Camila Cabello hasn’t had it easy with her latest album C, Xoxo. Since dropping the lead single “I Luv It” in March, she’s been criticized for “trying too hard” to go against the radio pop identity that she built with her hits “Havana” and Señorita” — two songs, by the way, that stan Twitter already hates. She was accused of copying her contemporaries, straining to be edgy, and embracing an aesthetic that seemed to contradict the picture-perfect pop star manufactured for her when she was in Fifth Harmony. But all along,...

Carla Morrison has gotten used to living the “señora lifestyle.” Since stepping away from the public eye to make 2022’s El Renacimiento, she’s created a world where she isn’t always thinking about big crowds and dropping new music. Instead, she’ll spend her days prepping recipes for the week, going grocery shopping for the ingredients, and squeezing in time at night to phone her mom and close friends.

It took Stromae nine years to return to music. The reason, he says, was simple: “I needed to get inspired by normal stuff.” After seeing international success with his 2010 club-pop single “Alors on Danse” and making history as the first French-singing performer to sell out Madison Square Garden, in 2015, the Belgian artist felt that he needed to “live a normal life.” So he took a hiatus.

Sylvain Chomet, the director of several beautiful animated films including The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist, has unveiled his music video for Belgian singer and songwriter Stromae’s “Carmen.” The video style, which is everything you would come to expect from the Academy Award nominated director, draws on the 1800s opera by French composer Georges Bizet, and features an animated Stromae being consumed by his Twitter addiction. Stringbean-skinny, androgynous, and biracial, Paul Van Haver is one of Europe's biggest music sensations. Known as Stromae, the Belgian-Rwandan artist's hip-hop-infused dance album Racine Carrée (Square Root) has sold nearly 3 million copies since it was released last year. The explosive lead single “Papaoutai," about absent fathers (Van Haver’s was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide), went to No. 1 in 16 countries and now has 188 million views on YouTube. Hardly a manufactured pop star, Stromae financed his first hit by working at a fast-food restaurant. That cathartic dance-floor banger, “Alors On Danse,” became the most-played French-language single of 2010 and was remixed to new acclaim in the English-speaking world by Kanye West. In the midst of his U.S. tour, Van Haver spoke with Vulture about the alienation of clubbing, his first impressions of the U.S., and how desperate he was for President Obama to listen to his CD.Is...
