Less than a month after giving her uncensored opinions about Robert Redford in Cannes, Jane Fonda was at the Tribeca Festival on Saturday speaking her mind about the climate crisis, Joe Biden, and her father Henry Fonda.
The two-time Oscar winner was at the New York-based fest to receive Tribeca’s third annual Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award. The award, an original drawing entitled Exodus #3 from artist Julie Mehretu, was presented by Grammy-winning artist Alicia Keys.
Following the award presentation, Fonda sat for a Q&a with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America.
“Let’s hear it for Tribeca Film Festival,” Fonda said. “For giving chances to women and to people of color in the film industry and to young people. I’m so grateful to the Tribeca. I can’t believe that a Murdoch owns it (Tribeca Enterprises).”

Nina Simone — the legendary singer and activist whose artistry took her around the globe — grew up in a modest, three-room clapboard home in Tryon, North Carolina.
In 2017, after years of vacancy and decay, four Black artists, conceptual artist Adam Pendleton, sculptor and painter Rashid Johnson, collagist and filmmaker Ellen Gallagher, and abstract artist Julie Mehretu, joined forces to purchase Simone’s childhood home for $95,000 to save it from demolition. It has since been declared a national treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is now the focus of a benefit auction led by Pace Gallery.
The Nina Simone Childhood Home Benefit Auction will feature 11 contemporary artworks and benefit the Nina Simone Childhood Home preservation project spearheaded by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The auction will be co-curated by Pendleton and tennis champion, entrepreneur and arts patron Venus Williams.

Robert Pattinson has curated a collection fit for Bruce Wayne.
The “Batman” actor partnered with Sotheby’s on an exhibit for the Contemporary Curated program, which runs from September 23 through 29 at Sotheby’s New York. A live auction will conclude the exhibit on September 30.
Pattinson selected six pieces from artists including Willem de Kooning, Richard Serra, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. According to Artnet, estimated values for the works range from 100,000 to 2.5 million. Pattinson, who is deemed a “passionate art collector” by a Page Six source, previously auctioned one of his own sketches for charity in 2017.
“What I look for is when a piece has its own language,” Pattinson said in a press release of his curation strategy, especially applauding artist Julie Mehretu’s portrayals of “magnitude and abundance” in her “Untitled” ink drawing.
“It doesn’t necessarily feel like it just exists for its own sake and has a presence that...

Actress and director Emma Watson has been busy on social media after a months-long break and is showing her fashionable side.
Her latest project has been directing and starring in Prada’s Paradoxe campaign, where she used her platform to hire women creatives behind the scenes.
The reusable perfume bottle style also matches Emma’s commitment to promoting sustainable products, as the bottle remains useful after the perfume is gone.
Once again taking a stand, Emma attended the Kering Foundation’s Caring for Women Dinner on Thursday night in New York City.
The charitable event was hosted by Anderson Cooper and co-chaired by Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, Gisele Bundchen, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson, Julie Mehretu, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan,...

Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to Catherine Gund’s documentary “Aggie,” about her mother Agnes “Aggie” Gund, the high-profile art collector and philanthropist.
“Aggie,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, explores the issues of art, race and justice. Strand plans for a fall release starting with a launch at Film Forum in New York, followed by a nationwide opening.
The film features “Aggie” in conversation with artists, family and friends including Glenn Ligon, Darren Walker, Teresita Fernandez, Abigail Disney, Rajendra Roy, John Waters and Thelma Golden surrounded by art in her home by artists such as Jasper Johns, Louise Bourgeois, Julie Mehretu, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly and Kara Walker.
