Jeremy Saulnier's latest movie, "Rebel Ridge," just debuted on Netflix — and critics are loving the newest project from the director of "Green Room."
According to FlixPatrol, the movie — which Saulnier wrote and edited as well — has been the most-watched Netflix film in the U.S. since it hit the streamer on September 6, 2024. It also has a pretty astounding Rotten Tomatoes rating of 95% (as of this writing). With Aaron Pierre in the lead role of Marine veteran Terry Richmond — a role that was originally played by "Star Wars" veteran John Boyega until the actor departed due to family commitments — the movie has a pretty impressive cast, with James Cromwell, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, and Emory Cohen flanking Pierre.
So, what is "Rebel Ridge" about? As the movie begins, Pierre's Terry is heading to post bail for his cousin Mike (C.J. LeBlanc) and plans to buy a truck afterwards...

The sequel to Joker (2019), Joker: Folie à Deux, premiered at the Venice Film Festival on 4 September, and people have already had things to say about it. Joker 2 stars Joaquin Phoenix again as Arthur Fleck but also Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn.
Mixed Reactions From Publications and Critics
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian pointed to the spark between the two characters, saying, “There’s a real spark when Joker and Harley meet-uncute in the joint.”
But he also found the film ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitively becalmed.’ This is because of the long stretches where Phoenix and Gaga are kept apart, adding that Phoenix’s performance remains “forceful” yet “single-note.”
William Bibbiani, writing for The Wrap, praised Phoenix’s performance, saying he ‘brings new insights to Arthur Fleck that Arthur himself didn’t seem to understand until now.” He also praised how Gaga plays her version of Harley Quinn as her own kind of Harley Quinn,...

Joaquin Phoenix had one note for Lady Gaga while shooting “Joker: Folie à Deux”: sing worse.
While talking with Vogue, Gaga spoke about learning to sing like she didn’t have a voice like hers while playing the film’s take on Harley Quinn. Phoenix agreed.
“I encouraged her to sing poorly,” he said. “I remember asking her to sing without her vibrato. She has a beautiful vibrato — too beautiful. I think she felt naked without it. But as soon as she moved away from technique she unlocked her character’s voice.”
Lady Gaga agreed that she had to flip a switch to not put on a performance like she was playing someone who makes music for a living.
“I worked really hard on that, kind of trying to undo all my technique. I mean, Ally Maine in “A Star Is Born” is a singer and it’s a...

Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his perplexing yet brilliant portrayal in Todd Phillips’ Joker in 2020. So when a sequel to the film was announced, fans and critics alike had their expectations already sky-high. But many doubted whether the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be able to able to live up to its predecessor’s glory.

Releasing next year, the film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4. And as far as whether the film meets the expectations it has been subjected to or not, no one can really answer seeing the widely contrasting reactions critics have had.

When Todd Phillips — previously best known for the "Hangover" trilogy — helmed the first "Joker" movie in 2019, the comic book-adjacent film became one of the year's biggest critical darlings against plenty of odds. Phillips picked up an Academy Award nomination for his directing and the movie ended up in the race for Best Picture; though it lost to "Parasite," star Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar for playing everyman turned supervillain Arthur Fleck, and Hildur Guðnadóttir became the third woman in cinematic history to win for her astounding score. Still, at the time, a sequel seemed unlikely, thanks in part to the pandemic that shut down the world and in larger part to the fact that everyone largely assumed Arthur's story was finished.

First reactions to Rupert Sanders' bloody new adaptation of "The Crow" are rolling in, and it doesn't seem like the remake is going to take flight. At the time of this article's submission, it has an abysmal 22% Rotten Tomatoes critical score, meaning that just over 1 in 5 industry professionals gave the movie a negative review. It's a low grade, but it's not entirely unexpected for a movie that was controversial before it was ever even made.
The root of "The Crow" remake skepticism harkens back to the original film's tragic production, during which rising star Brandon Lee was killed in a gun-related accident that fueled speculation of a curse on the film. Superstition aside, fans of Lee — and of the original film — have been vocal for years about their disinterest in another "The Crow" adaptation, even as multiple sequels to the original have been released to little fanfare. Michael Keaton doesn’t really care either way about Warner Bros. shelving “Batgirl.” The actor told GQ that the decision to put the completed “Batgirl” film – where he reprised his role as Bruce Wayne – on a shelf, never to see the light of day, didn’t keep him up at night. The film was scrapped as one of many cost-cutting measures implemented by Warner Bros. of late.
“No, I didn’t care one way or another,” Keaton said. “Big, fun, nice check.”
However, he added that he felt bad for Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film’s directors. “I like those boys. They’re nice guys. I pull for them. I want them to succeed, and I think they felt very badly, and that made me feel bad. Me? I’m good.”

