The 77th annual Writers Guild Awards were handed out on Saturday in concurrent ceremonies at the Edison Ballroom in New York and Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
Shōgun took home the prize for Best New Series, beating out fellow first-time nominees such as English Teacher, Nobody Wants This, Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The Hulu series also won for Best Drama and Episodic Drama, while Max’s Hacks took home the trophy for Best Comedy, and HBO’s The Penguin won for Limited Series.

With last year’s ceremony taking place in the shadow of the 2023 strikes and this year’s function in the aftermath of the Southern California wildfires, the 2025 WGA Awards have a lot of work to do when it comes to lifting the spirits of the entertainment industry. “Abbott Elementary” is headed to the science fair.
In an exclusive video of Wednesday’s episode shared with TheWrap, Quinta Brunson’s Janine and Lisa Ann Walter’s Melissa guide their classes through the first steps of the science fair, beginning with selecting an idea.
“I’m gonna make a volcano,” one of Janine’s students tells her, to which Janine responds, “that sounds like a blast,” which gets a less than-enthusiastic response from her student.
Other ideas include finding which potato makes the brightest light, a water filtration project and a social experiment — which the student warns could be compromised if she says anything more “at this juncture.”
“As long as you don’t besmirch my name, go off,” Melissa replied to the social experiment.

The original screenplay nominees are A Real Pain, Anora, Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass. The adapted screenplay nominees are A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys and Wicked.
Top awards contenders The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Sing Sing and The Substance were not eligible for the WGA Awards’ adapted or original screenplay nominations.

Fox has picked up five guy-centric comedies, including the much-anticipated Andy Samberg-Andre Braugher detective vehicle “Brooklyn Nine Nine.”
The series orders include Seth MacFarlane’s live-action entry “Dads,” which already had a six-episode commitment that has now been bumped up to 13 segs. The 20th Century Fox TV series revolves around two best friends, played by Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, whose lives change when their fathers move in with them.
