Jackie Chan once attempted to break out of his signature comedy style in the early part of the millennium when he made New Police Story, which had him playing a more dramatic role as an alcoholic ex-cop. He would follow it up with 2005’s The Myth, which would be half of an Armor of God-type movie where he played an archeologist and half of a period film where Chan also played a General of a historical Chinese army. Chan returns with a new sequel to The Myth, titled A Legend. This film reunites him with director Stanley Tong, who directed Chan in movies like Rumble in the Bronx and Police Story 3: Supercop.
Well Go USA has just released the trailer for A Legend. Not long after the company unveiled the trailers for the upcoming action films of other martial arts icons, Tony Jaa’s Striking Rescue and Donnie Yen’s The Prosecutor.

A scene from the Chinese action flick Wolf Pack. Courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment
Wolf Pack is a fast-paced, subtitled action flick from China that’s well worth having to read the dialog – partly because there isn’t too much of it in proportion to the shooting and fighting time. An elite mercenary unit of ex-soldiers opens with rescuing a young humanitarian doctor (Aarif Rahman) kidnapped by terrorists. The main plot involves the bad guys’ effort to destroy an oil pipeline that’s vital to China’s needs, both foreign and domestic.
The leader (Jin Zhang) is a hard-nosed veteran of many battles. Luxia Jiang co-stars as the attractive female member of the team that’s become almost mandatory in recent action flicks from all countries who crank them out. Diego Dati plays the typically brilliant, ruthless head honcho of the terrorists. All three mentioned in this paragraph fill their roles in excellent style.

Modern Chinese action cinema seems to be slowly adding a political worldview alongside the usual patriotism that can often be found on display. Like the Reagan era Gung Ho Americana, it can often be a bit much for audiences outside the local market. With “Wolf Pack” we once again see involvement in international affair, through a team of mercenaries that potentially are on the wrong side of the law, the set up promises something a bit different. The question is, does it deliver?

"A team of specialized warriors." Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Chinese action film titled Wolf Pack, which is getting a US release in theaters at the end of this month. It opened a few weeks ago in China and hasn't played at any film festivals. This seems to be yet another jingoistic, nationalistic Chinese propaganda movie similar to US action movies about how great US mercenaries are at stopping bad guys from doing anything bad on American soil. During one a mission of the elite military Wolf Pack squad, who are engaged in overseas security work, they discover that foreign terrorist forces have extended their reach into China's energy lifeline. The action film stars Max Zhang, Aarif Lee, Jiang Luxia, Gianluca Zoppa, Ye Liu, and Mark Luu. Looks like another generic action film without anything original about it. ›››

Two new Jackie Chan movies in one month! Yes indeed (Railroad Tigers is the other). Well Go has debuted an official trailer for the action comedy Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan, directed by Stanley Tong. When I was younger, one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies was Rumble in the Bronx, an R-rated action comedy set in Brooklyn and it was awesome. Kung Fu Yoga reunites Chan with Supercop and Rumble in the Bronx director Stanley Tong for the first time in years. And as much as I would hope that was a good thing, this looks terrible. The cast includes Amyra Dastur, Aarif Rahman, Sonu Sood, Disha Patani, Lay Zhang, Eric Tsang. It's an India-China co-production and looks like a CGI-fest. But, the trailer is still fun. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Stanley Tong's Kung Fu Yoga, direct from Well Go's YouTube: Jack (Jackie Chan), a world-renowned archaeology professor,...

Although nobody wants to discuss it openly, one issue that overshadowed this year’s Asian Film Market was the growing political tension between China and South Korea, which has been affecting the entertainment industry since August.
The problem stems to the Us and South Korea’s decision to deploy the Us’ Thaad missile defense system on the Korean Peninsula as protection against North Korea’s nuclear threats. China has openly objected to the decision and appears to be retaliating by restricting South Korean cultural products.
The Chinese government has not made any official statements, but Korean actors, singers and filmmakers are finding it difficult obtain visas to work in mainland China, and China-Korea co-productions, in development or pre-production, appear to have stalled. The Chinese government has not made any official statements, but Korean actors, singers and filmmakers are finding it difficult obtain visas to work in mainland China, and China-Korea co-productions, in development or pre-production, appear to have stalled. According to Chinese buyers, Korean films and TV shows are no longer being approved...

The martial arts star is to get another biopic, kicking off with the story of a real-life fight in the mid-1960s
Bruce Lee is to return to the big screen in an "origins story" which will use a legendary incident in the martial arts icon's life to spin off into action movie territory, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Birth of the Dragon does not appear to be a traditional biopic, but it does begin with a fight which really took place between Lee and the famed Chinese kung fu master Wong Jack Man in San Francisco in 1964, when the city's Chinatown was ruled by triad gangs from Hong Kong. Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen J Rivele's screenplay then transfers into strict fantasy territory as the former combatants team up to battle Chinatown gangsters.