First reactions to Fede Álvarez's long-awaited space horror flick "Alien: Romulus" are here, and according to several critics, it's a movie that plays like a "greatest hits" take on the series that first began with Ridley Scott's 1979 classic "Alien." Whether or not that's a good thing is up for debate, but early reactions so far appear more mixed than expected — especially after 20th Century Studios dropped such a deliciously nasty trailer for the film earlier this year, setting horror fans abuzz and solidifying the movie as one of the year's most anticipated.
The hype paid off for some critics, including /Film's Bj Colangelo, who notes on X that the film is in her personal top 3 "Alien" film ranking. She calls the new movie "a return to form for the franchise in the sense that it is an unapologetic legacy sequel — but also is filled with thrilling, disgusting, and scary as hell moments.

Prolific thriller filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan returned to theaters on August 2 with his latest film “Trap,” which stars Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue as a father and daughter who attend a pop concert where there’s more going on than meets the eye. The reviews are in for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and the snarky superhero isn’t wooing critics quite as positively as “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2” did in 2016 and 2018.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and the only MCU theatrical release of 2024. The film is also the first time Deadpool will team up with Disney and Kevin Feige.
Industry inside jokes and self-deprecation run rampant in the film with some critics calling it “amusing and exhausting.” You will hopefully utter at least one chuckle throughout the 127 minute feature, though.
“When you throw 7,000 jokes at the screen hoping something will stick, a few of them certainly will,” Jordan Hoffman from Entertainment Weekly said. “I did laugh several times; I am not a monster.”
The film has a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score with 116 reviews, compared to the original film’s 85% and the sequel’s 84%.

Makoto Shinkai has been called the new Hayao Miyazaki from the moment he arrived on the scene -- and not entirely without reason. The filmmaker has made some of the most successful anime movies of all time, employing stunning visuals that bring tear-jerking stories to life. Like Miyazaki, Shinkai blends traditional Japanese folklore with modern stories to tell fantastical yet intimate coming-of-age stories.
Shinkai's latest, "Suzume," is a movie he's been slowly building his whole career up to. This serves as the end of his unofficial natural disaster trilogy that started with "Your Name," this time directly tackling the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in the plot. In "Suzume," we follow the titular character, a young woman living in a small town in Japan who is tasked with closing a series of magical turns across the country before it falls into another disaster. It's reductive to proclaim Makoto Shinkai "the new Hayao Miyazaki," but the comparison isn't entirely unwarranted. Like the Studio Ghibli maestro, the Japanese filmmaker has come to garner critical acclaim and box office success on a global scale thanks to films like "Your Name" and his latest movie, "Suzume." In a departure from Shinkai's previous work, "Suzume" even incorporates some Ghibli-esque flourishes, including a mystical talking cat and a handsome male lead who's transformed into a small three-legged stool for much of the runtime (not to mention the film's deliberate Ghibli Easter eggs). Generally speaking, however, the only thing that Shinkai and Miyazaki's animated films really have in common is how distinctly Japanese they are.
Take "Suzume," a film that's all about Japan's seismic activity and the mythology that has sprung up around it. It also deliberately invokes the destructive earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tōhoku region of Japan...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a sumptuous feast for the eyes according to film critics who just saw the film. The movie, detailing the life of the Emperor Napoleon (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and his relationship as both a ruler and a husband to Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) is “a lot of movie” according to critic and writer William Bibbiani.
The film will premiere in a truncated two hour and 38 minute cut in theaters, while debuting a four-hour cut on Apple TV+.
Many critics cited the biggest flaw was that it felt like the time had been condensed. According to IndieWire’s David Ehrlich, “Napoleon definitely feels like a 4-hour movie that’s been cut to ribbons, but it’s So funny during the first half when it’s all about Ridley Scott just reading Napoleon for filth and laughing at how embarrassing it is to be a man with ambitions.

How grisly is “Saw X”? The 10th film in the horror franchise — in which people are trapped in elaborate torture traps that often require them to lose body parts to survive — was so disturbing to neighbors of film editor Steve Forn that they called police to report “someone being tortured to death,” director Kevin Greutert said.
As Greutert, who has directed three films in the series and edited seven, told NME, Forn was editing a scene involving a gruesome “eye vacuum trap,” in which a character will lose both eyes if they don’t win the game devised by the villain, Jigsaw.
A doorbell camera captured the police knocking on the door of Forn’s North Hollywood apartment to tell him, “The neighbors [have been] calling and saying someone’s being tortured to death in here,” the director related. “And [Forn] was like, ‘Actually, I’m just working on a movie… You can...

Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. After five years lying in wait, "The Nun" franchise is emerging from the shadows this weekend to scare moviegoers once again. "The Nun II" makes its theatrical debut this week, but some critics already got the chance to see the movie that marks a ccomeback for one of the Conjuring Universe's most prominent ghouls. Valak, the sinister demon played by Bonnie Aarons in "The Nun" films and "The Conjuring 2," is set to make a harrowing return in the new movie, which picks up the story of heroic nun Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and her probably-possessed bestie Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) four years after the original film's ending. As adults, we know that not everyone can be trusted. However, little kids, like Peter in the 2023 Lionsgate horror flick "Cobweb," should be able to trust their parents. Is the knocking sound young Peter hears in his bedroom real or in his imagination, as his mom keep telling him? Or are they perhaps lying to him and hiding a dangerous and terrifying secret? There's a line in the horror film "Silent Hill" that says, "Mother is God in the eyes of a child," so who can a child trust if they can't trust their parents?

John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, but a horror movie starring Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr was released in theaters three weeks ago just as the Barbenheimer craze was getting underway. Sure, it would be easy to blame the wild success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" for burying this movie but, quite frankly, it seems like Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, must shoulder some of that blame as well. Not only did the studio do very little to build any awareness for the film but, as it arrived on VOD over the weekend, the domestic box office grosses were never reported.
For people who don't follow this stuff regularly, it is truly rare for a theatrical release of any kind from a well-known studio to not have its box office numbers reported at all. Even movies that make very little will have those numbers reflected on sites like...

The "Fast & Furious" franchise has taken quite the ride, growing from a modest "Point Break" riff to globe-trotting espionage, borderline superhero movies (with cars). Along the way, it left the laws of physics in the dust. There are currently 11 "Fast & Furious," the 10 mainline films plus the spin-off "Hobbs & Shaw" — or are there?
Director Justin Lin (who directed five of these eleven films) made himself a household name with 2002's "Better Luck Tomorrow." The film centers on four Asian-American high school students in Orange County, California: overachieving Ben (Parry Shen), his nerdy best friend Virgil (Jason Tobin), Virgil's cool cousin Han (Sung Kang), and valedictorian Daric (Roger Fan). Afflicted with ennui, the four begin committing petty crimes, which escalate to robbery and then murder — the victim is Steve (John Cho), boyfriend of Ben's crush Stephanie (Karin Anna Cheung).

The Guardians of Galaxy are back for a third and final adventure. This time, instead of saving the Universe, they’re helping one of their own: Rocket Racoon.
The “Guardians” films have always been a bit more lighthearted than other Marvel Cinematic Universe films, given Star-Lord’s boyish charm, Mantis’ child-like innocence, and Drax’s odd sense of humor. But there are some scenes that might not be suitable for young audiences.

Wes Craven's 1996 slasher film "Scream" was an effective horror movie, but gained a great deal of cultural and critical traction for its metaphysical commentary. The characters in "Scream" were old enough to have been raised on the slasher movies of the 1970s and 1980s, making them able to recognize when they were themselves enmeshed in a slasher movie-like scenario. When the killers are eventually revealed, they admit to being inspired by their favorite horror movies. "Movies don't create killers," they say, "movies make killers creative."
Although "Scream" could have easily been the final slasher movie ever made -- it effectively deconstructed the genre once and for all -- it was a massive hit, leading to no small number of imitators and a long string of sequels that have become just as weary as the Roman-numeraled '80s slashers the 1996 original was lampooning. When J.J. Abrams' feature film "Star Trek" was released in theaters in 2009, there seemed to be a clear creative mandate at work. "Star Trek" was set prior to the events of the 1966 TV series on which it was based, telling an alternate timeline version of how the well-known "Trek" characters all first met. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the rest of the crew were all depicted as younger, hotter versions of themselves, each one more youthful and impulsive than their adult counterparts from 1966.
Given the hot-headedness of the Enterprise crew and the entire 2009 film's "action-packed" vibe, the mandate mentioned above seems to have demanded the filmmakers kick everything into Overdrive. It's as if they wanted critics to respond with the phrase, "This ain't your grandpa's 'Star Trek.'"

David F. Sandberg, the director of “Shazam!” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” took to Twitter to address the sequel’s poor critics’ reviews following its opening weekend.
“On Rotten Tomatoes I just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score on the same film,” Sandberg tweeted with a shrug emoji. “I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film. Oh well.”
As of Monday, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” has a middling 52% rating among all critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Among top critics, it drops to 27%. That’s in sharp contrast to the audience rating, which is a favorable 88%.

