Do you know what we don’t get enough in movies? Vehicle-based heists. I jest of course but Overhaul (originally titled Cargo Maxima in its native Brazil) feels very much like yet another entry in the Fast & Furious franchise… Well, before it dropped the “and the” from the title! Yes, this is a throwback to the more basic, less “out of this world” antics of the early Vin Diesel films, when it was all about the car racing/cop chase action rather than unbelievable superhero-esque antics of Dom and co. in the more recent franchise entries.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today unveiled the winners of the International Emmy Awards 2020.

During a virtual ceremony broadcast from New York City, Oscar-winner Glenda Jackson added another award to the mantlepiece for her BBC dementia drama Elizabeth Is Missing. She won best actress for the Stv Studios show, adding to a haul that includes a BAFTA and Broadcasting Press Guild gong.

Kudos/72 films’ BBC drama Responsible Child scooped two prizes: Best TV movie/mini-series and best actor for lead Billy Barratt. It tells the true story of a 12-year-old boy named Ray who is put on trial for murder.

Other winners included PBS and Channel 4’s Oscar-nominated Syria film For Sama; Netflix’s Brazilian comedy Ninguém tá Olhando and Indian drama Delhi Crime; and Endemol Shine Australia’s ABC show Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds.

This year’s crop of Intl. Emmy nominees across categories feature strong and diverse showings for series and performers alike. Here, Variety breaks down the races.

Drama

Few categories sum up current trends in global TV better than drama series, which also continues to be the biggest prize at the ceremony. Three of the four titles come from big, global-reaching companies, and three of are also crime thrillers, still the stock-in trade of much high-end international drama. On paper, any of the four titles could win, with interrogation room-set “Criminal: U.K.” from “Killing Eve” writer George Kay, pitting cops against suspects played in memorable turns by a stone-faced David Tennant and swanking Hayley Atwell. “The Bronze Garden 2” has Argentina’s Joaquín Furriel take on a new case to honor his dead friend Doberti (Luis Luque). Comedian and actor Ronny Chieng will host the 47th International Emmy Awards Gala in New York later this month.

Conleth Hill, known for playing Lord Varys in “Game of Thrones,” will be on hand to give the Founders Award to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of the hit HBO series, at the Nov. 25 ceremony at the New York Hilton.

Chieng, a correspondent on “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” and star of “Crazy Rich Asians,” has notched sold-out standup tours, and co-wrote and starred in his own television comedy series, “Ronny Chieng: International Student,” which aired on ABC Australia, the BBC, Comedy Central Asia and Comedy Central in the U.S. His Netflix comedy special drops in December.

Businesswoman, philanthropist, author and former model Iman will present the Directorate Award to CNN chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour. Amanpour was one of Variety’s Power of Women honorees earlier this year.

AMC and BBC co-pro McMafia is going head to head with Netflix’s Indian drama Sacred Games for an International Emmy.

The nominations for the 2019 International Emmy Awards were unveiled today by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with 44 Nominees across 11 categories and 21 countries. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on November 25 2019 at the Hilton New York Hotel.

James Norton-fronted McMafia and Sacred Games are competing with Fox’s Brazilian drama One Against All and German thriller Bad Banks in the drama category.

Brazil and the U.K. lead the pack in this year’s International Emmy Awards nominations, which span 21 countries across 11 categories.

Titles and talent from Britain and Brazil will vie with other hopefuls for the trophy in five categories: drama, best performance by an actor, best performance by an actress, arts programming and documentary. Brazilian shows also won a three further nods in the comedy, short-form series and movie/miniseries categories, while a British program scored a nomination for non-scripted entertainment.

Other countries with more than one nod include Germany, Australia, Belgium, Argentina, Hungary and India.

“The diversity, geographic spread and quality of this year’s nominees is a testament to the increasing wealth of outstanding television being created on a global scale,” Bruce L.
