The streaming service announced that its original movie Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere on Friday, January 24, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. New teaser art for the highly anticipated movie was also revealed.

The announcement was made Saturday during the Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic Con. Yeoh made a video appearance during the panel, which featured cast members Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl and Robert Kazinsky, along with executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi.

Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere exclusively Friday, January 24 in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available.

In the movie, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

In addition to Yeoh, Hardwick, Rohl and Kazinsky, cast includes Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao. Miku Martineau portrays a young Philippa Georgiou.

According to a new article in Variety, the upcoming "Star Trek" TV movie "Section 31" includes a younger version of Rachel Garrett, a character last seen on the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise." Garrett will be played by actress Kacey Rohl. After some extremely nerdy number crunching, one will conclude that "Section 31" takes place in the 2320s, which is a weird timeframe. The lead character of "Section 31" is Empress Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, and the last time we saw her, she had been whisked away from the year 2258 — her "homebase," as it were — and deposited in the year 3188. After encountering a sentient time portal, Georgiou was next delivered to an unspecified point in history "when the Mirror Universe and the Prime Universe were still aligned." Given what we know about "Star Trek," that could be as long ago as Ad 1799.

It’s a surprising but exciting turn of events, to be sure, since Garrett has only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek, leaving much of her history yet to be explored. In fact, digging into more of Garrett’s story would be a way to unlock a piece of Star Trek captain lore that’s long been missing despite the Enterprise-c’s introduction over 30 years ago.

While the big screen Star Trek franchise remains parked in development dry dock (with at least two takes on the venerable space adventures still actively jostling for attention), the TV incarnations are keeping the Federation flag flying. And as the first film spin-off, Star Trek: Section 31 starts shooting with Michelle Yeoh (full name: Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh) in the lead, the cast list is swelling. Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao have all boarded the streaming title.

As previously announced, Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou in the film, having originated the character in the first season of “Star Trek: Discovery.” Georgiou, after crossing over from the Mirror Universe, now works as an agent for the mysterious Federation spy group known as Section 31. The reboot, which was headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, had a high bar to hit with big expectations. The original series’ Corbin Bernsen also reprised his role as Arnie Becker in the pilot alongside Hari Nef, Toks Olagundoye, Ian Duff, John Harlan Kim and Juliana Harkavey, and Kacey Rohl.

The pilot was written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and directed by Anthony Hemingway.

It followed the law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — as it reinvented itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

ABC has passed on the sequel series, which would have seen the return of Blair Underwood (above) as attorney Jonathan Rollins and Corbin Bernsen lawyer Arnie Becker. ABC’s L.A. Law sequel has gone the way of the network’s NYPD Blue sequel. The network has passed on the pilot, headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins in addition to executive producing.

Like was the case with the revival of Steven Bochco’s iconic NYPD Blue, the followup to Bochco’s acclaimed legal drama L.A. Law had a very high bar to clear in order to get to the air. As Deadline reported in our Pilot Buzz stories, the L.A. Law pilot got so-so reception at ABC and was never considered a strong contender for a series pickup.

I hear, likely because of the very high expectations, the pilot felt a bit like it tried too hard but those who have seen it praised Underwood’s performance. There are no plans for the project to be reworked.