"Creed III" is the first film in the, er, "Rocky Expanded Universe" to cast the Italian Stallion's narrative arc aside. It's a wise decision because there's nowhere else to go with Balboa. Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed can't keep fighting the spawn of Rocky's former foes; "Creed II" stretched this to the breaking point with Adonis facing the son of Ivan Drago, and Sylvester Stallone would've probably kept heading down this derivative route. Rocky Balboa had outlived his purpose in "Rocky."
Liberated from Stallone's purview, "Creed III" is a breath of fresh pugilistic air. Following in the footsteps of his on-screen mentor, Jordan has seized the directorial reins, and turned in a juicy, fistic melodrama that harkens back to the likes of Robert Wise's "Somebody Up There Likes Me." Tonally, at least. Visually, Jordan has imbued his film with a certain fury that is clearly influenced by anime.

When I was about seven or so, I attended a baton competition in Orlando, Florida that granted all of the attendees a day pass to Universal Studios. The park had recently opened the "Terminator 2: 3D: Battle Across Time" attraction, which meant the park was covered in advertisements with spine-chilling imagery of the T-1000 staring into my soul, and a handful of prominently displayed, life-size Terminators that I assume were added solely to scar me for life. We had to pass by the attraction to get to another side of the park, and I just stood frozen in my tracks. I had seen both "The Terminator" and "T2: Judgment Day" at this point, but seeing a Terminator right before my eyes immediately destroyed the safe distance provided by the movies. The damn thing looked way too real for comfort, and I totally freaked out.

As Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN" continues to slay audiences at the box office, fans of the killer doll movie have compared it to the horror genre's most notorious deadly toy (and slasher icon) Chucky, who has been tiptoe-ing into our collective nightmares since the first "Child's Play" movie in 1988. Other than Chucky's lack of song-and-dance skills, the major difference between him and the blonde artificial intelligence prototype is that she is the product of tech advancement gone awry, whereas the Good Guy doll's origins lie in supernatural soul-swapping (and perhaps more). It wasn't always that way, though. In fact, Don Mancini's initial story had no killer's soul to swap at all.
In Jake Rossen's oral history of the film for Mental Floss, both director Tom Holland ("Fright Night") and writer Mancini confirm that the original story utilized the doll not as a host for a killer's rotten soul but,...

“10 Cloverfield Lane” director Dan Trachtenberg will direct the fifth installment of the “Predator” franchise for 20th Century Studios, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Patrick Aison, whose writing credits include “Kingdom,” “Jack Ryan” and “Treadstone,” will write the script. Plot details about the extraterrestrial hunters’ fifth outing are being kept under wraps.
Trachtenberg’s upcoming installment will not tie into the last film in the franchise, 2018’s “The Predator.” That film was directed by Shane Black, who starred in the very first “Predator” movie in 1987 as one of the victims.
The 2018 film cost $80 million to make and grossed $160 million at the box office. “The Predator” starred Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Augusto Aguilera and Yvone Strahovski.

Netflix dropped their latest blockbuster original today – Project Power, a superhero action movie with some significant Marvel and DC pedigree behind it. Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) star and The Batman‘s Mattson Tomlin penned the script. With comic book films not hitting theaters this summer as they should’ve done, there was a lot of hype for this one in the build-up to its release.
Now that it’s arrived, as of this Friday morning, the internet seems to be digging it quite a bit. It’s going down a treat with most viewers who love the high-concept premise and its fresh take on a crowded genre. Not all are pleased, as others feel it doesn’t live up to its potential, but the general consensus is that it’s another winner for Netflix.

Elisabeth Moss’ new horror film, a reboot of The Invisible Man, has been met with overall praise ahead of its Friday release date.
The Invisible Man follows Moss’ character Cecilia as she escapes from an abusive relationship and then finds out that her ex has died by suicide — or has he? When Cecilia begins noticing an unsettling presence around her, it’s soon clear that he is not dead but has found a way to make himself invisible.
“This is the expertly told, horrifying story of an abusive relationship filtered through the lens of a classic horror movie monster,” William Bibbiani wrote for The Wrap.

Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep,” the film adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining,” is a “tremendous achievement” and a “worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” critics say.
“[It’s] among the best Stephen King adaptations ever,” CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg wrote,” while Daily Mirror’s Chris Hunneysett called it “thrilling and accomplished.”
‘Doctor Sleep’ is a stunning and frightening film about trauma and substance abuse, it’s a worthy successor to ‘The Shining,'” added Bloody Disgusting’s William Bibbiani. Overall, critics seem to agree that the beginning is a slow burn, but the third act makes it worthwhile.