The biggest, most hyped and eagerly awaited Hong Kong thriller of the year arrives in the form of “Cold War”, written and directed by first-timers Longman Leung and Sunny Luk. Backed by a massive marketing campaign clearly trying to position it as the new “Infernal Affairs”, the police corruption film is certainly an ambitious affair, with an amazing cast of top stars headlined by Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka Fai, supported by the likes of Eddie Peng (“Tai Chi”), Aarif Lee (“Bruce Lee, My Brother”), Gordon Lam (“Motorway”) and Charlie Young (“Floating City”), with Michael Wong and the immortal Andy Lau on hand for cameo appearances. The effort seems to have paid off, with the film emerging as the biggest Hong Kong money maker of 2012, in addition to having been nominated for a long list of gongs at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The film kicks off with the...

Hong Kong film maker Barbara Wong, known for romantic comedies that tackle modern issues, such as the recent “The Perfect Marriage” and “The Break Up Club”, returns with something a little more bitter than sweet in “The Allure of Tears”. As its title suggests, the film is a tearjerker of the highest order, featuring 3 vaguely connected stories of love and loss, with the emphasis firmly on the latter. Seeing Wong working again with regular writer-producer Lawrence Cheng, the film features a fine cast made up of newcomers and industry veterans, including Richie Jen (“Punished”), Gigi Leung (“Marrying Mr Perfect”), Aarif Lee (“Bruce Lee, My Brother”) and popular television starlet Joe Chen (“You’re My Destiny”), plus Shawn Dou and Zhou Dongyu, stars of Zhang Yimou’s “Under the Hawthorn Tree”. The first of the film’s segments focuses on Zhou Dongyu as Xili Mei, a young woman suffering from leukaemia,...

I couldn’t believe my eyes when i first seen that Donnie Yen will be returning to the Ip Man series, this time the movie will be shot in 3D. To see this on the big screen in 3D would be amazing, so i’m hoping this will get a world wide release (One can dream i guess).

Director: Raymond Yip and Manfred Wong. Review: Adam Wing. Young Bruce Lee takes us back to the early days of a martial arts legend, seen through the eyes of his younger brother Robert. Robert Lee participated in the production of the film, which focuses primarily not on the fighting, but on the Lee family growing up. Produced by Manfred Wong (The Storm Riders) who also co-directed with Raymond Yip, Young Bruce Lee casts Aarif Lee as the legend-to-be. Aarif is no stranger to success either, having taken home the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer for his scene-stealing debut in the period drama Echoes of the Rainbow. He is joined by the likes of Tony Leung, Christy Chung, and Jennifer Tse (Nicholas Tse's sister) appearing in her big screen debut. Produced to coincide with the 70th anniversary of his birth, “Bruce Lee, My Brother” is a part-fictionalised biopic of the legendary star, based upon the memoirs of his younger brother Robert Lee, who was himself involved with the writing of the script. The film was directed by Manfred Wong (“The Storm Riders”) and Raymond Yip (“Anna in Kung Fu Land”), and endeavours to tell the story of Lee’s generally less well known early years. Charged with doing justice to the weighty role of one of the most popular and internationally recognisable stars of all time is Aarif Lee, who recently impressed with his award winning turn in “Echoes of the Rainbow”, with a supporting cast that includes Tony Leung Ka Fai, Christy Chung, and Jennifer Tse. Beginning from the very beginning with his birth in San Francisco in 1940, the film follows Bruce Lee, or Phoenix (Aarif Lee) as he was then nicknamed,...

Chinese director Raymond Yip's Bruce Lee, My Brother (2010) is not the high kicking martial arts amalgamation one might expect from the title, but instead takes a sentimental journey from the renowned actor's childhood through to his late teen years, and is adapted from a book written by his younger brother, Robert Lee. Told with intimate detail only a family member could recount, we are shown the untold story of Asia’s most cherished martial artist.
Born to a wealthy mother Grace Ho (Christy Chung), and fathered by the famous Chinese opera performer Lee Hoi Cheun (Tony Leung Ka-fai), Bruce Lee - played here by Aarif Lee - grew up under the name "Phoenix", after his grandmother decided upon a name which would rise out of the fire of war-ravaged Hong Kong.

It was initially reported last year that Dante Lam (Fire of Conscience) would be directing what would possibly be the Peter Chan’s produced remake of Shaw Brothers’s 1975 film The Flying Guillotine, but now Taiwanese director Su Chao-Bin, who previously directed this year’s Reign of Assassins (which preemed at the Venice), will direct the remake.
