The Young Turks (Tyt) is unveiling tonight the latest original set to air on its just-launched Twitch channel.
The progressive digital news network is premiering Common Room -- a non-political interview series that will live exclusively on Twitch. Common Room will feature Tyt hosts and friends having a conversation over drinks in what Tyt is billing as a digital campfire of sorts. Each episode will break down the week’s top news stories in realms like movies, music, gaming, and relationships.
Rotating hosts will include Tyt staples like Ana Kasparian, Jayar Jackson, John Iadarola, Brett Erlich, and Rick Strom. New episodes will arrive on Twitch on Mondays at 10 pm Et. Eventually, Tyt plans to offer 12 hours of exclusive content on Twitch every month. Common Room joins another Twitch-exclusive, Between Me And Uygur, in which Tyt co-founder Cenk Uygur and a guest will discuss life in quarantine.

Progressive news network The Young Turks (Tyt) is launching a Twitch channel.
The network, founded by host Cenk Uygur, already boasts a massive presence on YouTube (4.7 million subscribers) and Facebook (3.2 million followers) is foraying onto Twitch -- just as livestreaming is at an all-time high amid quarantine. The move means that Tyt’s eponymous news broadcast with Uygur and Ana Kasparian will be accessible to Twitch viewers, as will John Iadarola’s The Damage Report, and 12 hours of exclusive content each week. Additional shows will be unveiled in coming weeks.
“Tyt is a giant within independent media, and we pride ourselves as a digital campfire because of our lean-in audience,” Uygur said in a statement. “The launch on Twitch is an exciting opportunity to reach an interactive community of 17.5 million average daily visitors."

Gillette’s New Ad Addressing Toxic Masculinity Met With 400,000 Dislikes, Vitriol From YouTube Users
Shaving company Gillette’s striking new campaign about ending toxic masculinity debuted yesterday on YouTube, and in less than 24 hours, it has garnered more than 5 million views — as well as hundreds of thousands of downvotes and a tidal wave of negative comments from YouTube users.
A voiceover in the ad (below) invokes Gillette’s company slogan, asking, “Is this the best a man can get? Is it?” as the trailer rolls clips showing young boys bullying each other, as well as men exhibiting a host of common toxic behaviors. There are also clips condemning the common “boys will be boys” excuse for those toxic behaviors, and clips highlighting the anti-sexual harassment #MeToo movement. And Gillette also appears to call itself out for old ads with women whose only purpose in them was to drop a kiss on the freshly-shaven cheek of their male stars.

As part of the launch, progressive digital news network Tyt will debut four new shows -- its largest concurrent programming addition to date. The lineup includes: John Iadarola’s daily morning series The Damage Report; an analysis and commentary series hosted by Ana Kasparian called #NoFilter; Happy Half Hour, which is focused on positive news stories; and Old School Sports, which will revisit classic games and rivalries.

On November 8th, the United States turned its eyes to the results of the 2016 presidential election, and one place where its citizens tuned in for their political coverage was The Young Turks. The progressive-leaning news channel had a big night; across three separate live streams -- one each on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter -- it drew more than 4.5 million total hits, smashing its own viewership record.
The bulk of The Young Turks’ viewership came on YouTube, where its hosts, including Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, led a 12-hour broadcast that broke down the election results. At its peak viewership, The Young Turks’ YouTube stream counted 132,979 concurrent viewers. While that is a smaller figure compared to what YouTube drew during the three presidential debates, it is the biggest audience ever for a Young Turks stream, eclipsing the 72,635 viewers the news channel drew for its March 2016 interview with progressive presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

No one could have predicted that the big story coming out of the first day of the Republican National Convention would revolve around speech plagiarism.
Earlier on Monday, the top news coming out of Cleveland was the group of anti-Donald Trump delegates attempting to force a roll call vote. When that was denied, the Colorado delegation left the arena floor.

But then came Melania Trump’s primetime speech. Blatantly obvious similarities between her speech and one Michelle Obama gave at the 2008 Democratic convention quickly became the top story coming out of the Rnc as Monday turned into Tuesday. (Yes, that means Scott Baio’s and Antonio Sabato Jr.’s quick speeches became quick afterthoughts.)

