moved to Canada when she was a teenager. She became well-known in the 1950s while performing in Montreal's clubs: Rockhead's Paradise, the Aldo, the Black Bottom, the Cavendish Club, the Maroon and others.