As the year’s election coverage continues to accelerate, The Young Turks has served as one of the Internet’s preeminent progressive voices. Now, the news network will bring its message back to TV as well. Tyt has joined forces with Fusion for a weekly show that will launch on September 5th ahead of this November’s presidential vote.
Tyt’s new TV show, which is currently titled, will be co-hosted by Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola. In each hour-long episode, Kasparian and Iadarola will engage with college students about the issues they find most relevant. Along the way, the two hosts will receive help from their colleagues, including Tyt founder Cenk Ugyur, who hosts the network’s main digital program alongside Kasparian, and Hannah Cranston, who hosts Tyt’s ThinkTank channel with Iadarola.
While Tyt’s digital programming has emerged as its centerpiece, the network has a long history with TV.

Our YouTube Millionaires column tracks channels that have surpassed YouTube's most significant milestone, but by the time some channels reach the million-subscriber plateau, they have changed dramatically from their initial concept. A great example is ThinkTank, which began in 2011 as Tyt University, a college-themed spin-off of The Young Turks (Tyt). In 2015, co-hosts John Iadarola and Hannah Cranston led a re-brand of the channel, molding it into a more general hub called ThinkTank. The pivot was a success, and now that ThinkTank is over one million subscribers, we sat down with Iadarola to talk about the process through which Tyt University morphed into something bigger.

Each year, Forbes compiles a list of young difference-makes for its ‘30 Under 30’ list. The online video community, given the youthful nature of its demographic makeup, is generally well-represented on Forbes’ list, and that was once again the case in 2016. The YouTube and Vine stars whose names turned among the most influential people under 30 years of age include Lilly Singh and Shawn Mendes.
Forbes chose Singh as one the honorees in its Hollywood & Entertainment category, where she stands next to big traditional media names like Brie Larson and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. Singh, the 27-year-old host of the IISuperwomanII YouTube channel, has tremendous appeal, particularly among Indian and South Asian audiences. She has used her sway to champion noble causes, such as her recent #GirlLove campaign. Also appearing on Forbes list of young Hollywood hotshots is Natalie Novak, who has worked with YouTube and Vine stars as an agent for UTA.

Content market launched inaugural Digital Fronts event showcasing online content.
Singer Chester See, child-friendly gamer Stampylonghead, alternative newsreader Ana Kasparian and comedy duo Rhett Mclaughlin and Link Neal of Rhett & Link fame were among the YouTube stars hitting the Palais des Festivals in Cannes this week for Miptv’s inaugural Digital Fronts event showcasing popular online content.
To many people over 40 sitting in the Palais’ Grand Auditorium these names meant nothing, even though between them they have generated more than one billion Internet views.
René Rechtman, president of international at La-based online content hub Maker Studios, one of the companies fronting the event, said there had been “a fundamental shift” in the way so-called “millennials” – people born from the late 1980s to early 2000s – consumed, interacted, and created content.

But in addition to the news, The Young Turks Network will also put together a 30-minute weekly version of its pop culture talk show PopTrigger. The Young Turks needed a new studio, so 3,672 of the online (and sometimes cable television) newscast’s supporters contributed a cumulative $404,101 to help them build one. The popular internet news network headlined by Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian and in possession of over 1.3 million YouTube subscribers and 1.2 billion YouTube views took to Indiegogo in early October 2013 to start soliciting contributions for new digs. Uygur, Kasparian, and company called a studio space at Current TV home for the better part of the last two years, but when Al Jazeera purchased Al Gore’s greatest investment ever, it was soon made clear The Young Turks and its outspoken voice wasn’t going to mesh well with the new network’s more straight-down-the-middle news coverage. So, the team needed a new place to shoot. The Young Turks originally set out to raise $250,000, but blew by that goal with about a week to spare.

Ana Kasparian, co-host of The Young Turks, apparently suffers from an all-too-common malady: Fox News Legs Syndrome. During a segment on Friday's web-0nly portion of the Current TV hit featuring Bob Beckel playing pot/kettle with Joy Behar's looks, Kasparian confessed that The Five co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle's legs were "distracting" to her, a condition which host Cenk Uygur noted is common among Fox News viewers.

On Monday I wrote a post which took a swipe at Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian of the daily internet newscast The Young Turks for a recent segment they did on the use of the term "homosexual" (as opposed to "gay," "Glbt," etc.)
That particular post generated a lot of discussion on our site. Some people agreed with my take that Cenk was being far too dismissive of people's reasonable concerns about the use of "homosexual."
But other AfterElton.com readers felt very strongly that I was out of line. Many couldn't see any particularly negative connotation to "homosexual." Or, if there was a negative connotation, then we should be trying to reclaim that term from social conservatives who have misappropriated it to malign us, rather than simply ceding it to them.
